Actually it's as much friendship advice as anything.

Background: A good friend of mine is a handyman. He's really good at what he does and can do pretty much anything. He's done everything you can think of, up to and including building new homes from the ground up. I have full confidence in his abilities. He's constantly busy (even in the horrible FL construction market) and I've seen his work on other houses so I know he's good.

About a month ago we noticed a crack in the tub of our master bath. We stopped using it once we noticed the crack, but I had no idea how much leakage had occurred before we noticed it. The crack got worse thanks to my heel so we stopped using that tub (it was also a jacuzzi). We decided to let our buddy replace it for us. He came over and gave his assessment: Replace the tub, tile would need to be replaced, probably the floor tile as well since we're not installing a new jacuzzi. We agreed to let him do the work. A week later he came over with his crew and they demo'ed everything. It now looks thusly:

That's one of our fat cats enjoying the scenery. The water hose is from outside, we also have a valve leak that needs to be fixed and unfortunately the only fix is new faucets so I jury rigged that up to keep the thing from filling up and overflowing (buckets were obviously cumbersome).

Anyhoo, as his guys tore out the tile and tub he gave us a list of things to buy to replace everything. We bought a new tub, surround, tile for the floor, grout, green board, caulk, faucets, everything. We got the stuff the next day. That was a week and a half ago. Since then, I can't get in touch with the guy. He won't return my calls or answer texts. I gave him a check last Friday (not last night, Friday before) at our weekly 1/2 cash game and still nothing.

How long should I give this guy before calling someone else? We need the bathroom fixed. I don't want to jeopardize our friendship and it would make things REALLY awkward at the poker game to get someone else in here but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. How long should I expect to wait?

[EDIt] that's 3 days total, not 3 more days. you've already been too kind.

Ash you are not the one jeopardizing the friendship. You got what he requested the next day, paid him with a check, and he has been a ghost for a week and a half?
Call into your next poker night and cancel, informing someone else at the card game taht you can't make it because your gal got hurt on the tore out bathroom and you are rushing her to the hospital.
Your friend will be there the next day to complete the project.

You need to have a functioning shower/bath so I would call someone Monday. Best case he had some kind of emergency and should understand you needing to get the work done worst case you are attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis.

Show him this thread.

Tell him what you just told us. I have to run a few jobs at once to make ends meet. If I can push one off a day or two to finish another job I will. Friends are hard because they stay silent instead of speaking up. You don't have to be mean about it but you have to be firm and clear. Be friendly and let him know you need it done or else you'll get some one else.

Don't pay until finished. I won't even take a deposit. I get paid when the job is done.

Ash he shut off the water to your entire house? A week and a half ago? That isn't friendship mate.
Get ahold of him or anyone close to him to make sure he isn't dead or hospitalized, but he is being a massive douche to you.
Did you clean him out on card night or something? Would he be the type to stick you in a bind like this and then extort a higher price than agreed?

I gave him $200 just to get him started. He didn't ask for it, and when i handed him the check he said, "You don't have to give me this." It was just a gesture of good faith. I bought all the mats, I'm just paying for labor.

The way I see it, I've paid for the demo and we're pretty much square at this point. I'd really rather he did the work because his work is top notch, plus I don't want to lose a friend over it. But damn.

No he said the only way to stop that leak (which was bad and getting worse day by day) was to shut off the water to the house. That was the day of the demo. That was before we bought a new Pfister (lol) faucet/shower head, which includes a valve. The old valve is shot. The hose you see in the pic going from the old pipe to the drain is something I rigged up to route the water into the drain. Before I did that we were replacing 5-gallon buckets every six hours.

ETA: So essentially we are wasting 5 gallons of water every six hours for a week and a half. You do the math. Our water bill may cost me more than the remodel.

I didn't clean him out any more than usual, but honestly I think he makes more than me. The guy is ALWAYS working. I have to think that he's just really busy at this point. He told me before he agreed to do the job that he was busy. It's probably my fault for not nailing down a timeline before hiring him.

Hey dude, I know you are busy and shit, but I can't wash my ass in my bathroom. If you can't finish it, cool. Just let me know so I can find someone else. You got any recommendations? Thanks. Your friend...the guy whose bathroom is broken.

