I haven't seen any in Julian but I do see them often here in San Diego. I think it's just too cold up there for them. There's a mountain to the left of the shot in the first panorama that still had snow on it.

Thanks! Here's an example of what goes into one of mine



The trick is to rotate around the cameras axis to reduce geometric distortion. It'll happen regardless with a cellphone though. Basically objects get distorted towards the edge of the image. So something that's [---] big in one shot may be [-------] big in another and the software would have trouble matching the two points up to stitch.
