The guy replaced the modem with some giant set-top box lookin' thing called an Arris TG852. Apparently it looks the way it does because it has a router built into it. Aside from the amount of space it's now taking up on my desk, I'm pleased with the speeds I'm getting on my Ethernet-connected desktop PC. My laptop, however, saw only a minuscule improvement. I noticed that the Arris does not have any antennae; I failed to discern this detail while the cable guy was here, so I was unable to ask him, "Hey, how come that big box ain't got no rabbit ears 'ttached to it? Won't that give me less megapixels?"

I've been reading up about "bridge modes" and discovered that, with some fair amount of assing about, I can disable the built-in router and use my D-Link in its stead. Would that boost my wireless speed at all or just affect the distance I can go in my house? I'm not really concerned about my laptop's speed but I'm assuming what goes for it also goes for my PS3.

And is there any way to ever get the max advertised speeds you pay for with a wireless connection? I'm now on a 30 Mbit/s plan. Laptop's SpeedTests show ~11 Mbit/s.

1. It has än antenna or more, just attached internally.

2. You will never get fäster speed than what your local WiFi network will sync up to. 11mbps is One of the lowest speeds these days.

3. Yes bridging the cable modem and pitting your own router ön it should work better, uless your router or modem is shitty. (Buggy in router mode)

Try it, youve got nothing to lose!!

No.you're router wont work better.
But you can run a hundred foot cable to it and use it as a switch. Just plug the cable into one of the four ports and leave the single one empty. You'll have wifi available through that one and the other one.

You are getting what you pay for, as evidenced by your wired speed tests. Your problem is your wireless sucks, but that's not your connections fault.

The first thing to do is find out what wireless protocol your laptop maxes out at. If the best you have available is 802.11(b) you're already going as fast as the laptop can and you'll need a better adapter. You want 802.11(n) at the very least.

The best wireless performance I've gotten is when using a dual-band 802.11(n) Wireless Bridge rather than any kind of router. Like so:

It creates a wireless network that talks directly to your existing router. They work best in pairs to extend coverage which makes this option kinda pricey, but effective. I use two Netgear WNHDE111 (which are no longer available) and get a sustained 80Mbps, despite being encrypted with WPA2, between my computer room where the router/internet is and my living room - fully capable of streaming Netflix or my media files without issue.

Its called a dory DOCSIS3 (D3) EMTA. It has phone, eternet, wireless internet capabilities. Its a great gateway per say, but does have some known range issues from time to time, mostly due to firmware issues. They are pretty good though. Just make sure that your signal and wiring is up to par and youll love it. If not your gonna hate it.

Where do you live? I didn't realize they offered decent internet speeds anywhere in this country. I can't get more than 25 mpbs in my area of oakland. angry
