After a couple of tries, I gave up trying to upgrade the VB6 codebase of RoboChef to .NET and started over fresh. Now that Visual Studio 2K5 is in final status, and Decal has had a few alphas to get past the point of breaking everything with each release, I think its time to get this plugin moving, so this weekend I started a fresh C# .NET plugin.

The plugin base is working, the interface has been ported over(with a couple minor issues to fix up still), and its showing up in game with zero FPS loss. The buttons and controls don't do any more than post test messages to the UI(and it does load the 'base' skills/groups), but all the tabs, controls, and everything from the older version are all intact.

Now I've got to make those buttons 'do stuff', but at least I have a solid foundation to construct it on. Its a different world with the new decal, which if anything is even less userfriendly than before(but structured a lot better internally), but I don't see anything stopping me from making progress and the people on #acdev are pretty helpful when I can't see straight. I should be making steady progress from here on out. Maybe I'll have something 'wrapped up' by the 25th wink

How is it LESS user-friendly?

Are you using the Interops or the Decal.Adapter?

The Decal Adapter provides nice functions and properties to allow you to easily access most of the major components in Decal through .NET natively. There is no more messy COM to deal with. It's all just there and works.

While it is not complete yet, it is well on its way.

I'd be interested to hear what you're having issues with and why. In my opinion, I hated developing plugins on the old Decal system with COM, but this new Decal Adapter stuff seems much easier and much better for .NET developers.

Have you checked again in Alpha5?

I believe a lot of that was changed to work properly in Alpha5.. I believe Arkayas went through both WF and CS and fixed some stuff to be better... then again, that might not be for the .NET stuff... d0x and Mekle may not have gotten to the Filters yet.

If it uses the same xml format as does MakeIt, then you should be able to apply your own recepies....

I can do it, and if you knew me, you would understand what an Astonishing statement that is....

I know nothing at all about programing so if I can do it just about anyone can...

Robo Chef was supposedly able to do the potions before all this Alpha stuff, and as far as the Beers, LOL that is just like I said, if not there, put it there

Well, to answer the various points raised:

Drak, I think that just having to relearn literally everything is half of the 'unfriendliness'. Of the remaining half, a large portion is due to no ImpFilter. Of the remaining percentage, its just minor annoyances like not having Intellisense to helpfully pop up object properties. I have to go browsing the keys to find the ones I want, and checking properties for existance before I use them. Is it a huge deal? no. but I'll tell you this much, the adapter not even being available unless you have the exact same IDE version seemed like a huge step backwards in interoperability. I know its not Decal's fault, but still. Other minor issues are the lack of both tools and other developers to assist. Again, not Decal's fault, but it does make information harder to come by. There just aren't that many people hanging out in #acdev these days.(those that are there have been great, as I said above) Other annoyances seem basic, yet no one knows whats up with them. Take for example, edit controls. They have no background and when I try to set one using portalimgsrc, decal itself bombs as soon as the game is entered. Without a background, edit controls are essentially invisible. I still can't get them to display a background. I also use List controls, and those are displaying a nice default background, so I went searching for info on the forums, and only saw recent posts where List controls were deemed 'Bad' and to be avoided(by Gouru I think, so I'm not sure if that's serious or not. They seem to work.). Well...what else am I supposed to use for a list? Its these kinds of things that make developing in Decal 3 feel a lot shakier and less friendly that the days of old, when we had a solid knowledge base, base controls we can trust, and as messy as it was, there was probably a call or event for just about anything and all you had to do was type '.' to see them.

Please don't take this as trying to knock Decal 3. Its a much-cleaned up design and I of all people(being a developer myself) appreciate its potential. It just doesn't have the maturity, stability, functionality, or ease of use of the old decal..yet. Its getting there.


Haz, I have zero FPS loss. Literally. Zero. Explanation? Fine. I have an X800XT PE vid card on an A64 3400 w/1G 2-2-2-5 RAM. In 1680x1050, max detail, standing in the mansion basement, I get 60FPS no matter which direction I'm facing, which is the sync rate I set it to. wink If I take sync off, I get from 150FPS-350FPS in the same spot. Decal or no decal, plugin showing or not, running in a window or not, I get the same numbers.


Back to Drak, I created the plugin using the C# template I found on the decal site, which uses interop. If you have a C# framework for Adapter, post it. In either case, as of a day ago, no one had pushed alpha 5 out to the public. Has that changed?

As for recipes, Robochef has always been as complete as I could possibly make it and this trend will continue. The recipes will be in XML format, just as they are now, but that is no indication they will be interchangable. What I *am* changing is I will try to auto-update the XML from ingame rather than make people go to a site and download the updates. Coverage will be complete.

I think that covers everything.

You're running into a bottleneck on a piece of hardware, then. Probably CPU.

