Atlas Shrugged Part 1.

I get it - message loud and clear, I support the message 100%.

But that was the worst writing I have ever experienced. At first I couldn't tell if the acting just sucked or if it was the writing. But no - it's the writing, the writing sucked so bad it interfered with the actors abilities.

Well that's "Atlas Shrugged" (the novel) in a nutshell for you, given the topic couldn't be any other way really.
I give it 1.5 libertarian fapfaps out of 5.

peace

I consider her writing to be pretty bad. I wonder if its a lost in translation effect. The world has changed so much since she used up that killer title for a drab book about a "no sht" topic. If we had read her book back then it might have been different. Our generation is a lot more advanced.

I might concede that Atlas Shrugged earned a strong Silver Medal in that category..

Conservative blogs were pushing this movie. Previews looked boring

To be fair, it must be really hard to make a dumb ideology into a good movie.

See I don't think it's the ideology...

I think we can all agree that state corruption which is highlighted in the movie is a bad thing.
I think we can all agree that governments colluding with business and business colluding with governments is a bad thing.
I think we can all agree that some people simply get more done than others.

It must be a translation issue regarding the time it was originally written and the language it was written in. They should have brought in talented writers and updated and modernized the story line.

I think it is rather obvious that government needs to work with corporations and business in general. Especially with regard to things like infrastructure, education, trade relations, etc.

Is this in contrast to what I stated?

If it is, Then I don't think you have read the book, seen the movie, are talking about the same thing I am talking about.

To your point - yes, Government should work with corporations for some things instead of trying to do them whole cloth themselves. That seems to be rather obvious...

The government can do a lot by themselves and in many cases turning to private business results in inefficiencies or complete failure of a project or program.

Ah ok - just being generally argumentative.

The fact is that people are scared of corporations, fascism, and communism to the point that when governments and corporations are mentioned together people freak out. Meanwhile every modern economy relies very much on government and corporations working together. Because of the general unpopularity of this it isn't talked about much or advertised. So the relationship becomes a secret and hidden from view. This in turn makes things worse because corruption tends to breed in this scenarios.

The fear of government and corporations working together actually makes things worse.

Atlas Shrugged is ironic in that it gets the importance of people owning their own labor but completely fails to understand what such a world would be like to the point of absurdity.

Working together is not the same as being in bed together. It's the latter that people fear. And I'm not even sure working too closely together is a good idea if it means they're almost one and the same. People should not be ruled by large multinationals.

You don't want your sheepdog and the wolf getting too friendly - remember that dogs like meat, too. wink It is very easy to fall into corruption and very difficult to clean it out once it's ingrained into the way of doing things. I think we're past that point actually.

I did not see Atlas Shrugged and have no desire to, but I did see John Carter yesterday. I was actually expecting a lot worse.

There are billions of dollars to be made off of government decisions even when corruption is not involved. The primary purpose of government working with corporations is economic growth and in a capitalist system it is very likely a small group of people will benefit greatly.

That doesn't mean it is a wrong decision.

For example the laissez faire approach to the Keystone pipeline is guaranteed to benefit certain business owners. A lot of money is on the line for some people with that deal.

Of course it's a horrible movie. It's a horrible book, easily one of the worst "popular" books of the 20th century. Even if you agree with it's cartoonish portrayal of good and evil and agree with every stupid thing the idiot author ever said, you can't actually claim to have enjoyed reading it. It's world record awful.

Now, factor that in with the fact that the movie was made, not to enjoy, but to push the idiotic ideas of the stupid book...and you end up with a train wreck. A 2 hour long propaganda pieced based upon the febrile mewlings of a delusional nut case.

Not exactly a recipe for entertainment.
