Fruit is always always a great option. Grapes, strawberries, apples, peaches, that kind of thing. Veggies too! Also think of drinks. Sodas/juice/etc. Potato chips or other finger-snacky tasty things. I also looooove devilled eggs and/or egg salad, but it'll need to be chilled. I would recommend no matter what you bring, keep it all chilled in a cooler and stuff it in the basket at the last possible minute!
Seriously apart from raw meats and super-spoilable foods (I wouldn't bring milk, for instance, but cheese is good!), the possibilities are endless!

Whatever you choose, you want things that aren't "messy" to eat just because it's a pain on the picnic to get cleaned up after. Also pick things that don't require a lot of utensils. If you have to use a lot of utensils, you also have to have a sturdy place to set the plate or bowl too... often this is troublesome at a picnic if you don't have a proper table. This is why I don't like things like ribs, barbecue chicken, super juicy fruits that run all down your face (e.g. watermelon that isn't cut off of the rind) and so forth...
I like the idea of pre-cut cheese and grapes and sliced fruit.
If you're willing to really put together a nice little recipe, try this one:
Roquefort Grapes
4 ounces Roquefort cheese (can sub in bleu or similar if you like)
4 ounces cream cheese
a cup or two of crushed pecans or walnuts (not powdered, but crushed to approximately half cm size pieces)
a pound or so of your favorite type of seedless grape
Step 1: place crushed walnuts/pecans into a dry saute pan and heat up just until you start to smell the nuts roasting and see a tiny bit of smoke. Move them around in the pan a while to get the oils all nice and heated up and to sort of intensify the flavor. You're trying to lightly toast/roast the nuts, not burn them... After they've roasted like this for 3 or 4 minutes, remove from heat and transfer to a bowl or plate to cool.
Step 2: wash and dry grapes and let them sit - pick out any semi soft ones and discard or do something else with them.
Step 3: Mix roquefort with cream cheese thoroughly. It helps if you let these cheeses sit out at room temp for a few hours to soften up.
Step 4: Take a pinch - about a half a tablespoon or so of the cheese mixture and spread it around a grape with your fingers - your aim is to fully coat the grape with the cheese.
Step 5: Roll cheese covered grape in crushed nut mixture, being sure to cover it up pretty thoroughly with the nuts - so no cheese is poking through around the nuts. You should end up with a "grape" that is just a little smaller than a golf ball and which you can pick up with your fingers and not get cheese on your hands because the nuts cover it.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you're out of grapes, cheese, or nuts.
Package grapes in something suitable like a tupperware type container that won't let them get crushed and refrigerate them until you're ready for your picnic.

Oh, another nice picnic recipe too:
Mushroom Salad (like egg salad)
Lightly saute some white button mushrooms with a little olive oil, salt and pepper. Stop cooking them before they start weeping too much water. Remove from heat to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap for a while to cool.
Gather other ingredients that you typically like in egg salad including things like:
White or red onion, whichever you have on hand, chopped fine 1/4" dice max.
Mayonnaise
Mustard (dijon or spicy brown)
Paprika/Cayenne pepper/etc.
Also get some Worcestershire sauce
When mushrooms have cooled down, chop them up into roughly 1/4" to 1/2" dice.
Mix mushrooms with above ingredients, adding worcestershire a few drops at a time to taste.
Spread like egg salad between a couple slices of bread and enjoy.
