I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with the router you get with FIOS. my issue seems to be that the wireless signal does not broadcast very well. I can be sitting in the same room as the router with a clear line of sight and still be getting only 1 or 2 bars of service. the speeds when downloading through wireless also take quite a great hit as well. i understand that wireless is naturally always going to be slower then a wired connection but its like having dial up. anyone have any thoughts or work arounds to help improve the wireless signal? Thanks.

i'd disable the fios wireless, then stick a wireless linksys router or wireless access point on one of the ports and just connect to that.

would i need to make any special changes in the firmware of the fios router? i thought i remembered trying this a while back and not having any luck due to the 2 routers conflicting with each. any thoughts on a decent linksys router?

all the config would need to be done on the new wireless router. disable routing (if possible), give it a static ip, disable firewall, etc etc etc

i haven't bought one in awhile, so i can't really suggest anything for ya :\ i'd start with newegg and sort by # of reviews.

i will have to take a look. i've always had a linksys before we got fios so i know they are pretty decent. I am pretty sure my fios connection can support wireless N so i figure i would want to go with a wireless N router as well.

Did you try different channel? Sometimes that clears up conflicts.

on the new wireless router, connect it to the one of the ports instead of WAN

Which router do you have? Verizon uses several different makes and models. I have not had any issues with mine and I've had FiOS for over 3 years. You might want to search the specific make and model of router to see if there is an inherent issue with it and then see if you can exchange it for something different.
The make I have is the Actiontec but since I am not home I do not have the model.
As far as channels are concerned I have always had good luck with channel 9 but it really is trial and error for your environment in the house.

i think i have one of the newer models. it was listed as MI424WR (Rev F) on the router itself. i will have to play around with the settings to see which channel is best in my area. i was able to find a nice little tool that scans the wireless networks in the area and shows what channel they are on.

i'm guessing you have the big black boxy looking one? my parents had that one since the fios service came to our area. eventually i told them to call verizon and tell them the router broke so they would send a new one out. it is pretty nice having the gigabit plus the wireless N.

Not that big really, but yeah. Figured I would try to do it when had to swap out a cable card. Either to busy or just too lazy to set it up laugh .

An idea for a router could be the Netgear N900 (WNDR4500). A bit costly but worth it I think.

I have it's old version the WNDR3700 and it has been rock solid for several years. This new iteration is supposed to allow for 450mbit/sec transfer speeds on the 2.4 and 5 GHz radios. Has printer sharing, 128RAM, 128MB flash memory and 600MHz+ processor.

I've had Fios for about 4 years, no problems with the router. We can get a singnal anywhere in the house and out on the deck. Downloading speeds haven't been bad at all on the wireless.

What type of wireless router is it?

its the actiontec MI424WR (Rev F), the standard one they give you with fios service these days.

Those are the same we are going to possibly be using for our FTTP service starting up in two weeks, except we have the slightly newer versions that provide Wireless N. We may be switching to Pace (formerly 2Wire) though.

My suggestion is to do a Factory Rest on it (hold the button in on the back for a full 10 seconds), let it reboot and download any firmware it might try.

After that is done, go in and enable the WiFi setting and crank it up to full power, which it should be on that model of gateway by default anyways.

Test it out.

If it is still crap, take it back and get them to replace it for you because something is probably faulty on it.

anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this router?

http://tinyurl.com/cra3uxo

reviews on amazon seem to be mixed as well as newegg. im not trying to break the bank on this since the wireless is useable in other rooms but it would be nice to get the most our of my service.

So channel changes did not help or anything else?

well i went with a channel change and things seemed to be ok. the true test when i came to update my psvita. the upgrade was 100MB and it took the better part of 6 minutes to download. i thought that was long but i dont know if i am being too harsh. im wondering if its more then just the router, i was trying to watch TV shows off hulu last night and typically i can watch them in HD quality but last night for some reason i was barely getting acceptable quality. I am at a loss at this point over what to do.

edit: when i was watching Hulu last night it was via a wired connection, not a wireless one.

Try running speed tests at various locations while on wired and wireless.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Wireless being spotty would have no effect your wired unless the router was foobar. It could be external issues to you (network issues or something). Or it could just be the router itself. You cannot just replace the fios router though, you still have to have it plugged in for TV if you have that. It is setup with coax usually and if you bridge your new router into the fios router, it will not solve your issue then. Would have to switch the service to ethernet I think or something and even then I am not sure.

I would try doing speed tests. I have 35/35 and sometimes when loading 1080p youtube vids, it is very very slow. So could just be Hulu sucking too.

One thing you could try is to unplug the router. Then also go over to the fios box inside with the battery and disconnect the battery then the power. Let it sit for a few minutes and plug it back in and reconnect the battery. Then turn back on the router. Make sure you are not planning on recording TV at that time happy .
