Looking at possibly getting a tablet for school and over all just kinda want one. as of this spring which one seems to be the best choice? I see that the Ipad has a new version out and i have no experience with any of the droids.

thanks.

I can recommend the iPad over most of the other tablets. Personally, I'd just grab the wireless instead of the 4G/3G one. If you are looking to save a few bucks, grab an iPad 2 - their price dropped 100 each.

I was told that because of their inability to use Flash, they are not all that great for college students. How big of a deal is this or is it even true?

Argh, every time I try to reply to this, I end up typing mountains of rambling text that nobody probably wants to read anyway...

If you were buying right now, I'd say either the iPad 3rd Gen or the ASUS Transformer Prime, depending on your needs and desires.

iPad 3rd Gen and iOS
+ Lots of tablet apps, gets more developer attention.
+ Retina display is amazing, small browser text is very readable.
+ Very powerful GPU, pretty impressive gaming abilities.
+ Very easy to backup.
- No Flash support (kinda a minor issue these days, but could be big for some people still).
- Can't drag and drop files, need to use iTunes.
- Limited ability to customize the OS appearance.

ASUS Transformer Prime and Android
+ 32GB plus micro SD, more storage for the same price as a 16GB iPad.
+ Can connect to any computer and drag and drop files.
+ Android OS is very customizable with third party launchers and widgets.
+ Multiple app markets and ability to install apps from anywhere (competition leads to good app prices).
+ Flash support.
- Not easy to backup.
- Less developer attention, but still there is a plethora of apps.
- Fragmentation, sometimes things just don't work like they should.
- 1280x800 resolution display, good for Android, not as good as the new iPad.

It's an inbetween period for Android. The wave of Android 3 tablets has mostly died down and we are waiting for the arrival of the Android 4.0 tablets. The Transformer Prime got a huge head start. We'll be seeing more Android 4.0 tablets soon, and more exciting are the tablets with the 1920x1200 resolution displays.

If your needs aren't immediate and you find Android more appealing. Might try waiting for the ASUS Transformer Prime Infinity or ACER A700.

PS. One warning about the Transformer Prime is that a design flaw resulted is reduced wifi range. It may still be good enough depending on your router and location. This problem is fixed with the upcoming Transformer Prime Infinity.

The iPad 3 is pretty easy to recommend right now because I'm just not impressed with any current Android tablet.

But hopefully with ASUS launched the Transformer Infinity and it's 1920x1200 display things will get more interesting for Android fans. Of course ASUS kinda dropped the ball on the Transformer Prime, but I think lessons were learned and this time it should be better. So I expect the Transformer Infinity will be an easy recommendation for someone that doesn't necessarily like the iPad or iOS or needs Flash.

PS. I think the Infinity is coming in Q2, so before June hopefully.

There are web browsers that will render websites remotely, convert the flash, then stream it to your iPad, like Skyfire. Been about a year since I last tried it and it was kinda slow and clunky and didn't work for some things.

Onlive might be better, as it lets you run a virtual Windows desktop on your iPad and I would imagine should let you run Flash through it's IE browser. I'll give it a try today and see how that works.

Just tried out the Onlive Desktop. Unfortunately the free version doesn't give internet access on your virtual desktop. You'd have to upgrade to the $5 a month plan for that. I gave that a try. For $5 a month you get gigabit accelerated browsing through IE with Flash support.

It's nice if you need a very very restricted virtual desktop. Unfortunately Flash kinda blows with it. There was a lot of flickering and check board patterns on some pages that had flash elements. I played a few Flash videos and the audio was noticeably out of sync (guess that's to be expected). I'm going to cancel that subscription.

Skyfire costs $5, I'm not even going to bother with that.

If you have to have Flash, I don't think you'll find a satisfying solution on iPad.

And if you can't afford it, settle for a Kindle Fire, but it is indeed settling.
