Went to my local GOP county convention yesterday as I was an elected delegate. I stood out because I look younger than everyone and I am brown/hispanic. I get a long great with the party leadership so it wasn't akward or anything. In fact I helped organize in the morning and was one of the persons checking delegates in.
.
Sometimes it makes me wonder though if the majority of the GOP is actually racist against a black leader. I mean Santorum's senate record matches Obama's current policy and Romney even invented american social medicine via government. So it is almost like they are OK with Obama's policies as long as they are administered by a white person. Anyone else feel this way?

I think you get a lot of satisfaction out of being "different".

I also think the "special snowflake" feeling is for suckers and doing hard work without recognition beats feeling special because you got a tattoo of a turd on your face.

But hey, even Mike Tyson isn't a total loser and everyone has a chance at redemption.

I don't mind being different. I have really come to accept being different and there is a lot of peers in the party that give me a lot of respect and admiration for being a republican and also being hispanic. I have even been approached by the leadership to see if I can start a republican hispanic caucus. This post really was just how I didn't understand how republicans can hate Obama so much as this was very apparent at the convention yet they would support Romney and Santorum who are really the same as Obama as far as voting records and policy actions go.

Because those white guys have a (R) on the end. Race may be part of it but it's a tiny part compared to partisanship.

I believe there are a great many "minority" individuals that would show up at conservative and/or Republican/Libertarian function but are truly afraid of the backlash from the extreme folks within their neighborhoods and/or minority group and do not want to put themselves, their families or property at risk.

Why do so many Democrats hate Republicans for having done things they fully support Obama for doing?

It's a mystery.

Keep telling yourself that. I'm sure there is some guy like that somewhere but not many.

Conservatives have spent five decades villifying minorities as welfare leeches (which they started when it became unacceptable to villify them simply for being minorities, like they had before). You can't undo damage like that overnight.

I think it is the perception that blacks and browns are liberal. Even though the foremost intellectual on economics regarding minorities is Walter E. Williams you will never see a liberal media outlet host him since he is conservative and you will never see a "conservative" media outlet host him because his policies are so close to Ron Paul regarding economics.

There is some truth to that.

Democrats voted unanimously against the 14th amendment and almost unanimously against the 15th.

The 19th amendment wasn't very fun for the Dems either. They filibustered and fought against giving women the right to vote.

I am having a hard time finding any civil rights laws that Democrats voted in higher number than Republicans for on the books.

Anyone find any?

It has taken nearly 150 years to get people to forget.

A large part of the GOP might be racist. Seriously America is not the land of white people. America is the land of immigrants and they come from all over the globe. The Republican party needs to enter the 21st century.

He's actually correct. I grew up in the South, I know first hand. Before Reagan (and Clinton) came along everyone in the South was a Democrat. They identified with Democrats mainly because of residual bitterness left over from the Civil War and Reconstruction. Southern Democrats were to the right of Northern Republicans on matters like civil rights, Jim Crow, etc. They were every bit as conservative as we consider modern Conservatives to be today. They're pretty much all Republicans now.

I think the point was more that the identities of the parties have flipflopped over the years. The Democrats used to be the party that got the votes of white people scared of black people. Now the republicans are the party that gets the vote from white people scared of black people.

This is partly why I left the republican party and tell them to lick my sack when they call begging for money.

Of course, you have the same kind of crap going on with the Dems too. "We hate Bush, so we elect Obama, Bush 2.0! Bush sucks but Obama is great because they are so not-different."

What about the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

Was that too far in the past as well?

The House of Representatives passed the bill by 289 to 124, a vote in which 80% of Republicans and 63% of Democrats
voted “yes”.

The Senate vote was 73 to 27, with 21 Democrats and only 6 Republicans voting “no”.

You will have a hard time finding Civil Rights laws on the books that had the Democratic Party voting in a higher percentage than the Republicans.

In fact, I don't think there are any.

i want to say thanks to french-sounding-name-guy for being an active GOP representative.
it is appalling that we have such weak, pathetic candidates.

i considered becoming active too, but shied away from it for the reasons he mentioned.
perhaps, it is time to step up and reclaim the Republican Party. sadly, they will not
be able to recruit when their message is garbled in racist overtones.

you should totally do this - i have a good friend I used to work on the Hill that was approached to do something similar at the local GOP level and very quickly rose up to state politics. you can definitely take the express train if you're willing to be their poster child for an interest group that is traditionally associated with the Democratic party.
