Every year. They're coming up soon, and I dread them. My job is pretty mindless and boring. Every year they ask for goals. I'm tempted to put "To make it through another year" on it this year. How many goals can a glorified secretary have, anyway? It's not like I can take schooling to make me be a better secretary, after all. I know all the programs I'm required to know. In fact, I'm the go-to person when anyone in the office has questions, including my boss!

Meh.

That made me laugh happy

I work a second job and in all the years I have been working, I have never been asked to fill out a self evaluation.

I thought it was really sort of cool. I was told that my two immediate supervisors and my principal will be filling it out as well. Then we will discuss happy

Yep. At our yearly reviews, we have to answer all the review questions ourselves, and our boss answers them separately, and then we get together and compare. I've only done it once so far but it was definitely interesting. There weren't many points where my boss and I differed, which is a good thing I suppose haha.

Yeah, I used to hate those things.

I figured out after the first year that they expected you to intentionally downgrade yourself to average unless you were cleaning the bathroom with your personal toothbrush on your time off with a smile on your face, so I just always ranked myself 3 out of 5 on everything, made up some stuff to improve, and was pleasantly surprised if they ranked me higher on the different categories.

Twice a year. It's an electronic process where you input your goals and submit them to your manager who approves them based on his goals. Then you come up with a measurable process to report on the completion of your goals. At eval time, you do your self assessment with ranking and electronically submit those to your manager. Your manager adds his comments and ranking, sends you the results and then you both schedule a meeting to discuss them.

It's a pain in the butt but if you don't do your assessments, you don't get a pay raise.

Intel mandates that everyone do self-evaluations every year before the end-of-year focal process. The silly thing is that for 9 months of the year you better be a team player and everything you do has to be for the good of the team, but for 3 months at the end of they you list only the things that you personally did to better the company, such as saved xx dollars by using less chemical, introduced a new procedure saving xx hours of production, etc. No one likes doing them, but we have to submit our IPS (individual performance summary) to our direct manager and then discuss all the items we listed.

Once a month. I just go to the mens room and do it myself. It should feel rubbery and supple but if you find that is too hard or feel the slightest of pain or uneasiness, report it to your physician.

Since 1996, all my evaluations were part 'SELF EVAL' compared with my actual evaluation.

And usually done by managers, from a separate shift that never see me work.

If you ever wanted to check the disparity between how well your employee thinks they are doing compared to how well you think they are, this is certainly one way to do it.

Not saying I support the idea of self-evals (I don't) but it is easy enough to understand why some would.

are you a sexy secretary? if you are you should put down "have an affair with the boss" as one of your goals. All hot secretaries do it, that's how they get the good raises.

Frequently and I always rate myself as maximum on everything because I have enough insight into my behavior to determine my strengths and weaknesses and if my supervisor is too lazy/dumb/scared to either identify them or point them out to me then they don't really care if I'm a productive worker and don't deserve the privilege of hearing my true opinion of myself.

Yeah after I made E-5 in the navy I had to write my own evals and give them to the shop LPO. Then he would cut on them or add to them.

It was his way of teaching us E-5's how to write evals because eventually e-5's become e-6's and then its a skill you had to learn if you ever wanted to be a e-6.

What I said aside, to me this is one of the only legitimate reasons to do something like self-evaluations.

That's what I do when we had them. If they are going to make me do their job, I am giving myself top marks on everything. If they have a problem with that, they can actually do their job and try to find out where I was in error.

Yes, and most of the time they won't have any problem. If you are actually qualified to do a job, you really should mark yourself well for jobs you have done successfully. Without a doubt that is your best choice for the future, period. Never doubt yourself unless you know you've never learned of or been trained for the job you're doing. Then and only then can you doubt your confidence level.

Incompetent idiot bosses being the wildcard. Do what it takes to get over them, because idiots aren't long for any successful business. Good workers fall, but excellent workers always have a play if they have the confidence to. Play it right and see yourself rise over your boss.

I do a mid-year then end of year, our bonuses are based on them. They have no real value and most employees never think twice about them except when we have to them. My boss (god bless her) does most of the verbiage for us. We just have to track our assignments.

Evals are just an HR item that's keeps them (HR) in business. Once you're hired there isn't much for them to do on a daily basis except dream up ways to look busy.

Subject: Self-Evaluations at Work...ever had to do one?
I voluntarily do a 360 evaluation every 5 years. Basically I rate myself and my supervisor, colleagues, and counterparts also rate me. The scores are compared. It gives you some insight and often encouragement. I consistently rate myself lower than others rate me. This helps me move past self-doubt.

Before I retired and began sleeping-in every day, I had a job that required me to complete a self-evaluation form every year. As it turned out, apparently I was the best damn employee the county ever had. I got five stars in every catagory, every year, each catagory accompanied by such phrases as "Prunesquallor's devotion to his job is exceeded only by the excellence of his work," and "though deeply humble, Prunesquallor stands head and shoulders above his co-workers in matters of integrity, honesty, and, in fact, in all fields of human endeavor."

Once, a co-worker read one of my self-evaluations and subsequently wanted me to evaluate him in like manner. What I did was, I turned in a written evalutation of him which stated simply, "He often shows up at work." Afterwards he seemed less than grateful, even though I gave him a star.

Ingrate.

Meh.

are you a sexy secretary? if you are you should put down "have an affair with the boss" as one of your goals. All hot secretaries do it, that's how they get the good raises.

*shudder* You haven't met my boss. No raise is worth that...

As for moving forward at all, there is nowhere that's "up" from my position. I could make lateral moves, if someone left, but it won't actually earn me any more money. It's the downside of being employed by a small private school. If I could decide what I want to be when I grow up, I'd start taking classes...
