Take the quiz!

It's not spam, I promise, and it doesn't even ask for an email address. It's sort of cool to see where you stack up. wink

The slower you read the longer your books last. I have always read at a really relaxed pace and I don't trust myself to really read as slow as I normally do when faced with a test.

I read as fast as I can read comfortably (like I was reading a text for school) and got 170% faster than average but if I slow down to my casual novel pace it is only ~100% faster.

True, but when I really get into a book, I have a hard time keeping it slow...

454 per minute, but I don't think I can keep that up.

Reading at my normal pace I got 204 wpm - 18% slower than the national average.

But I've always known I'm a slow reader. I like to take everything in when I read. I have tried reading faster, and even skimming before, and it's just not as enjoyable for me.

I got 593 today, 137% faster than average. I've always done well with reading and reading comprehension, though, so it doesn't really surprise me.

I hate these. I hate being reminded of how slow I read. I read a lot, but I read well below the average. sad
Reading technical books is particularly painful because of this.

410 wpm on that test, but I actually have 2 reading speeds. Book reading speed and work reading speed. I used to consciously slow down when I was reading a book, now I think it's just natural because I don't even think about it anymore. I have to admit, I have no clue if I was reading at work or book speed for that test. Probably something in between since it takes me a bit to settle into a pattern while reading and that page was too short for that to happen.

If you check the settings, you can actually expand the reading selection to get a more accurate view of how many WPM you're reading.

You read 295 words per minute.
That makes you 18% faster than the national average.

uhm.. i just woke up and i got tripped up on what i felt was a grammatical mistake and that stopped me cold and made me reread the sentence very slowly in my head to form it. also my speed increases as i get more focused on reading. (i forget what the pain management term for it is, but i focus in on just the book and block out everything else so i stop feeling pain.) for some reason that speeds my reading up quite a bit. i think because i just start speed reading and i sort of "watch" the book like a movie in my mind. it's hard to explain properly.

On the first one, I got something like 30% faster. It was strangely worded and it took me a couple of seconds to get into the rhythm of the thing.

On the Alice in Wonderland one, I got 198% faster, but I've read those books about 100 times. tongue

I'm not a fast reader by any stretch, but I do read a LOT...hours every day. As I get into the rhythm of the author, and come to know their phrasing as well as how they tend to place the important information in each paragraph...I get much faster. Probably because I'm not actually reading anymore though....more like skimming.

It's a bad habit, I probably need to break it. Though I do notice that with authors I really like (Iain Banks for example), it will take me MUCH longer to read one of their books than some author I don't really care for (Robert Jordan for example). Think I read Winter's Heart (the last book in the series I read until recently) in about 3 hours.

I've read Consider Phlebas 9 or 10 times over the years...and it still takes me days to finish it.

Just expanded the reading selection and now I'm only 6% slower than the national average.

Looking at the scale the world speed reading champion is at 4700 wpm! That's 20 times faster than I read.
