Will the connectivity between mp3 player and the amp have much of an effect on the sound quality?

That is, if I'm going to use an ipod or an iphone to push mp3's through a good amp and speakers, should I do something different than just connect the headphone jack to the aux input of the amp?

Something about using that output of the mp3 player makes me suspicious.

Thoughts?

a line out would be better than a headphone output

get an ipod/phone dock that has a line out

the compression hurts mp3's bad.

you only notice it though when played through a high quality sound system.

like my jeep came infinity gold system installed, and when I crank a mp3 up to a volume you can hear it.

Sith is talking about the recording quality of the file, not the connection. Line level is always better that speaker level. And if you use a low voltage line level you make up for it on the gain of the amplifier. I seriously doubt you will get a 4 volt signal from line level on an MP3.

My understanding is that you can buy a $10 adapter to take the audio signal from the iPhone/iPad/iPod's main line out instead of the headphone out. Then you need to switch to a better data source than mp3s. I have no idea where you get loss-less audio files...

This

And mp3s are not great for amplified quality. I use flac but I think apple is aiff. If you have the CDs you can probably rip the music as aiff with iTunes. Can't help with iTunes though.
