WTF, I'm too much of a noob for the Rikostan spotlight tongue

My favorite way to relax: massage, either giving one or receiving it. Second would be cooking--I'm baking ham bread now. And then the standard personal ad stuff, walks on beaches, reading, movies, climbing Kilimanjaro or walking 500 miles on a medieval pilgrimage...

My favorite country to live in? I was just going to post about that! We're in Finland for another year, then we have to pick a place to live next year. I want to try Spain, maybe buy an old stone house on the Costa Brava and restore it.

Other possibilities are London or New York. Personally, I feel home is California, although I was born in Japan.

I could never live in Japan. I don't stay there longer than 3 weeks, max, before my insane Jesus freak relatives drive me nuts. Some Japanese people are also very mean to my Venezuelan hubby. One old man cornered me on the street when I was walking with him and called me a prostitute.

Paris was not easy, but it was one of the most rewarding places I've ever lived. We might go back to France next year.

I'd also like to try living in India or China. So where should I live, ACF?

Weird factoids about me: I grew up in a trailer, was an illegal alien, and went to Bob Jones University's Elementary School. I'm the oldest of 6 kids, and my family were underground Christians in Japan since the 16th century.

I would like to hear more about the 500 jaunt. I would give that a try, but only if they handed out a free beer every 100 yards.

How many languages do you speak or understand and what are they?

The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is the walk of a lifetime, and plenty of cervezas all along the way tongue

in the Rioja wine country, one of the monastery/wineries has a free fountain for pilgrims. One faucet gives water, the other wine!

It's very cheap (hostels are free or at most a couple of euros, meals are under 10 euros for 3 courses.) if your knees can stand it. I loved the Templar ruins the best. It took me 29 days of walking to do it, but I was in Spain 2 months.

Languages I can converse in:
Japanese
English
Spanish
French

Languages I can understand if spoken:
Italian
Portuguese
Korean (basic)
Gallego/Catalan

Languages I can read:
Some Chinese
Latin

Note: Finnish is not one of these languages, and I don't think it will be, even though I live here. I give up.

Bonjour, Mosha! Maybe I'll ask you to keep an eye out for a good apartment--with a kitchen this time, OK?

Roxor, you're right, but my Estonian and Hungarian are even worse than my Finnish.

Other weird facts: I was 18 when I saw my first movie, "Chariots of Fire." I thought there was only one runner in the story.

I was 20 when I heard of the Beatles for the first time, 26 when I got my first pair of jeans.

OT: AC was the first time I played a video game. Dekara was my first and only main, an extreme tank archer, 10 strength start. I played her to level 61, the first 13 levels in an unbuffed faran robe. Took me that long to find out about buffing tongue

Gee, maybe I should have a string of houses and commute grin

Spain would be cool. Lots of exciting things happening there now. Probably have the best chefs in the world--sorry, Mosha.

But where in Spain? Barcelona is my favorite city in Europe, but it's inconvenient for work/flights.

Hubby's family is from Galicia, near Santiago de Compostela.

No air bases in Scotland? Outrageous.

Maybe you'll be stationed at my brother's old base, Mildenhall. He used to have a cool condo in Cambridge, with a liittle garden and everything. Great for roaming Wolves.

I remember riding little commuter buses to Edinburgh. Scotland love

Machy, I was in Valencia for the Louis Vuitton Cup races in October. We watched from the fabled "Christina O," where Onassis married Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly married Prince Ranier. I had paella on the beach in Heminway's hangout, La Pepita, but it was only so-so. The new science and oceanography park is astounding. When they finish it. it will be as cool as the Guggenheim Bilbao.

In Spain... Espanyol and Barcelona...

but Valencia is where the spanish go to vacation/party and stuff... so I figure it'd be the most fun. (I'd have to take a train and check out the culture in Madrid, Southern coast, and Northern spain near the Basque area... then spend the rest of the time partying with the spanish)

You'd get along great with my hubby then, a die-hard barca fan. We were in Camp Neu when they won the spanish league the 3rd time in a row. Now THAT was an incredible, 4-day, 4-night, horns blaring, screaming-out-the-window, girls wearing only barca bandanas and racing past on scooters PARTY.

Actually, most of the people partying in Valencia are Brits and Northern Europeans, packed like sunburned sardines on the beaches. In Madrid and Barcelona, every night is a city-wide fiesta. Dinner is 11:00, 12:00 is considered the right time to think about going out. At 4 AM, there are people out strolling Las Ramblas or the Madrid parks, hanging out, having drinks in neighborhood bars.

The basque country is less festive, but it has great cuisine and an interesting culture.

Salamanca is an awesome academic town, even if you aren't a student. Lovely architecture, fabulous food, students from all over having fun.

