NBC told this blog today that it would investigate its handling of a piece on the “Today†show that ham-handedly abridged the conversation between George Zimmerman and a dispatcher in the moments before the death of Trayvon Martin. A statement from NBC:
“We have launched an internal investigation into the editorial process surrounding this particular story.â€
Great news right there. As exposed by Fox News and media watchdog site NewsBusters, the “Today†segment took this approach to a key part of the dispatcher call:
Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.
Here’s how the actual conversation went down:
Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.
Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?
Zimmerman: He looks black.
The difference between what “Today†put on its air and the actual tape? Complete: In the “Today†version, Zimmerman volunteered that this person “looks black,†a sequence of events that would more readily paint Zimmerman as a racial profiler. In reality’s version, Zimmerman simply answered a question about the race of the person whom he was reporting to the police. Nothing prejudicial at all in responding to such an inquiry.
In an appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity,†Brent Bozell, president of the conservative Media Research Center, called this elision on the part of â€Today†an “all-out falsehood†— not just a distortion or misrepresentation.
And it’s a falsehood with repercussions. Much of the public discussion over the past week has settled on how conflicting facts and interpretations call into question whether Zimmerman acted justifiably or criminally. That’s a process that’ll continue. But one set of facts in the is ironclad, and that’s the back-and-forth between Zimmerman and the dispatcher. To portray that exchange in a way that wrongs Zimmerman is high editorial malpractice well worthy of the investigation that NBC is now mounting.

I don't think anyone really knows who the real victim is as the situation has been so grossly distorted at every turn it has precluded the public's ability to arrive at a reasonably informed conclusion. The public is being deliberately whipped up into a dangerous frenzy by media manipulators. You should be asking yourself why and what to do about that.

I've asked the questions.
Why is this happening?
Because there is a vacuum left from the lack of normal court proceedings as we all expect them. The media has filled that vacuum.
What is the result?
People exposing their least desirable attributes and deep seeded fears. This could be a dialogue about how we all percieve race, the paranoia and stereotypes we all hold, and the reality of racial profiling in law enforcement. The dialogue could have been elevated, and this event could have been harnessed as a teaching moment. Surprise! It wasn't.

They showed the police surveillance video from the station, but they put a banner (that didn't even have any text on it) over Zimmerman's head whenever it was close to a camera, and edited out the part where the police officer was examining the back of Zimmerman's head.

A kid that bought some skittles got killed on the way home - his crime being black in public.
That's all he had done. Maybe he was also criminally wearing a hoodie.
Anyone that is going completely anti- the victim here is in need of some mental help and is morally bankrupt.
I can see 'give Zimmerman his day in court' but I can't see 'the kid should've listened'. In hindsight we know for a fact the kid had done nothing illegal and was legally allowed to be where he was. We also know that Zimmermans behavior was harrasment and his behavior which was very erroneous led to the death of an innocent person.
We have the right to fight back if someone comes at us - end of story. Zimmerman came at him, Martin has the right to stand up for himself. Police can't just pull up to anyone and harrass them without due cause and same goes for private citizens (due cause is not 'he was in my neighborhood'). A private citizen can't just go up to anybody (especially a minor) and attempt a citizens arrest - that's kidnapping.
Essentially, Zimmerman was behaving like a gangster on his turf.

This story is actually on many sources now, including the LA Times. However, it is a bit buried; I can't help but think the media isn't comfortable reporting on the failure of another media source.

So when the police investigate a crime, determine that the facts and evidence gathered at the crime scene, including at least one eye witness indicate that no crime took place...they should arrest a person and send them to court anyway in fear that if they don't the media will start falsifying evidence?

That attitude more than anything is why there is such a backlash against Trayvon Martin and his supporters. Trayvon might very well have been the victim of a racially motivated killer that night but even with the police now being heavily leaned on to arrest Zimmerman and prove it, they have still been unable to get the evidence needed to secure an arrest warrant. Neither have the Feds.
If the new standard for arresting and sending someone to court is people "think" that something happened...there will be an awful lot of blacks going to court.

I'm guessing someone at Today decided the real tape was not racist and had to doctor it a bit to get the story across. Clearly the Today is not a news show. Of course Fox's morning show had done it I'm sure the liberals would be yelling about Fox News.
