Do you give the characters a distinct voice in your head or is it just your voice you read in?

My husband only reads in his own voice, but I make up distinct voices for people, so I was curious what other people do.

I give each character a different voice and in some cases, an accent as well.

This. It depends on how they make the choices in the beginning that determines what kind of voice I hear in my head when reading the rest of the book.

In many cases how can you know what voice is being spoken until the end of the character's line? Until then, what voice does the character have, and is it awkward if a man's voice suddenly changes to a woman's with "she said"? How do you explain the gender changes to yourself to prevent a break of immersion?

These are the questions I want to know. Being as most repliers have claimed to give voices and accents to each character at an expert level, answering my questions should be no problem. I have many more, but I'll start with these.

Most of the time I know who is speaking and can assign the voice accordingly. Once in a while, it takes a sentence or two to figure it out and I usually have to go back and read it again in the right voice.

No voices, I normally just see the words in my head and there is no vocalization of any kind.

Occasionally I will imagine how a conversation in a book would look with the characters hanging around, and then I might vocalize it in my head, but I think it's just my own voice as if I was reading it out loud.

Normally, this, unless the book has been made into a tv series/movie, like Game of Thrones. Upon re-reading it after the HBO series, I now hear the actors' voices.

most of the time, I don't give the characters particular voices, but if it's a kids' book or if the character has a distinct way of speaking (Hagrid from the Harry Potter books or Jim from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn come to mind), then I'll go ahead and give them a voice that sounds appropriate, in my head.

Oh yeah, different voices in my head with different accents. You lose much of the nuance if you monodrone it in your own head.

I used to wonder if I dreamed in color and finally after about a year I dreamed I was flying a Budweiser biplane. It was painted like a Budweiser can. That's the only way I knew I was dreaming on color. So it does happen, just not a lot INMHO.

I do give them distinct voices, for the most part. The more important a character, at least.
If the character is just a hanger-on, on the periphery of the story probably not very distinct.
I visualize most characters fairly distinctly. I really like a for my mind to paint a mental picture, if the book is descriptive enough.

I'm reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen right now (book one, "Gardens of the Moon") and there are so many characters, but they're all pretty distinct.

Exactly how it works with me too. I haven't had to "hear" words since I was probably in first grade to read something.

Oh adding on, if I read something to the kids, of course every character has to have a different voice.

Interesting that it's a mix and not down gender lines, either.

It's super easy to give voices to characters you've seen on TV or in a movie. I hate when I create a voice for a book and it gets made into a show or movie and the voice is completely wrong to me.

Hard to explain. I don't really see it like that. As I am reading I visualize the event/situation in my head. So it is more a jumble of things happening than like reading a screen play where everything is laid out in precise steps. As for voices, I guess kinda but it isn't really something I focus on.

It's not like a screenplay for me. I visualize everything happening in the story if the writer is good at his/her craft. If I can't visualize something, I have a hard time reading it. It's like creating a movie in my head. My dreams are like that, too....vivid and lifelike.

Subject: When you read a book...
Reading a book plays out in my mind just like watching a movie, I visualize scenes, hear characters in their own voice. That's with a novel.

With a series, it gets even more fun. When you really get to know the characters, how they would sound and react to events. Of course, each one would have his/her own voice. And as was brought up already, this is one of the things that can make movies a tough thing. When you internalize so much from a book, movies made by someone who had a different take or vision will be hard to take in.

I visualize how the characters look, but don't think I've ever given them any distinct voices.

Does it break immersion at all? I expect it would take a bit of skill to go back yet retain immersion in the story through it. And of course you'd have to immediately discard the previous reading. At the same time, I think having read it before would enhance the experience of reading it in a character's voice. Do you think so?

Honest I didn't expect anyone to answer this. But you're quite the spirit on these boards, apparently unaffected by the troll-standard culture that has swept over the internet. Impressive.

Sometimes it will break the immersion of the story for me, but it's only for a second. Because of the way I visualize things when I read, it's almost like having to rewind, re-block the characters, and start the action again (as if it were live TV or something). I think what generally happens is if I can't figure out who is speaking in the first half a dozen words, I will scan a bit further to see what name appears, so I haven't really read too far into the dialogue.

As far as the trolling, if it's something I still want to discuss, I will reply as I'd like. If I ignored every attempt at trolling, my post count would be a lot smaller. wink

uh.. i probably do w/o realizing it. i mean i don't think i do but i read in a way that plays it as a movie in my head so i'm sure they eventually have their own voices and what have you. if i were to read out loud, i would not do a special voice for anyone.

I experience this as well in some ways. What breaks immersion for me is if I lose the trail of where I was in the story or dialogue, (who was talking and so on). I also do go back and re-read parts in order to maintain the flow and understanding that got the story this far.

I wouldn't even allow myself to be in a position where I have to read anything out loud in front of people. I would disappear.

I've always loved reading aloud and will do so at the drop of a hat. I don't do different voices for anyone but family, though. I'd die of embarrassment.