Barcelona is going to win La Liga this year... Smauel Eto'o already has like 13 goals!!! They are also a heavy favourite in the Champions League...

The Barcelona vs. Ac Milan game had 94,000 screaming Barca fans in Camp Neu a few weeks ago! I was just shock ... Jealous.

Ok Machy, you have proved yourself worthy! Can you fit into a carryon?

I go to Spain 4-5 times a year. Was just in San Sebastian last week. And walking the Camino makes me feel like I've counted every pebble and cow patty in the country.

So what the heck is Madrid doing with all these star players and no team? They couldn't beat a middle school girls' team at this rate.

Champions League will be a bit dicey because they came into the final 16 a second seed behind AC Milan... so they will have to face a First seed.

If they are lucky they'll get Lyon or Monaco... Everyone else seems pretty strong.

Apologies to Machy and Wolf for cutting off the conversation so abruptly--the power went out, heh.

Mosha, the Santa Claus article is ready, but I've been having issues with the Finnish server. Please let me know if you don't get it.

I'm packing now for Africa. We leave Friday, spend 2 days chilling in Nairobi, the head to Tanzania to begin the Kilimanjaro climb on Monday. Provided we survive, we'll go on a 4-day tent safari to the Serengeti, hopefully in time to see the start of the Great Migration--wildebeests chased by lions followed by hyenas, etc grin

monaco made it to the finals last year so dont underestimate, but they are playing like crap. Lyon finished ahead of manchester and have secured their spot at the top of the french league, very solid team. Barcelona did have a great turnaround this year though. Juventus or Chelsea are my top picks.

As for places in europe, I stayed two years in the south of switzerland, in lugano beautiful area. Few place I enjoyed were, mallorca, capri, cannes and st tropez are beautiful as well. And IMO i liked the nightlife in madrid better than barca.

btw tanzania is beautiful, I went about a year ago on the serenghetti safari, absolutely stunning, funny part was none of our group had any problems but the driver got malaria at the end heh. You should also check out the masai camps and theres a safari in kenya which is amazing as well. I would definitely advise u to check out zanzibar and if you have time mauritius.

Ok Mosha, I'll try sending it in the body of the e-mail. LONG.

J-Funky, I've wanted to go to Mauritius ever since reading about it in the O'Brien "Master and Commander" series.

Nightlife in Madrid is better than Barcelona and I would not have to learn Catalan, but it's inland in a desert. Cities by the sea ftw.

I've heard Dubai was nice, but this from a friend obsessed with shopping malls tongue

I'm thinking of going to Israel next spring, may make a bigger trip out of it. Egypt *drool*

I was planning to go to Italy's Amalfi Coast for a week in Feb., but I may change that to Mauritius instead.

yea theres a lot of shopping there. I didnt really like Egypt, pyramids are cool and all but I found it a bit boring, best part was the nile though, that cruise was definitely unforgettable. Have you been to Brazil yet?

I drive 50 miles to work each way... and once in awhile I drive all the way to a little town 15 miles from us... Oh yeah and in every season except for spring I walk down to the bar on the bay...
The excitement is almost overwhelming. happy

J-Funky, this was Santiago de Compostela in NW Spain. I met my Brazilian friend walking on a medieval pilgrimage from the French border.

I am so jealous of your life. SO jealous. I would love to travel the world.

*daydreams*

On a side note, Spain is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my entire life. We stayed in Lanzarote for a week a couple of years ago. Absolutely breathtaking.

Lol, anyone would envy my life in Finland tongue

Actually, it's not bad. It isn't Paris, but interesting in its own way. People are very nice to me here, and snow is exotic for me. I even got to visit Santa grin

I spent about 6 months in Calgary. Canada was breathtaking. My favorite trip was a hike we took at Emerald Lake in BC.

How did this thread not obsess about food? I spend most of my time thinking about it.

Definitely the person with the most interesting life on ACF! (What are you doing on a message board?!!)

My hubby and I honeymooned in Barcelona and Ibizza. love I totally applaud your active life and all your travel opportunities! Sounds like you keep very healthy too with all your great cooking skillz. happy Thanks for posting about yourself. Very fascinating reading. I'm reminded of the books, "Under the Tuscan Sun" and "A Year in Provence", although your life totally outdoes theirs. wink

Brazil should be OK-I'm spending most of my time on my friend's ranch. (PS-You're sweet to warn me!)

What I'm really worried about is this weekend in Nairobbery.

I remember you said something about doing one earlier this year.

The Right, what a memory. I decided to climb Kili instead of Machu Picchu this December since I want to do Galapagos on the same trip. I was planning to go to South America for all of July, but now plans seem up in the air...
