Lots of stuff in there...I know the Penny has been discussed...but the other big one, is age of retirement from 65 to 67. Another one is taking a page out of the Tea Party book and cutting government jobs

The budget will:

- Gradually raise the age of eligibility for Old Age Security from 65 to 67 beginning in 2023.

- Contain no new taxes or tax increases.

- Tell consumers to complain directly to food companies about product labelling.

- Eliminate the penny.

- Eliminate 19,200 government jobs over three years, including 600 senior executives and 7,200 through attrition.

- Reform regulation in the resource industry, including amending the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

- Allow Canadians to claim more goods duty-free at the border. The limit after 24 hours goes from $50 to $200. -YEAH!

- Cap EI premium rate increases to 5 cents a year until the fund is balanced again.

- Cut $2.1 billion from the Department of National Defence over the next three years.

- Give $5.2 billion over 11 years to the Canadian Coast Guard.

- Give $67 million to the National Research Council to refocus on "business-led, industry-relevant research."

- Streamline overall regulatory reviews of major economic projects.

- Provide $275 million to build and renovate schools on reserves.

- Pass legislation to create standards for First Nations education.
- Much needed to improve quality of life, approve.

- Refund $130 million in application and processing fees to skilled foreign workers stuck in immigration limbo.

- Raise the retirement age of public servants from 60 to 65, for new employees beginning in 2013.

- Increase employee-contribution levels to pension plans for those working in Canadian Forces, RCMP, Public Service Commission and parliamentarians.

- Make the Governor General pay income tax beginning in 2013.

- Shut down the Public Appointments Commission, Assisted Human Reproduction Canada, and the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

- Sell official residences abroad, generating $80 million in revenue.

- Standardize all government emails to one system.

- $205 million over one year for Hiring Credit for Small Business.

- Give $50 million over two years to Youth Employment Strategy.

- Give $150 million over two years on Community Infrastructure Improvement fund

- Give $105 million next year to Via Rail for operational and capital projects.

- Give $101 million over next five years for Esquimalt Graving Dock.

- Give $50 million over two years to protect wildlife at risk.

- Provide $450 million for sports facilities in the Greater Toronto Area for the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

- Give $8 million to clean up low-level radioactive waste in Port Hope and Clarington, Ont.

- Provide $44 million over two years to the Canadian Grain Commission to reform their funding model.

- Provide $13.5 million over two years to improve pipeline safety.

- Give $35.7 million over two years to improve tanker safety and inspections, emergency preparedness related to oil spills and updated charts for shipping routes.

- Announce a new global commerce strategy in 2013 that sets trade priorities.

- Provide $9.6 million over three years to the RCMP to fight counterfeiting.

- Give $ 99.2 million over three years to help the provinces create permanent flood mitigation measures.

- The Government has found $5.2 billion in ongoing savings from departmental spending or less than two per cent of federal program spending.

Whatcha think?

Lots of opposition to social program cuts, especially about the age of retirement...

But I think anything that gets the books back to balanced (or surplus) is what we need right now. We were undoing all the good financial management of the Liberals in the LATE 90s, early 2000s...

Flaherty posted:

Flaherty says budget surplus expected in 2015-16.

I don't understand all of the hate towards raising the retirement age. People are living longer, and therefore need to be cared for longer, and the associated costs of healthcare for said people is huge.

Freedom 55 is now Freedom 67.

Well, a large portion of the population is baby boomers, so anything that affects them is a very touchy subject...

And lots of the outrage (even if it's a good idea) is political posturing to gain support.

*shrug*

You're not wrong. Not crazy about it myself, but if you do well in the private sector/personal finances, who cares if you have to wait 2 more years for government money to roll in? Think it's a step in the right direction.

Back in the late 90s the RRSP fund was always a big question mark with the baby boomers coming into the fund en mass. What ever happened with that? Remember the worry that by the time 'the rest of us' got to old age, that the fund would be empty?

my understanding is that this is all West Coast work...as well as upgrading/improving west coast harbours....and a streamlined process to start pushing pipelines from Sask/Alberta/BC to the west coast...and more trade initiatives and focus on trades...and upgrades and streamlined processes for tankers...

All of this means we're moving to be a major player in China/India energy sectors.

Something needs to be done to correct the last five years of fiscal irresponsibly. It would also help if Flaherty would stop siphoning public funds to his private companies.

- Provide $275 million to build and renovate schools on reserves.

It should be way more than that. Especially because they are giving $475m to improve some sports facilities rolling_eyes

Otherwise the budget looks good. The US really needs to take a page from Canada. This country is in dire straights. I hope they do hit a budget surplus in 2016. My hat off the Flaherty if they do.

I realize Canada is a lot smaller but they are also a lot more fiscally sound and are able to have way better stability. Taking ideas from their some of their successes would probably be prudent for the US.

yeah i know lol but American politicians don't give a damn, their retirement money is fine, and its not their money, they'll borrow, steal or beg for new revenue to get their friends more business etc.. and when they do retire they'll get nice jobs at companies that doesn't require them to do actually any work at all.

Yep. That's why it's so tragic that this hasn't been done before now. The Native People basically take a back seat on anything policy related. Oh they get the token 'kiss ass' speeches and words, but policy-wise, it's "we already gave you land and cut you a tax break, you're not our problem now, shut up and go away"

This money is about a swing in ideology as well. Before, if you didn't live on the reserve you did not get government help, tax breaks, and other incentives. So the message was: stay there, we don't want you (and the standard of living and quality of life/opportunity on the reserves is NOT good...). This is to encourage kids to learn, to be able to compete with other kids, and to LEAVE THE RESERVE. It's goal (especially in booming BC with a heavy Native population) is to get young people working and for them to be productive members of society (and then pay taxes).

Sort of amazing the power a country's budget can have...

I understand that but I don't agree with the thought behind the program. Do the kids WANT to leave the Reserve? Has anyone asked Natives what they think would help or improve their situation? I don't agree with just throwing money at a population to get them to simmer down but I wish more was being done to reinvest and redevelop reserves so they could become self-sufficient or at the very least, more independent. I realize that there isn't anything on reserves now, but why not build schools there? I understand this solution might be the easiest option right now, but I feel like providing funds for Natives who must leave the Reserve to utilize them is just another form of assimilation.