Thanks.

If not for my old lady I would probably not have even posted this. We have a second bathroom but she's right, this is getting ridiculous.

He did not show up to this past Friday's poker game, I was going to hopefully nail it down that night.

Not very weird at all. He might have been trying to work you in because you were a friend. He most likely has a bigger money job that he is trying to get to a point where he can break back away from it for you. Good contractors are always juggling. I waited 6 weeks for a friend to restart and finish mine. They always vanish hehe.

It is very hard to do work and bid work to stay ahead. Thats why I threw away my tools! Better to just have more employees at some point.

IF you aren't handy enough to fix that leaking pipe (boggles my mind that you can't), then hire a plumber to do that pronto.

Then look for a home renovator to install your stuff. Get at least 2 quotes in writing.

Wow dont loan money to friends or have them do work for you. Consider loans to friends and families gifts and forgive them if they dont pay you back. With jobs its more complicated.

Dont put business between friendship. Remember that Sopranos episode in which one of his friends he grew up with as a degenerate gambler?

Looks like that opening was built for a sunken shower. Surprised you had a tub in there. Was it a fiberglass built in? If you dont plan on living there for more than 5 years or so id suggest going to a full built in unit so you wont have any tile work to worry about. Problem will be getting the until in there lol.

If you have money to spend, go with a tile or marble shower stall.

We got a fiberglass surround and a matching tub from Home Depot. It came as a set. There was a jacuzzi in there before and the walls were tiled.

That sucks, i wonder why he wont return your calls? even if it's too say he's going to be late.

edit: Altnhough this is typical contractor labor. We had some guys do work at the froint of our house. They built a beautiful new structure and it looked awesome at the end. But they disappeared for 2 weeks - i think one of the guys was an alcoholic or something. They did good work but from what i've heard, it's typical with contractors. A lot of them have mental and money problems.

Im a business man, who had to choose to turn business away, in order to serve the clients I have with the time and attention they deserve and require. Certain jobs you cannot leave half completed. Yours is one. Imagine a doctor starting a surgery , getting a phone call and leaving you on the operating table until he finished another operation. You simply must speak up. If you dont he will continue to service those screaming the loudest for him to finish their job.

The lesson to be learned is to establish some time boundaries at the beginning. And the guy doing the job needs to turn people down.

he guy's a 'friend', has missed poker and coming back and isn't answering calls.

Maybe he's ill or had a family issue.

Don't be an ass about this and spoil a friendship - follow my earlier advice.

ps: home renovators aren't the same as handymen imo - do some BBB checks and get the quotes BUT get the plumbing fixed NOW!

The BBB is crap. They pestered me to sign up with me for a year. I declined. I recently looked up my company on their site and they gave me a crap review and I NEVER NEVER had any complaints. They are like those thugs that make you pay them for protection and then when you don't they rob you. The BBB is CRAP!!!

If you don't start nothing there wont' be nothing. I'd be nice about it call and leave him a VM saying "Hey man I hope things are ok. I haven't heard from you in a while. My tub is a mess, so if I don't hear from you today or tomorrow I'mma see if I can get somebody else in. I don't want to use someone else because I know you will rock the house, but I don't want to pressure you if you don't have time to fix it."

if he gets mad after that fook him. but I doubt he will. He will either call you and schedule or be glad you took it off his plate.

I don't understand why the friendship is an issue at all. If he wants to end your friendship over something like this, he was never a friend. If you want to end it, well, that's your call but you could just as easily not use him professionally again and go back to playing poker.

Hire someone else to finish the job, as much as he might be a great handyman, he isn't worth jack if he won't finish the job.

I was told by someone once that the BBB was started by Al Capone. I have no idea if this is true but what they do sounds exactly like what Capone did (ie, paid protection).

Subject: Need wise Outpost advice regarding a home improvement
I am going to call him again today, if he doesn't at least give me a time frame I am going to find someone else, who will probably dick me around even more.

The problem with calling someone else is that I have already bought most of the stuff I need based on what this guy uses. I really don't want to have to haul all that stuff back to Home Depot just because the next guy prefers to use stuff bought exclusively at Lowe's or something stupid.
