My 2000 Acura 3.2TL is finally kicking the bucket. After 12 years, and 190k miles...it now costs more to repair than it is worth.

Looking to buy a 4 door luxury sedan(used because I'm not made of money), and am looking for thoughts and ideas.

Hoping to find one that gets some reasonable mileage, as...well currently, I have 90 miles of commuting every day.

Caveat before Mangler pipes with Buy German, I have not, will not, and will never consider purchasing anything from Germany.

this prolly won't be a popular opinion simply because its kia...but you could get yourself a brand new kia soul for the price of most used cars and have a 5/10 warranty on it as well as get around 30mpg on gas. i just don't see the point in getting something pricey if your main use for it is work commute.

yeah. kia spent years earning their poor rep so its going to take a while for them to turn it around now that they've started producing quality vehicles. their last couple years of vehicles have been exceptionally good though. i think the kia dealer in my area sells more cars than all the other dealers put together. its insane how well they're doing right now. you walk into any of the other dealers and its dead...you can hear the crickets chirping. you walk into the kia dealership and its a madhouse of activity. even if hes set on a sedan he can go for the optima, very nice vehicle but its 10k more. the only problem with kia is buying used is pretty much out since their jump in vehicle quality is only a couple years old now.

I'm willing to check out the Kia's, I hadn't ruled them out yet.

As for the German stuff, I'm totally uncomfortable supporting that country - and someone has already clearly pegged why.

I'll look at the Lexus too.

Thanks for the legitimate ideas so far.

The new Lincoln MKZ that they showed off looks AMAZING though. New Altima looks cool too

Hyundai Genesis I consider a luxury car worth checking out too. 4.2L engine in the sedan, has really nice performance and a great pricetag

There is no point buying a really nice car (BMW, Lexis etc) for a commuter when you are going to drive it into the ground.

Get a used camry or accord, etc.. but be forewarned, Honda likes to rape it's customers at service time.

The commute should be shorter in the next couple months(hopefully).

Also, I'd rather be comfortable.

On the contrary. Driving 90 miles every day is much less aggravating in a nice car. The difference is astounding. I drive an e61 and it is quiet, comfortable, effortless and safe. And when necessary, fast and amazingly enough, fun to drive too.

There's no point in buying a nice car to park in you garage.

Buick Lucerne with all the bells and whistles. We just got rid of ours after putting 100k on it in 4 years. It was comfortable, quiet and we never had a bit of problem with it. We commute 100 miles a day for work.

15 years ago all you saw on the road was Honda's. These days all you see is Hyundai's.

Hey, consumers can't say no to cheap well-made sedans.

GM is still the world's biggest automaker.

Toyota is #2 (in more ways than one...)

Volkswagon is #3 poised to overtake Toyota and may vie for the #1 slot soon.

Lucerne is actually built at the Cadillac factory. My mother in law has a DTS and it was identical to ours except that she had the massaging front seats and heated rear seats and we didn't.

Edit: Oh, and we paid 20k less than her happy

Indeed. The people from WWII are gone.

You can chose to believe me or not (I don't care either way, it's still the truth), German autos are the standard the world over. Rival companies try to emulate them because they are quite simply, the best.

In other words: You can get an imitation, or you can get the real thing.

so how much do car salesmen cut off a price if you pay for it in full right away? In other words, if you buy a new car and pay for it all right then and there?

German is nice but wouldn't you rather buy Russian?

There's much to be said for german engineering, but there's also much to be said for russian industry which btw defeated superior german engineering in WWII through mass production. mmm-hmm

Indeed. Lucerne is DTS-lite.

And the REALLY nice thing is you can get the Lucerne with GM's 3.8 litre V-6. Quite honestly, one of the best engines ever built.

Yes. Go to any Russian speaking country and you'll see a million of these Lada cars.

Which would you rather have, one King Tiger tank or 10 T-34's? Ehhh? Yeah exactly. The Germans found out which was better.

so how much do car salesmen cut off a price if you pay for it in full right away? In other words, if you buy a new car and pay for it all right then and there?
In reality, no matter how you pay for the vehicle, you are paying for it in full upon delivery.

If you have the money in the bank and write the dealership a check for the full amount out of your own checking account (or cash), the car is paid for.

