I figured I'd buy an e-book reader since well it's obviously superior to books and less heavy to lug around lets not forget that I can also get college books for it and not have to lug those around either.

now which do you guys recommend?

In general Color-Nook. However with an unlimited budget and the extensive 'college use' you should be expecting - iPad.

If you want it purely for reading books and such, one of the e-ink models is probably best such as the Kindle (aside from the Kindle Fire). grin

I've only used the Kindle Wi-fi model, and I only use it for reading. The e-ink looks fantastic and the Kindle itself feels sturdy but lightweight. It's restricted to .mobi format only but most places, like Project Gutenberg, offer Kindle versions so it's not a big deal. If you're stuck with an .epub you can use calibre to convert it to .mobi.

They are all pretty analogous at this point. Every time one of the companies comes up with a good idea the other companies all steal it in the next version so buy whichever is the most aesthetically pleasing to you.

Personally I prefer the Nook and respect B&N more than Amazon mostly because Amazon is the king of the hill when it comes to stealing other ideas for your next version; each new Kindle looks like a reskinned version of something somebody else just released.

If you want something larger with more bells and whistles the Sony Daily Edition is pretty nice. If you want something small, thin and to the point the Nook Simple Touch or the Amazon ripoff are my personal favorites.

Nook works well. Amazon's works well. You need to balance need and price. Then go after the best table that fits it. I have a Zoom right now and would love to afford and Apple. That said I like getting books from any vender on my Zoom. I think you are restricted with Apple. I could be wrong but Apple does not have the name iShakle for nothing.

I have the $79 Kindle. Works perfectly fine. Battery lasts forever and it slips into a pocket.

I recommend getting something that isn't back-lit. I have a Kindle, I like it.

He will be going back to school soon and mentioned college text books.

I have a feeling he will be more than just reading in bed. The added functionality of an iPad would rival a laptop in a college environment. Killing more than a handful of birds with just a single stone. And as we all know - cost isn't an issue for mr euro trust fund.

I've thought about it.. I bought a new stationary gaming PC last month that will hold me over until I finish school, I'm also buying a gaming laptop for the lectures, LAN parties etc.. I'm actually pondering buying a Ipad 3 instead of getting a laptop and a e-book reader.

But I just know that 6 or 9 months from now I'm going to start hating that Ipad with abandon!

anyone know if the samsung pads are any good? They seem to have more memory space etc..

Any of the E-Ink ones (not color). Kindle, Nook, or whatever.

Calibre converts file formats nicely, so that isn't a factor.

All of them have excellent battery life and great readability.

I've tried the touchscreen Kindle and Nook, I prefer the physical buttons on mine. With the touch screen I got a lot of inadvertent page turns and menu popups just from holding it wrong. Shift your grip and your page goes away.

And don't worry about the ads on the Kindle. You only see them when it's not in use, and it's in the case then..

Kindle seems to be the way to go.. I'm still pondering a samsung pad or ipad3 instead..

If you go for a Kindle get the one without ads. It might not be intrusive now but just you wait. I remember some iPhone apps I downloaded when I first got the phone were completely ad free, like The Weather Channel and New York Times. They had updates where the only thing added were advertisements.

One of these days it'll be:
/turn page
/30 second advertisement video

This is my opinion

If you are rich like Mammogram get the Ipod. If you are an average person like me get a Kindle Fire, which cant do it all as good but is still damn good. I would get it primarily as a reader but enjoy the added benefits

If I had an iPad I'd never read books on it. I'd sit in bed and browse the Internet.

That's why I stayed away from an iPad for my eReader.

I like the fact that I can surf on my color nook - but it's pretty clumsy and I'd only do it in a pinch.

buy an hp touchpad....there is probably still new ones floating around on ebay and stuff

they are virtually impossible to brick...large screen....webos is fully becoming openware....they are as impressive as any tablet on the market with the exception of app catalog...

but most importantly for your needs...they are a fantastic book reader with the free already loaded kindle app

My issues with Apple keeps me from giving them anymore of my money.. I like their tech but hate their software, it's like retarded chimps smashed it together with crude stone tools, customization is impossible and problem solving is even worse.

My main goal is just to have a paper free experience in college and that means having to suffer through some kind of pad probably, and a HD webcam to film the lectures.

Get psp and load it with custom firmware and bookr. You can then put anything you want on it and have a full fledged ebook reader that will fit in your pocket. I've read well over 100 books on my psp.

Drains the battery a LOT faster. Glare is a bit harder on the eyes. Of course, neither are problems if you'll only be using it a couple hours a day.

Back-lit is like reading on your monitor.

E-ink (using room light) doesn't have the eyestrain issues. Read more than a few minutes and the difference is huge.

Get 10 hours on a battery charge for a psp with a regular battery. Even more with the extended life ones for reading. Never really had eye strain with it, but glare can be an issue sometimes with sunlight. Maybe I'm the only one that likes a utility device that can do multiple things.
