The format of the two dat files has been changed by Turbine. There is no possibility of getting a new map for AC Explorer unless Zugg or someone updates the map generation tool.

There weren't any extreme changes to the cell.dat though, if you happen to have some knowledge about programming you may be able to extract the map yourself. Otherwise, the current development version of Dereth Explorer has the option to extract the map from cell.dat. It'll have some additional options, though I still need to code them happy

I believe http://mod.beteck.com/stuff/dereth.zip
is the map Ganzor created from the last cell.dat released with the February update. Thank goodness this cell.dat included the Halaetan Islands.

To the best of my knowledge there is no tool available to generate an ACExplorer compatible map from the July, August or September Client_cell_1.dat

I'm not sure why everyone is saying that AC Explorer is dead. I just replaced the map with the one linked to above, hit the updates, and now mine looks like this:

Complete with text info in the top left corner.

It considered dead because there are no support for the program. There is no way to generate a new map. So you are stuck with the world as it existed in February 2005. The only reason it works so well with the February map is because Turbine released all the expansion terrain before Throne of Destiny.

Going forward, the accuracy will become less and less as Turbine continues to make changes.

perhaps I'm not understanding something.

why doesn't someone just update the program? the changes to the .dat file format are fairly trivial. the superblock data has shifted a bit, and directory entries have some added fields. that's about it -- the remainder of the .dat file structure is still the same.

is the map generating program part of AC Explorer itself? if that's the issue, then I see the problem. but there's an easy solution -- we just need a program that converts the new client_cell_1.dat file into a pre-ToD format cell.dat file. that shouldn't take more than a few hours.

Its not really an issue at all.

There are two ways of updating the map in ACexplorer

1)use the built in function that reads from cell.dat (broken by file format changes).
2)replace the map manually in the ACexplorer install folder.

The map is the file dereth.bmp and is a simple 2041 x 2041 bitmap, colour depth can be anything from 8 to 32 bits.
The map is not stored internally in ACexp, the built in routine updates this same file.

All you need is a program (such as Paint Shop Pro) to read any current map (such as the png from Dereth Explorer) and save it as a 2041 x 2041 bitmap.

The only variations come from the size of the map file.

ACexplorer uses 2041 x 2041
Dereth Explorer uses 2048 x 2048
Terragen uses 2049 x 2049

The larger maps are identical to the Acexplorer map they just have extra padding on the four sides.
So open the png, remove 3-4 pixels from the top and left and 4-3 pixels from the right and bottom and save it in bitmap format, job done.

The map generator is part of ACExplorer. The author (Zugg) isn't going to change ACExplorer because he does not get enough sales per year to justify the effort. So we are stuck at the moment with Zugg isn't going to do it and it does not work.

As you mentioned, there are other solutions to this problem outside of ACExplorer. Someone has to do it. So far noone been particularily interested in writing a small app that generates an ACExplorer compatable map or a Dark Majesty cell.dat from client_cell_1.dat.

If a new map was generated we could probably get it hosted somewhere.

it will take a few hours for sourceforge cvs replication to occur, but when it does you will find a new utility "CellConverter" at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/acdev/DatUtils/#dirlist

this utility will convert an AC:ToD client_cell_1.dat file into an AC:DM cell.dat file that you can use to regenerate maps, or whatever.

using anonymous pserver access, get the following files from sourceforge cvs:

acdev/DatUtils/CellConverter/bin/CellConverter.exe
acdev/AC.DatFile/bin/AC.DatFile.dll
acdev/AC.Utility/bin/AC.Utility.dll

I think that's all you need, but I didn't check. come to think of it, I didn't really test it at all, other than to run chkdat on the output file to verify that it's properly formatted, but it should work fine anyway. I might package it up into something more easily downloaded in the future, but right now I don't have time.

Thanks Ken for doing the work on the updater happy . Unfortunately I'm too dense to know what to do with the files I downloaded. Do I just put the .dll's in the ACToD folder? Do I have to do anything to configure the Cell Converter? Sorry for the dumb questions, I just don't want to screw anything up.

you put all 3 of those files in the same place.. I'd assume the AC:ToD folder.. then run the .exe file

it should convert the cell for you and then you just use ACExplorer Update on the cell.dat that was created.

(that would be my guess at least)

As Drakier said, put the .exe and the two .dll into the AC folder.

