I took it 20 years ago. Got accepted into a fantastic stipended Ph.D. program with only a fair to middling GPA in undergrad coursework. Never did any test prep, or took any sort of Kaplan course but I tend to do rather well on tests of that type. That said, I would recommend a course like the Kaplan one for anyone - how can it not be worth it?

Took it without any prep. Passed. It's pass/fail so it doesn't really matter how well you do.

my impression is that it depends on the program - the guy who would be my thesis advisor suggested the course since the program is pretty competitive for very few slots and the scores can make a big difference when comparing otherwise similar applicants.

i agree that there's not really a good reason not to take the course, it also seems like Kaplan is the group that keeps coming up.

thanks all!

That's not something I considered. I was guaranteed a spot. Taking the test was a formality.

There is a limited correlation between GRE scores and graduate school performance, something on the order of like 0.35 or so, but as noted, it can mean the difference between selecting otherwise similar applicants. It is not pass/fail either. There is a score continuum, I forget what it is myself - again I took the test 20 years ago - and to be honest, the only things I remember about it are that I had a vicious back spasm set in late the night before I was to head out and take the test and rode all the way with the seat reclined with my roommate driving and took the test with a bottle of advil and a massive bottle of gatorade, hoping the anti-inflammatories and electrolytes would loosen my back - and I remember doing well enough that my advisor was impressed and said I would be in good shape and should have no need other than vanity to take the test a second time.

It should be noted that back in the time I was looking into it, all my classmates were taking either the GRE or the MCAT, some both, and Kaplan was the only major player in the prep class game that I was aware of - some of my classmates took the Kaplan course, some didn't. That doesn't mean anything other than just that I've heard of the Kaplan course and not the other one... the other one you mentioned could be just as good or even better, I don't know.

If you are talking about the basic GRE, I took it a long time ago. I'd been out of college for a few years so I went through a Barron's study guide. The test seemed pretty easy to me and iirc I scored in the mid 700s. If you're talking about specific career GREs, I have no experience. If I were you, I would start with a prep book, which will have several previously used tests. If you work through the book and find it really challenging, I would definitely take a prep course as well.
