Nirvana was 'alright'

There's been good bands, and better ones, since them I think

And now I even think Pearl Jam is better because Pearl Jam has a real message in some of their music

There was a crazy genius in Nirvana which vanished when Kurt died. Reminds me of the Doors.

Some times madness has a great outlet which is art. Thankfully there are plenty of crazy artists

The '80s were an odd time for culture and style. The music was good though. Concerts were cheap and band came by every weekend. I must have went to over 200 shows total.

There was plenty after Nirvana. Maybe it just wasn't in your radar.

Dream Theater and In Flames released their first EP and Opeth released their first album in '95.
Alice in Chains did an Unplugged in '96, Katatonia and Iced Earth were coming around.
Nightwish and Children of Bodom in '97, along with a Black Sabbath reunion tour.

I could go on and on....

Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands of the 90's... If Cobain hadn't killed himself they wouldn't be even a quarter as revered as they are today. There are plenty of bands in the genre far better than Nirvana.

Nirvana kind of changed the scene for a lot of potential up and coming acts though... they might not have been the ENTIRE driving force behind it but they were the most famous ones at the forefront of changing from what was "traditional" pop/rock music to grunge (which then became the new pop).

I also agree that if Cobain hadn't killed himself, the band would be nowhere near as revered as they are today.

I kind of wonder how history would have viewed the Doors or even Janis Joplin if they'd all lived through the 70s too...

I was born in 1970 btw.

I was having a conversation about this a couple months ago with a friend of mine. I can't remember which band he was telling me about but it was a band that was just starting to get the ball rolling as a pop/classic rock type of band when Nirvana and the whole Grunge deal REALLY hit the scene. One day this band was like "Yeah, we're going to make it... we're going to hit the big time!" the next day they were basically dropped by their label because grunge was what was hot, and they weren't it... and they were like "Hey... uh... um... wut... happened... uh... hello... guys?"

Nirvana changed the game forever. They put big-hair-rock out to pasture (thankfully), and created an anthem for a generation.

Grunge died by the end of the 90s lol. The "anthem" and the "generation" it spoke to have become more of an example of a passing fad than anything else...

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the only reason Nirvana and the "anthem" are even a part of the "public consciousness" 20 years later is that the folks whose "generation" Nirvana's anthem spoke to are now the people editing Rolling Stone, Spin, and all the other industry publications.
