Yahoo posted:
A 2008 study from Journal of Risk and Uncertainty explained that households earning under $13,000 per year spend about 9 percent of their income on lottery tickets on average, or around $645 a year.

Holy crap, but people are dumb.

It's enough to start making you believe that RWNs are at least a little bit right about poor people.

it really isn't rocket science. Why do you think there are more and more casino's in our deteriorating central cities? They serve to recycle most of the social welfare transfer payments back into the government coffers. In Milwaukee the downtown casino has lines three deep at every slot machine after the gubmint checks come in.

Yeah, it seems like the people that can afford it the least play it the most.

If you invested that money for 30 years, you'd have a base of $20,000 more to retire on. Considering most of America only has $30,000 saved for retirement, I'd say that's a pretty hefty bump in your standard of living.

Lotteries are an awful way for the government to raise money.

That seems unlikely.

This seems like an article thrown together quickly for the mega millions craze and I bet they misread a study as they quickly scanned it.

It does seem like a lot of money. Although at the crackhead cafe outside our building on 7th street here in SF I see people buying $5 lottery tickets all the time. They are clearly regulars. That's like a 2-3 tickets a week.

I like 'em. It's a completely voluntary tax and unlike paying income taxes you actually have a chance (albeit miniscule) to win mirrions

I agree that the lotto is bad and a tax on the poor/stupid. That said I'm not against the lotto. Before the lotto there was the numbers racket. At least it goes to the political thieves instead of the mob. I just wish they would understand the same thing about drugs. It is a war we have lost and just feeds the different mobs. Just allow it and get the tax. Let the money go into the economy instead of the Mexican drug lords.

I would be happier about it if the money was supplementary funding. It seems that Illinois has just shifted its money around so that the lottery funds most of the road/school budgets rather than bringing in extra for improvements to an already stable tax base.

It makes perfect sense.

People without money are more desparate to find a way to get some than people with money. The phrase "It takes money to make money" comes into play as well.

Wise choice. at 175 million to one odds they stand a better chance of winning the Mega jackpot than they do of ever having Republicans help then out in any way..

I buy like a dollar lottery when it gets to 300 million or so.

I know I will never win, but whatever.

it could happen (yeah right.)

would be awesome though, I like thinking of what I would do with that much money haha.

Probably what the study said is that households with incomes under 13k that buy lottery tickets spend that much. Which I can believe.

People don't realize you have to be either old and near death or already wealthy to win the lottery.

Have never really heard of anyone who is young and broke with a family winning.

I was going to give the Outpost a fake set of numbers, then I thought if the fake set hit I would really kick myself. I figure I have no problem sharing half a billion. WTH, the less I take home the easier life would be.

I actually bought two tickets with the same numbers. Just so you'd only get 1/3rd of the share.

My grandma makes around that or below and plays the lottery pretty much every single day

Her biggest win was 1,000 but I doubt it even comes close for her to break even
