Most likely, it is more cases being identified as we learn more about it. I doubt the percentages have changed that much at all.

Your own link... "But a 2011 study of twins by scientists at Stanford University concluded that genes account for 38 percent of autism risk and environmental factors 62 percent."

Environment is the predominant factor. Design indeed..... laugh

Indeed, there is no objective laboratory test for it, it is just based on subjective interpetation of symptoms from the DSM... when the next DSM comes out I am pretty sure I could make 8/10 kids qualify with a litle subjective interpretation. I am not saying autism is non existant, but 1 in 88 do not have autism.

I'm pretty sure its a crock of shit.

Autism is becoming as ludicrously over-diagnosed as ADD (that is hyperbole, ADD is so over-diagnosed some of these should go to prison over it).

Its over diagnosed, but I think it has to do with the fact we are having children in our mid thirties.

The problem is the autism spectrum is pretty big, and there are no medical criteria for diagnosis.

Right now all you can do is observe a kid's behavior. If they display enough of the behavioral symptoms then they are diagnosed.

This is a big problem because you could be diagnosing children with the same disorder based on their symptoms, but they might all have a different reason for the behavior.

In a lot of cases there is no question something is going on, but no one can really say what. Even after diagnosis treatment is uncertain. Different things work for different kids. There really isn't anything concrete for anyone to go on.

There are a large number of sensory based disabilities that share symptoms with autism. The autism label is attached to funding so there is an economic incentive to slap the label on.

It's not a crock in itself, but the overdiagnosing may be. I can't say I've met a kid that was diagnosed with autism that I thought was completely normal, but I'm sure they do exist given the broad spectrum of the disorder. I'm also pretty sure doctors are diagnosing specific disorders now for research, funding, and services instead of just lumping everyone together under the "mentally challenged" umbrella as was done until fairly recently.

The figures don't really tell us anything. Although alarming, did rates actually go up? And if they did, why? If women are having babies later in life and that leads to more disabilities (autism, Down's, etc) then it makes sense that rates would go up as well.

And I was serious about my dog. He's an aloof fellow with a lot of odd idiosyncracies. tongue http://www.autism-pdd.net/checklist.html#checklist

Might be more accurate to say...

1 in 88 is now DIAGNOSED WITH Autism.

"symptomatic unspecific" is pretty stupid. Those of you who have seriously disabled autistic kids please don't take aoffense to this. but the autism fear mongering is bad mojo. And it is labeling perfectly functional kids and putting them at an extreme disadvantage for no reason at all.

A lot of AS people are really gifted. I don't see AS as a "disease" or "disorder" more like just a different way the brain is wired, IMO, and a different way of thought than conventional that has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some don't suffer the social disadvantages that are commonly attributes to AS, also

The are two pretty big rival camps in the autism community right now.

There are the ones who think it is environmentally caused and are hoping for a cure.

And people who think it is genetic, and that autistic children are just neurologically different than other people.

I tend to lean towards the latter.

I get sad watching my 5 year old. She does not talk except in things she has heard around her, and it usually is out of context. She does repeat things directly at times but will not carry on a conversation (like repeating good night or I love you but if you ask her if she is ok she just repeats "are you ok"). She sometimes sits for long stretches of time staring at the wall or floor or off into space and looks extremely depressed. The world is an alien place to her as she IS realizing no one else in her life acts the same way as she does. Still will not potty train as she has an aversion to the toilet. Sometimes she lines up change by type in a perfectly straight line and if I pick one up that is not at either end she goes into hysterics like I burned her. She is so sweet and loving to the immediate family but will not play with anyone her age only mommy and daddy.

I am worried that she may never be highly functioning. That she will stay in her own world. I don't worry due to cost as I would give my life if it meant helping her have a better life. I worry because she may never truly understand, value, or experience the things in life that make most people happy.

Autism research is one of those things I hope doesn't get buried, slowed down, and ultimately obfuscated by a bunch of companies worried they had something to do with it.

But with Monsanto et al on the scene, with their ethics?

I believe we can say with confidence that when the next DSM update is published, the pharma-backed authors will have widened the diagnostic scope of autism just a little bit further.

Don't worry.

There is a life in this world for her. As long as you don't give up you can help her find it. She can be happy, and she can experience a full life.

I used to feel hopeless a lot in the past as well. It felt like there was hardly ever any progress, and even felt like he was regressing at times, but then he'd surprise me with something.

Now I just try to keep moving forward. I know he's not going to have a normal life, but I know he can have one worth living.

Just keep loving and learning.

value is subjective. It sounds like your child is happy in a way. nobody is happy the same way as anyone else if you think about it. I am sure it is tragic to have a child that you think won't experience the big milestones. But just squeeze every bit of joy out of life you can and help her do the same. At the end that's the best any of us can do for ourselves and others.

I think its a normal thing that is only now visible because of the over population of humans

It must be some sort of genetic defect. This wasnt even know in the past because so many childen died in at a very early age or at birth. Much like cancer in older people. We have way more cancer now because people now live to an advanced age
