Subject: Frank Rich has an excellent piece on the Republican party's attitudes towards women
In the NYT magazine.

http://nymag.com/news/frank-rich/gop-women-problem-2012-4/

Quite long but an excellent read on how the party went from George Bush sponsoring the Family Planning Act in 1970 to Gingrich winning in 1978 by attacking his opponent for being female and working.

Frank Rich posted:
The new GOP was hostile to female liberation, period, not just female sexual freedom. The pitch was articulated by Newt Gingrich in his first successful congressional race in Georgia in 1978. His opponent, a state senator named Virginia Shapard, crusaded for the Equal Rights Amendment and bankrolled her own campaign. That uppity profile gave the Gingrich forces an advertising message: “Newt will take his family to Washington and keep them together; Virginia will go to Washington and leave her husband and children in the care of a nanny.” Newt won by nine percentage points. One of his campaign officials tied his victory to the strategy of “appealing to the prejudice against working women, against their not being home.”

Frank Rich is left of center but the article is full of interesting information and he doesn't let his bias get too far in the way of relating that information. It is more than 500 words though so I expect it will be too difficult for most outposters.

That was the period of transition. The point of the article was to chart how the Republicans went from being the pro-woman party to the anti-woman party. Since 1978 they've never really looked back.

Is this the same Frank Rich that was in prison but then Clinton pardoned him?

R's have become the anti-woman party in much the same way D's have become the anti-minority party: by demeaning them and casting them in the perpetual "sit at the little kids table while the adults figure out how to help you" role.

The Republicans put forth a woman on the Presidential ticket. The misogynistic Dems thought about it, and in the end sent Hillary to the back of the bus.
Any Dem that voted for Hillary should be outraged at her treatment by the left's machine.

Women are doing fine despite the failure to pass the equal rights amendment.

So what would have been the point of passing it? Would they be finer?

That wasn't really the point of the article. ERA was just one part of the shift.

In 1970, George Bush got the Family Planning Act passed, providing birth control to millions of women a year (and stopping hundreds of thousands of abortions per year, which should make anyone cheer if they're not a moron). In 1992, Bush was the nominee for a party that deleted the stuff about women being allowed to pursue any career from their party platform and changed it to "homemakers are better" and supported forcing raped women to have their rapists' babies.

women's lib is the worst thing that has happened to this country. Teh mass migration of women tot he workforce has had dire consequences we are still feeling today.

The problem isn't women's lib. The problem was going about it the wrong way. The solution wasn't to make everyone work full time. The solution was to create a society where men and women can both work 30 hours a week instead of one working 60 a week and one not working at all.

P.S. Working class women have always worked. The big shift in women's lib was that middle class women wanted to start working too.

Terrible idea.if there is no pressure to not work and pressure to "achieve" it was a reasonable outcome to assume both parents would work as much as possible or at least as much as "normal. To the detriment of society and family.

Keeping half the (middle class) population out of the workforce "for their own good" wasn't as great as you seem to think it was.

You're just putting around the old lump of labor fallacy.

The problem with the modern family is that people work too long hours, not that women work at all.

France does a lot better than America when it comes to having healthy families. If you want to create a society that has healthy families where both parents have time to spend with their kids you could pick worse places to emulate.

Same old same old. By wanting everyone treated equally we are hurting women. By wanting to save a baby’s life we hate women. By protecting religion we hate women.

Frank is always short on facts and long on EGO and hate. The Democrats are all foaming over the fake war on women. Bumper stickers are being made. A Google search will find pages of rants about the Republican's war on Women.

Fact is this is a political ploy to fire up the women's vote. It is all about Obama getting elected and the hell with facts. The hell with the issues. The hell with Obama failed record. The hell with the fiscal cliff we are rushing towards. We have to line up the troops to fight for the Women.

It seems we all hate our wives, sisters, mothers and aunts. Hate, hate, hate, we must hate the Republicans or they will win the war against Women.

So much for Obama fake call for civility.

You brainless kids are so stupid it makes me wonder how you tie your shoes. Aaa, I see Velcro.

The real war is against men. All facts point to that but men are told to suck it up and go along.

http://godfatherpolitics.com/4265/no-war-on-women-but-war-on-men/

The “war on women rhetoric” is designed to turn women against men so they will vote for the political party that is designed to make them dependent on government. In the end, the casualties in this fictional war are men and women who have their freedoms stripped from them and where the government becomes their new family.

If all you know about healthcare "death panels" is what you heard on a talk show, then you must think the feds will pull the plug on patients.

News bulletin: Texas already has death panels.

A Houston man's life was ended last week.

A leukemia patient identified only as Willie was denied nourishment and died, according to Texas Right to Life.

Since 1999, Texas has given hospital "ethics panels" the authority to end care even if the patient or family wants to continue.

It's called the Texas Futile Care Law. The Texas Senate bill passed in 1999.

Back then, the Senate's presiding officer was Lt. Gov. Rick Perry.

Thanks Yuki, that was a good read. The author does show his bias a bit and took some cheap shots, but if the names and dates are accurate, that is cool info, esp. regarding Bush and co. in the 70s. I'm also interested in his take that the shift occurred before the religious right moved in on the GOP as I had thought that they were responsible for the war.

Subject: Frank Rich has an excellent piece on the Republican party's attitudes towards women
Given Rich's past rants I would not be shocked if we found out sometime in the future that he was on the payroll. Him and the Democrats all seem to march together.

There are three kind of liberals;
Stupid, ignorant or evil
The result is always evil but the intent is not always evil. Not that it makes much difference in the long run.

After the past few election cycles, neither party can claim the moral high ground on Women's Rights.

Yeah his stuff later in the article about the present isn't that interesting. I liked the historical bits though.

And I was also interested about it preceeding the moral majority stuff. I guess his basic point was the GOP hating on empowered women is just like the GOP hating on empowered minorities - it started off mainly as a calculated effort to appeal to white male voters.