All Decal Views are drawn using manual color keyed blits.

Yew, if you are using my template, a much better one will be released once the next alpha is released. A much more 'properly' coded template, which also fixes some issues with releasing resources and some other things.

Most likely the one you were using is either gone or changed numbers.

I just picked a new one, and it fixed the problem you are having.

Get off of Alpha 3. Don't waste time with WF in Alpha 3 becuase it changes compeltely with Alpha 4 and fixes many issues.

Alpha 5 should be along sometime soon. Hang in there plain

Also, I found OLEVIEW very helpful in looking at what keys the new improved World Filter offers. Its a free tool. Google it hugs

As far as list controls go, the only real problem that i am aware of is when you try to .clear them.

I will not restrict usage of RoboChef in any way, for anyone. I am trying to make it as friendly with other plugins as possible. Overly so, you might say. In fact, it should cuddle up nicely with, oh, say, a trade bot plugin or somesuch...but thats too much detail to go into at the moment. happy


The web site will change and be updated as I get closer to release.


Keep in mind, the plugin is being redesigned and reimplemented, not converted. I could call it something else entirely, but I want to keep the name as well as the look(with a few minor changes). There are things I wanted to be able to do that I could not with the old architcture. The downside is that I have to go back and update every single stupid recipe component and subcomponent. That alone is a bunch of work. When its all done though, it'll be everything it used to be, only more so and with a couple features that have been on my wishlist.

1) when you select an item to craft, and a quantity, RoboChef will check your inventory, and that of your chest (if open), and give you a Shopping List of items that you need to buy in order to make the items. For example, I'll set my bot to make 500 Trade Health Elixirs overnight, and I'd like to have a quick and easy way to figure out what components I'll need to make those.

2) I've put this out before, but give us options for when the characters' buffs run out:

a) Continue crafting.
b) Stop crafting.
c) Buff self - and have options to S2M, drink stam items, drink mana items etc.
d) Request buffs from nearby buff bot

3) Allow option for bot to log out when finished crafting. (including the effect of 2b above)

4) And PLEASE allow RoboChef to continue to use the storage chest - the best single feature of this plugin. Another nice feature would be to have your character actually open the chest if not already open.

5) Use XML files for craft items, buffs. etc so we can user-config to our heart's content.

1) This has been asked for before. One of the difficulties in doing this is that there are cases where there is more than one way to make an item. When this is the case, how do I decide which one to use to generate the list? I'm still up in the air about this one, but its been nagging at me for a long time, so it'll likely get in somehow.

2) Robochef did not buff. Robochef.NET will not buff. Robochef already asked for buffs and it still will. There are other plugins which can keep track of and refresh buffs. If for some reason you actually need to have buffs, you can use one of these two methods to keep yourself buffed. Robochef already will refresh its stats using anything you allow it to use to do so(but not life magic, other plugins can do that though) and I will keep those options from 1.8.

3) Robochef has had that option for a long time, although it was broken for a while.

4) Yeah, as much of a headache as it is to code this, its already in the design.

5) Robochef has always used XML for its formula and its configuration and it always will.


Now, back to coding. Sundays are the only day I have to work on this.

So whats new this week Yew. I'd like to say thankyou for your work on this plug in as it is one of the best out there. I know today is the only day you have to work on it. So I thought I would ask to see if you might have some sort of eta of a release date.

I've found it very time comsuming to make these things with out a plug in. yet tis a good thing as I've been learning the short cuts in making what I need.

Well MakeIt is ok, but it has several problems. I only juse MakeIt for my arrowheads and that is all. Luckily I made enough of everything before ToD came out.

When I need something besides arrow heads, I manually do them. I can hardly wait for RoboChef to be re-realeased happy .

I make Trade Health Elixers all the time as do others. My only purpose here was people have a tendency to claim 'problems' with Make It! that don't exist. If there really is an issue, if I can get more details (on a new thread) I'm happy to look into it and help resolve it if I can.

Last I heard via PM from Yew, is that the GUI is finished, and he is working on the main "workings" of it. He is fairly short of "free time", so it isn't happening as fast as we would all wish it would be.

If, when finished, it is even as good as it was before ToD, then it will be AWESOME.

"Bottom Line".... Hope as You do, that it will be soon. I won't press him though, because if hurried, then it will have more BUGz that need be. I am willing to wait for it(although with lessening patience), because I believe the wait will be MORE than worth it. happy

What drives a person to squeeze themselves through the knothole that is writing a plugin, is gone when they aren't into the game in question.

I was in D&DO beta....

