Aside from the original Resident Evil movie they all suck.

I read that they're working on a Bioshock movie. It will suck too.

Mortal Kombat was really good. Tomb Raider wasn't 'good' but it kept me engaged. Prince of Persia was halfway decent as well.

Generally speaking, it is a matter of funding. The ones that had real money behind them were decent films like 95% of the high budget stuff that gets made. Most of them have little money and Uwe Boll directing so you get what you put in to it.

I want to see more high budget game films just because the fanboy rage tickles me pink. Every time somebody throws out a tear filled rant about why Nathan Fillion IS Nathan Drake my day is made.

It's a matter of structure. For the most part games are not structured like movies. Killing hundreds of thousands of monsters keeps you entertained in a video game because it's an interactive experience; you'd get bored very quickly watching Gordon Freeman bludgeon headcrabs in an hour-long cutscene. Writers have to find a way to merge the game into the typical screenplay structure, which more often than not results in a very bland and by-the-numbers adaptation.

Silent Hill turned out O.K., but that's because those games are more about atmosphere and story than gameplay.

Bioshock is one of those games that will probably work out better than a movie than it did as a game. Great setting, environment, atmosphere, freaky enemies, mystery, twists, turns, and very linear.

I found myself wanting to stop playing and just read about the story and ending on Wikipedia than actually riding the linear rails of this game. That should make for a great film.

I thought Bioshock had one of the best first hours of any game I have ever played. After three hours I was so bored I put the game away and never touched it again, but the atmosphere and setting were top notch; I can see a good movie coming out of that if they get the design right.

Resident Evil is the perfect example of why video games shouldn't be made into movies.

Video games = usually thin story.
Little to flesh out into 90min script unless you change a few things.
And then gamers are gonna whine!!

Bioshock has a pretty cool story, and a very unique atmosphere that might translate into a movie better. They also delivered a lot of the storylines through the landscapes and scenery.

It could work as a movie... although generally video game moves suck.

What really gets me is a movie made from a boardgame - Battleship, anyone?

That's the problem. Most games have a paper thin plot, just enough to give you a reason to shoot demons back into hell or defeat some gods. Call of Duty or Medal of Honor, if adapted into a film, would essentially be yet another war film, despite some interesting plot twists in them (although I'd love to see the aftermath of a character dying of radiation poisoning crawling around after somehow surviving a nuclear blast).

The ones that have plot, such as RPG's, often end up having too much stuff to try and cram into a 2 and a half hour film. As a result, a lot of stuff gets cut and it looks kind of cobbled together at the last minute type. If they could be released as a couple of films, or a tv series, then it would work better...maybe...

I think it'd be awesome if a movie and game explored different parts of the same universe. For example, it'd be interesting to see what Luke Skywalker did in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back (Rogue Squadron 3 did sort of try to do this, but it was lame, needed more X-wing action, less on foot stuff).

Or, something I just made up: Have character A in the movie mention something that took place offscreen, such as trying to evacuate civilians from a doomed city, then have character B chew him out for making that decision. Character A has some flashbacks to it, and vows never to let it happen again in the film...

Then in the game, you'd get to take part in that evacuation. No matter how well you try to defend the city, it's going to be overrun. And then you find out that there aren't enough transports to take everyone away to safety, either because several of them got shot down by the enemy, or the higher ups felt that instead of sending the 10 ships you'd need, they felt 4 was already more than enough for this lowlife town. And you end up abandoning over half of the civilians, including the kid sister of character B in the movie. And the kid sister won't let you stay behind, because she knows that if you die here, the war will take a turn for the worse (also, the movie kind of hits a snag without the main character). She gives you a necklace to give to Character B, so that B knows what the sister's fate was...

Which in turn ties into B's rescue of A later in the film after A is stuck in a bad situation and surrounded by bad guys, and tells A that he's not getting off that easily, and still has to make up for leaving the kid sister behind.

Hmm, maybe I should be putting this into a screenplay... thinking

Yup, when you get to the part of the game where that crazy guy locked himself behind the door and sets you on that inane task to get that camera and several other MacGuffins before he'll open it, I basically put the game down permanently. When you're playing a very linear game, the last thing you want to do is go backtrack for an hour plus before finally being able to move forward again.

The third BioShock looks amazing though.
