Keep it. It will cause more trouble to return it.

This is not a big thing. On all big things do the right thing and report them to the company

I'd definitely call just to see if it was a gesture for the late delivery. If so I'd want to thank them and let the person who made that decision know I was pleased. If it was a mistake I'd like the company to get their tool back. But only after suggesting how pleased I am that someone in their company choose to go that extra mile for my satisfaction.

The answer you get will depend on the company and the customer service rep you get. You might not like the answer you get. They might just bill you for the other one if you dont send it back. You never know how a company will respond.

I'd have no desire to rip them off. However at the same time I'd have even less desire to be inconvenienced because the company made a mistake.

I'd probably give it to a neighbor and tell them it's a gift from the company.

I'd call. I can hardly see a company paying return shipping, and if they have even halfway decent CS they won't threaten to charge you for the item you didn't order/want, as it's their mistake.

That said, if they DID demand that I pay for the item or pay to ship it back, I'd ask for the CS rep's supervisor first. If things didn't change with the supervisor, I'd notify them I'm never shopping with them again, and will make the lack of CS known to friends/family.

Was the product made in America? If you, find your closest charity organization that works with gardens.
Detroit Childrens Hospital has some greenhouse areas for the kids to get into growing plants.
They have found that giving the kids something living to tend to often gives them a goal, something to look after, and it helps rejuvenate their healing process.
After donating it call the company and tell them that you received two, that you donated one to charity in their name and told the charity you highly recommend the company for any further purchases. This makes you look good, the company look good, and notifies them that they overshipped and they can look into correcting that.

Was the product made in China? Call the company and tell them you never received one.

IF you don't report the over-ship you are stealing.

IF you do report the over-ship the shipper/picker may be disciplined/fired.

Me, I'd take one from the box, seal the other inside and wait 6 days to see if they reproduce.

I'd email them. I have been in a similar situation before and did just that. Although I have to admit that wasn't just some cheap gardening tool where the effort + time is probably worth more than the item in question.

Keep it.

Maybe give it as a gift, or sell it.

Or keep it until the other one breaks.

Regardless it's yours now.

Hehe this has been good, thanks. This of course happened to my wife this week.

My position was, "Keep it. Leave it unused for about 4 weeks and if they don't come looking for it, it's yours. It'll be more hassle and shipping cost than it is worth to inform them, have YOU repack it, and return it. And frankly, they probably don't care."

My straight-arrow wife, she of course was full tilt on, "Of course I need to call them and ask what they want to do. I didn't pay for this."

I'll show her the thread later to let her know that, yeah, the opinions are pretty much split on this.

PS: If this was like $100 or more, then I would recommend calling the company immediately. That amount is worth *someone* paying the shipping to get it back in stock.

If you have the return slip it doesn't cost anything to return it, and since the packing slip said qty 1, it was clearly an error. They are equipped to note on the packing slip when they send you an extra gift, it's already happened to me.

So, i'd return it, since it costs me nothing and it wasn't intended for me.

IIRC, it is pretty much established law in most every state that you are not required to pay for items that you are sent without your request. Unscrupulous publishers used to scam people this way, they'd start sending people magazines out of the blue and then after a few issues they'd send a bill demanding payment. Courts have ruled over and over that this is a scummy practice. It is perfectly legal for companies to send you stuff you did not order but they cannot demand payment.

A $16 tool would cost more to do anything with it. Phone calls, shipping, packing and unpacking, restocking, and data entry. I would be doing them a favor by keeping the $16 tool.