I havent and wont ever buy it.... it simply is not the type of game I want to play. It's not a bad game, and it has some REAL cool features, but I dont care for the style and so I wont be playing, but I spent 2 months in the beta helping test it happy (and yes, I submitted multiple reports wink )

So, just because he was in beta does not mean a thing about whether he will be playing it in retail grin

That's about as accurate as you can get. I'd love to be able to sit down and do some 'in the zone' coding to get this knocked out, but the wife is out of town, and 2 of the kids are home sick. Add that onto my normal schedule and I don't even get to log onto AC for long enough to do my augmentation quest. That means progress is literally a few lines here and there, one small feature here, then another piece a few days later, etc. I'm pretty frustrated that I can't just "Get it done" and put it out there. If RL would just piss off for a while, we'd all be a lot happier. wink


As for DDO, I was a tester from early Aug05 until Feb06. I promised I would test and report bugs and I upheld that commitment, reporting over a hundred 'accepted'(i.e. not a duplicate, and confirmed to be a bug) bugs. I no longer play because the beta is over and since my overall opinion is that DDO's gameplay is the stankiest insult to D&D ever created, I won't be playing retail at all, ever.

Thank you very much Yew for the update. I got excited to see the thread was on the first page and didn't have to search for it. I know how RL can be. As I'm just now starting to play after a year of illness. I have pretty much figured out how to make what needs to be made. I can wait. No need to rush though as you should have it do everything you want too. Besides code isn't that easy to work with these days.

I was just wondering what was happening with it. As I have carpul tunnel in both wrist which makes the clicking of mouse and even hiting keys difficult for me to do a lot of things in game. If not for Robchef and Tank I wouldn't even be able to play for a few hours.

I have one thing to say. Most of us put real life first. If you can't understand that then you should not post. Not sure what Yew does for work in Rl but marriage and a family ALWAYS comes first
so stop bugging him... He'll get to when he can....

Sorry Yew I just can't stand whiners..... or a bunch of complaints
is becoming rather potective to those of you out there that try and
make our game play earier....

here's a plugin development tip:

If a plugin didn't get pumped out within a couple months of ToD it ain't gonna happen.

it takes a near-fanatical obsession to write something like this, and it's either there or it's not. you can't write a plugin by working on it a little here, a little there lol. you have to be hooked by it and ignore your job, wife, and kids, stop sleeping and eating right and cover your desk and office with dry pop cans and empty candy wrappers, notes, post-its and just lock yourself in a room for three months.

That's how plugins are written, and that's why people who don't have that obsession with the game anymore won't write or update plugins for it.

Yen is off playing DDO (God bless him, somebody has to sacrifice so we can still play AC). You won't see RoboChef 2, get over it.

Actually, I'm *trying* to get a basic version into some beta testers hands by the end of April.

I've only been actively working on it since about two weeks after Decal Alpha 6, which I consider stable enough for 'n00b' developers like me to work on.

This hasn't very fast development, I know, and for that I'm sorry. I have made progress, little by little. Slowly, I have been wiring up events and controls to internal classes and variables. I modified the settings-saving routine to store settings on a per-character-per-server basis, so no more 'one profile only' thing. I found a way to read in and use the old recipe file with the new structures and I worked out a clever routine for handling the "fill the recipe listbox based on the selection of skill and group comboxes' thing. Its all boring internal details, but since I'm new to c#(but not programming) I have to spend a lot of time with F1 and the object inspector wink

Other things that have been done over time:

The UI is complete.
The command processor is hooked up. /RC*insertcommandhere* is parsed correctly.
I have a main event loop running now.
Autotell is back up and working.
I hooked NetEcho and put in the switches for handling what messages I need.
The anti-spam system is working, but I need to load the settings.(In the past, this was hard coded. Now its configurable)
I have the beginnings of a 'click-here to get the latest recipes file'.
I registered robochef.yewsplugins.com and loottracker.yewsplugins.com and put up the old pages:

DONT DOWNLOAD THEM. They wont work, they may blow up your computer and drain your bank account or they might try to start your microwave oven. Its just to prove that I have a home for them and offer some tangible evidence outside of my computer that they are actually being worked on. I may even put up progress reports or some such there. My hosting software should arrive soon and I'll whip up a new web page or something, maybe with some new screenshots.


What won't it do? It won't make anything yet. Thats the last thing to go in. Everything else HAS to be in place before then. What I want to make sure of, every step of the way, is that RoboChef does "nothing" properly. It should NOT interfere with other plugins, or with normal play. Old Robo was pretty much a 'hit go and go to bed' cause you couldnt touch anything. You should be able to play normally with this version running.

You can pretty much be assured that the first 'release' will not support things like using storage, and probably won't auto-make-things-to-restore-stats-that-it-needs, etc. but it will eventually do all that and more. The architecture is a lot more flexible and configurable now, which is the benefit of completely rethinking and re-designing. The downside is, of course, time. My 'hour or two here and there' hasnt been spectacular, but it hasnt been fruitless either.

Oh, and if Beta slips to May, blame Kindom Hearts II, not DDO. =P