Open a Command Prompt, type "cellconverter client_cell_1.exe"

After a moment it will have generated a cell.dat in your AC folder.

I ran AC Explorer v3.40 against the freshly converted cell.dat and generated a new map and updated the terrain. As far as I can tell it worked as there weren't any errors. As I haven't been anywhere near the new high-level island(s) in the northeast my map wouldn't show them.

- EDIT -
I ran around the northeast coast, converted a new cell.dat and generated a new map in AC Explorer. The new island does, indeed, appear now. Worked like a charm.

I've also realized that AC Explorer v3.40, and probably earlier versions, won't know where the cell.dat is by default as the regkey changed in ToD. As a result you'll have to tell it where the cell.dat is every time you need to update your map unless you copy the cell.dat into your AC Explorer folder. So...

"cellconverter d:\games\ac\client_cell_1.dat d:\games\acexplorer\cell.dat"

This assumes AC and AC Explorer are installed in those locations. Also, you can put cellconverter and it's two dlls anywhere you want (as far as I can tell).

Anyone know where a 12mb picture can be uploaded for mass downloading, LOL? Have a nearly complete map from our current Client_Cell_1.dat, but no where to upload. Only like 5 or 6 landblocks still highlighted green, but they are in the water (dungeons) or at the peaks of mountains (prolly unreachable).

Anyone else notice that one of the 3 beta islands was updated with new content, but it's unreachable?

Can't believe I was that stupid, but yeah, now it's 3.1mb's. Small enough for a GeoCities site (yes, I'm cheap) but you can still only get 2 downloads of that per hour on their site. If someone wants to host it, I can email it to them.

This is just the bmp, unedited by myself.

going to bed then going to work. g'luck to others, but thank ye to kgober and everyone else, as I now have the updated map that I wanted and can now tell where I need to go to clear up the rest.

by the way, there's no reason I can think of off the top of my head why CellConverter shouldn't also be able to produce a valid pre-ToD portal.dat file (though it will of course try to name it "cell.dat" if you don't specify otherwise).

so you can use it to generate PortalOpus-compatible portal.dat files (though it won't help PortalOpus cope with the new image file formats), or whatever the portal.dat-viewer-du-jour happens to be.

If one of the green blocks is on a mountain, you can still get it. Use /render radius 25 to increase your render radius and go to any spot near the mountain (up to 25 blocks distance) and the missing block will be loaded. Works for some spots in the water, too.

Those errors are usually related to the .NET Framework not being installed, or being corrupt.

Make sure you have whatever version the program was compiled for, and make sure it is all updated.

I get a similar error if I run the app without any of the necessary command line parameters.

Chazcon, are you pointing specifying the target .dat? If not, scroll up a bit to one of my previous posts.

If you are using command line parameters.... umm, never mind, good luck.

I'm bored so here are step-by-step instructions for setting up and using CellConverter. These instructions are based on CellConverter v1.1 and assume you have Windows XP and know how to use it (XP that is). These instructions come with no warranty, guarantee or support, either implicit or implied. If your computer bursts into flames while following these instructions it's between you and your god, leave me out of it.

1: Download CellConverter v1.1 (figure this out on your own). It will consist of three files: cellconverer.exe, ac.datfile.dll and ac.utility.dll
2: Make a folder called CellConverter
3: Copy the three CellConverter files into the CellConverter folder
4: Navigate to the CellConverter folder, right-click cellconverter.exe and select "Create Shortcut" in the context menu that appears
5: Right-click the freshly created shortcut called "Shortcut to CellConverter.exe" and select "Properties" in the context menu that appears
6: Add the following, without the quotes, to the end of the existing command in the Target field, " client_cell_1.dat cell.dat". Note the space at the start. An example, "e:\cellconverter.exe client_cell_1.dat cell.dat" (again, without the quotes)
7: Copy your current client_cell_1.dat from your AC folder into the CellConverter folder
8: Double-click the shortcut
9: Do with your warm from the oven cell.dat what you will
10: Thank Ken for making and sharing this utility

Even easier:

put the three files in your main AC folder and you don't have to move the client_cell_1.dat each time.

I think CellConverter was built using Visual Studio .NET 2003. that means it should work using the .NET Framework 1.1.

Yeah, I said that on October 9th. But, I don't like to mess with my primary .dat file just in case something goes wrong. As you (and maybe other folks) were having an issue I took a minute to write up the steps.