If you have to borrow money from an institution (and make monthly payments to said institution), the dealership gets a check for the full amount of the vehicle.

Either way, the vehicle is paid for.

The only difference is whether the title has a lien on it or not. And that wouldn't matter to the dealership, all it is to them is another bit of paperwork due at signing.

T-34's where good tanks, they revolutionized tank design with sloping armor.

a better comparison would be the M4 Sherman vs Tigers.

yes high mileage is always good for resale

You will go through more tires, oil changes, wipers etc... all those things are more expensive in the beemers etc

I would go with a Japanese car these days as well, Nissan would be my first choice. Their engines are better than BMW's

I don't consider myself "rich." Not by a long shot. But I do have some money, enough to buy a car if I wanted to.

Expert would not be the term I would use; however, I am a car salesman and have been for a long time. I happen to be very good at my job. Doing one thing for a long time allows you to be more skilled in that area than others. I doubt I could go to your workplace and know more about your job than you do. This is my chosen profession, I should know more about it than you do by the very nature of the beast.

I do suggest German vehicles first, yes. Because they are the best. The rest of the automotive industry uses them as a standard. Look at nearly any comparison test, it's "How well does this car/truck/SUV stack up against the German counterpart?" Ask any engineer in Japan, Korea, America, or anywhere else that is designing and building vehicles and ask them who they are trying to emulate and the answer will come back unanimously Germany.

As far as anything else goes, vehicles break. ALL vehicles. Doesn't matter who they are made by, moving parts wear out, no matter how well they are manufactured. Simple fact of life. Are the parts for German vehicles any more or less expensive than any other manufacturer? Not really. It doesn't matter if you don't believe me, it is the truth. If you think parts for a Ford, or Toyota, or GM, or Ferrari, or Honda, or Chrysler, or anyone else is cheaper, you are simply deluding yourself. Vehicles, even the "cheap" ones, are vastly more complex today than 10 or even 5 years ago. Parts get more expensive accordingly. You'll find out, you don't have to take my word for it.

Just because I suggest German vehicles first, doesn't mean that there aren't other vehicles I would/would not recommend. Not everyone likes the same things, that's why there are so many choices available in the marketplace.

Perception VS reality.

hondas and toyotas are made in higher volumes than BMW/Mercedes/Audi. Based on simple percentages alone, you'll see more of them. That does not give any direct correlation to anything else.

There are more GM cars on the road than honda or toyota too, what do you make of that?

Honestly, there have been a LOT of new models that have come out in the past year or two so only time will tell for some of them.

Chrysler has changed nearly their entire product line almost all at the same time. That is an amazing achievement. Time will tell which ones will be the most reliable. That being said, stay away from Dodge Avengers or Nitros.

Chevrolet hasn't had nearly the model turnover that Chrysler has, but they've not been resting on their laurels either. The new Sonic is a nice little car, vastly better than the Aveo it replaces.

If there is a specific vehicle you have questions on, please feel free to ask.

I was at the JEEP store when they introduced the all new Grand Cherokee. The Durango and the Grand Cherokee are essentially the same vehicle. That's a good thing.

Chrysler as a whole really benefited from the short lived Mercedes ownership. The Durango/Grand Cherokee is based on the ML platform and it is superb. All the important details on this vehicle are spot on. The only drawback is that the 5.7 litre engine is a little thirsty; however, if I were to get one the 5.7 litre would be the smallest engine I would consider. The Pentastar V6 is an excellent engine, but it's just a little too small for my tastes in this sized SUV. It's also pared with the older 5 speed transmission. The 6 speed transmission that is mated to the 5.7 is better. win/win

Honestly, I would personally buy one. That's about as strong a stamp of approval as I can give.

It is cramped back there, yes. Would they work in a pinch? Sure. But I wouldn't put anyone back there very long.

If you are looking for 3rd row seating, nothing beats a Suburban.

I posted in someone else's thread about looking at a new vehicle, and I've been doing some reading here: Upscale mid-size cars. Personally, I've been looking at that Buick Regal, ranked #2 on the list.

Buick (GM) has been coming out with some great vehicles as of late. It's not your Grandpa's Buick any more.
