I feel like the scene in Hurt Locker where a mud wall stopped a .50 cal. It's just too preposterous.

Han did use it as a distance measurement. He made the Kessel Run in less distance than anyone ever because he skirted a black hole at the edge of it to do so.

The kessel run is a set distance, to avoid a black hole, he went closer to the black hole to do it in less distance.

I get greater lulz at the use of "Earth-independent" parsec units of measurement that are in fact tied more closely to Earth than a light year.

Parsecs are based on both the "Astronomical Unit" or AU, which is the distance of the Earth from the sun, and our 360 degree measurement of a circle, not even a more pragmatic measurement in radians.

At least with a light year, one might expect a planet with an ecology similar to Earth's to have a similar year. It might have a similar AU as well, but there's no reason to believe that it will split a circle into 360 equal degrees, each of those parts into 60 equal minutes, and each of those parts into 60 equal seconds.

I get a laugh at the idea that you demand a fictional universe use your measurements of time OR distance?

the earth does not travel in a perfect circle around the sun. so you know.

if it did it would be 360 days in a year, not 365.25 wink

Well, I think it is safe to say that quite a bit of fiction or sci fi takes place outside the possibility of english being spoken. it would be spoken in a galaxy far far away. Which means that the dialogue is auto translated by the author into the language we speak, anyways. There is little chance any of their measurements would be the same, but you can imagine those are translated, too.

Actually, "point five past lightspeed" meant that the Falcon had a Class 0.5 hyperdrive. Class 1 is the baseline, so 0.5 better than that is 0.5 (lower numbers mean faster).
