on job applications for just part time work. Something reasonable that the employers will be unlikely to say no to. $11? $12? Too presumptuous?

That would be super awesome and all, but how about something realistic for a part time student with minimal experience or credentials.

Depends where you live really. Min wage is Washington is nearing $10 so it would be different.

you can ask for what ever but the employerer is not going to pay more than market rate.

especially with the labor pool available right now and people taking whatever they can get at what ever pay rate.

In Chicago right? What type of job?

You probably want to put between 9-10 for most.

Somewhere around 1400 dollars per month in 10 dollar bills delivered in a manila envelope under the driver side wiper blade of your car.

What type of work? Here Fast Food is $7.35/hr. If you are doing something that requires a bit more experience or skill then $8.00.
Housekeepers make $8 - $9/hr. I saw a posting for a delivery driver = $10/hr.

Something that uses computers probably $10 - $11/hr.

The wages down here are pretty low. Walmart is one of the highest paying employers for non-professional postings (here).

I'm getting paid $9 now, but I didn't know if that was too low on average. I could try asking for $10, but I guess $11 or $12 are unrealistic numbers to ask for? The other problem is that I'm not getting as many hours I want either. I'd like between 18-23 hours per week steadily but right now my hours are far from steady.

See, I know what I want but I don't know if it's okay to ask for these things or if they'll just laugh me right out of the building.

I've always put down "Negotiable", then the employer will let you know if there is any room to move from their set amount.

Have you improved your skill set or acquired any certificates or degrees since you started/last given a raise? Asking for a $2 raise without gaining any kind of value yourself will probably go over like a lead balloon. When is your next review? Does your position get scheduled raises?

being part time is going to hurt you.

I don't want to ask a raise from my current company, I want to just start leaving resumes around other places to see if I can find a better offer elsewhere. This may sound dumb to most people here, but I believe I'm better than $9/hr. I'm very serious, dependable, an eager learner, adaptable, I'm never late and I never miss a shift. I'm awesome god damn it, awesome enough for $11/hr.

*shrug* does that sound whiny and entitled?

thing with low paying hourly jobs is most times hiring mangers arent looking for quality. they say they are but its a load of crap.
they try to fill the position with a warm body at the lowest possible price.

If you are just leaving resumes around, you don't need to say how much you want, that isn't something you put on a resume.

If you don't have a degree or relevant experience doing whatever you're doing, you pretty much take what they offer.

You might find a job paying 10-11 hourly, but you won't convince someone running a grocery store to pay you that to be a cashier or something when they can train someone off the street to do it for minimum wage.

Right, but it's a set pay. You can ask for $20/hr or whatever you want and they'll hire you at the same rate they hire everyone else, because that's what they're paying cashiers.

I hated the union when I was a cashier because you got hardly any benefits from it other than a 1k life insurance policy and a review process before you could be let go for any reason, but you had to pay dues out of your $9.50/hr regardless of whether you wanted to join or not.

I'm not just a cashier though, I'm adaptable. I can cashier, or I can answer phones or lug boxes or deal with customers or do stuff on the computer. I'm a reasonably smart product of the American educational system, If I can't do something, then I can learn quickly given some training.

Cashiers have always made more than that here, I think they start at $11 and move up quickly.

Eh, it was Chicago about 10 years ago. Small little grocery store. Minimum wage was 6.25 or 6.50? at the time I think.

Edit: Anyway, the point is that they, along with a lot of other unskilled labor/entry-level jobs generally offer a set base pay or set range based on how much experience you have.

doesn't really matter what you CAN do, it's what you've BEEN doing that matters. You can tell a prospective employer until you're blue in the face that you can use Microsoft Word, but until you've had a JOB using Microsoft Word, they really don't count it as a skill.

If you want higher wages now, and working part-time you might want to look into call center work, Customer Service is something you've been doing (nearly everyone does in one way or another) and you can translate that into experience that will get you a Call Center job making more money.

It's pretty static as far as advancements go though, you're stuck in a call center, and the only "up" is through management of the call center, or quality control and training.

Um getting paid $9.50 an hour 10 years ago sounds like a pretty nice union benefit wink

it REALLY depends on the location, $9.50 an hour here, even ten years ago, was entry level.
