He's a cool guy and it was no big deal, but apparently the neighbors complained to him a few months ago. I told him I'd take care of it and he told me I should because they threatened to call the cops on me if I didn't.
Now, I know from hearing them talk that at least the mother is an illegal, but she has two anchor babies (well, at least one, I just assumed both were). I think the father has residency or a work visa or something, but it was the mother who called the landlord.
I happen to know where she works (her paystubs often don't make it into her mailslot, instead they're usually on top of it, along with most of her mail. I guess they don't collect it often or the mailman sucks). I also know her husband or man always buys the Chinatown copies of movies that are in theatres. I see him with a new movie every day or two and he usually offers to loan it to me when he's done.
They're a really nice family usually, except for the mother. But I can't abide snitches and I absolutely hate hypocrites. So...
I called the ICE tipline and told them an illegal Mexican was selling bootleg DVDs from their home. The officer who followed up told me that they were considered a "removable" illegal. And they would look into it. I gave him her jobs name too.
This was a few months ago. I forgot all about it, but then I realized there were some people looking at the apartment downstairs and my roommate said she saw cop lights outside her window the other night. I haven't seen her in a while, and only one of the kids played out back when it was warmer. The guy has been looking upset lately, and come to think about it, he hasn't offered to loan me a movie in a while. Haven't seen him carrying any either.

Complaining to the land lord instead of calling the cops to correct something she was worried about was pretty nice of her.
Calling ICE and having a family deported and making their children's lives worse is pretty low thing to do over an awkward conversation with your land lord.
What if the reason pot smells bothered her was because she was afraid someone else might really call the cops so she wanted to scare you away from smoking around there?
There are plenty of ways you could cover up your activities. I would have went that method, but if you're satisfied with the outcome congratulations I guess.

The husband/boyfriend/whatever apparently was legal, as he has been around. He could have reported it while she took the kids to the park or some such. Or started working on the neighbors to call...or call anonymously (which probably doesn't have much impact, but still an option).

Well he was probably scared of any attention or something, who knows. Either way them reporting to the apartment complex is just as bad if not worse. Possession is like a fine at most in majority of states and the police doesn't always report that to the landlord. If the landlord hadn't have known him personally he would've been kicked out with a full month's rent gone with no where to stay, and perhaps had the cops called on him additionally as well.
Like it or not, they were being the dicks first and his dickishness was in response to their dickness. They shouldn't have reported him, or at least confront him about it first. But nope. They were being illegal dicks

She attacked, I attacked back. I'm not crying just because she lost. She had ample opportunity to deal directly with me, instead she went over my head. I have a lot to lose if I lose this apartment so I dealt with her action with my own. Decisively.
I didn't break up her family, ICE did. I don't even know if she's deported. She could very well be on a break from her man. For all I know, one of those kids is his and they split. It would explain his sourness. And hell, thinking about it, most of the movies he brought were geared towards kids anyway.

Dealing directly with fellow tenants, especially druggies, is generally not a good idea. You have absolutely no idea what the reaction is going to be and you can end up in a physical fight.
It is also pointless as I've yet to meet the druggie who said "Oops, my bad, I'll stop smoking immediately, sorry about that" The general reaction is profanity-laced with no change in behavior.
Dealing with problem tenants (of which you are one) is part of the landlord's job, so they were correct in going to the landlord. I expect she was just trying to protect her kids.
