It's a ridiculous question. See your other thread for the answer.

Go find a 40 lb weight. Lift it. Attach it to a 20 ft rope. Lift it again. Report back and tell us all about it.

Depending on the rope it would weigh a bit more than 40lb. I don't think you throught this out.

I guess I should have just found a forum where I could ask someone from MIT.

What is the square root of rope?

Makes about as much sense as your apparent expectations of the answer to your question.

You've been GIVEN the answer to your question (albeit not in a numerical form), or at least the closest answer you're going to get without actually going to the well and measuring the exact distance and weight of the bucket with water in it...or using a tool to measure it yourself.

i've met & interviewed people from MIT.
they are the biggest dooshnozzles on earth.

if you thought you got a hard time here... nigga please.

trust me we're being kind.

in the interest of good will... your question:

"Does 40 lbs feel heavier if lifted from a 20 ft rope?"
has no context ie heavier than what?
40lbs lifted from a 10ft rope? a 0ft rope?

do you mean 40lbs lifted from the ground vs 20ft below?
from an analytical perspective, it is not at all clear.

before you mentioned a bucket & a well... lifting a bucket that is lying on the
ground vs a bucket that is hanging by a rope 20ft below is something that could be
considered.

it would "feel" heavier based on how you lift it because it is harder to keep the force exactly vertical. More than likely on a 20ft rope you would not only have the weight to contend with but any amount of swinging would cause additional force to be implied since it would no longer be in static equilibrium. It also depends on what set of time you are lifting it and at what rate, etc. If you pull up too hard and then stop causing it to have momentum and go up a bit before falling down, it would again feel "heavier"

and of course the weight of the rope. technique also plays a huge role in how something "feels"

i guarantee you it will not feel "heavier" than it is.
are you daft?

BTW. Friar's estimate of 40lbs corresponds almost exactly with a common 5 gallon bucket.
so no matter what retarded logic or "math" you all come up with. at least his example is
valid and likely applicable to real life. not that we life 5 gallon buckets regularly,
but chances are you will a few times in your life.

well that is what I mean, if a 20ft rope was attached to a 5 gallon bucket that weighed 40lbs at the end. any amount of swinging would cause torque to be applied. the amount of torque applied is dependent on the distance the force is from the pivot point which would add additional force to that point depending what moment in that swing and at what velocity
