Teachers in George uses slavery to teach kids math!
|
Another Georgia school has come under fire for a slavery-related incident. On this occasion, a fourth-grade teacher gave students a math problem that read "A plantation owner had 100 slaves. If three-fifths of them are counted for representation, how many slaves will be counted?" A school spokesman said the teacher would not be punished because the question was "meant to educate students on both social studies and math." oops edit for missing link http://now.msn.com/now/0322-slavery-math-problem.aspx

I see no problems in using slavery or say watermelons.. Just don't combine them because it will make for an impossible equation.

I'd be more surprised if the kids can actually answer the question.

Three lessons in one - seems like a win win win. Good on the school and teacher.

And in a different incident some 8th grade teacher recently assigned her class the task of finding the stupid in all the repub candidates. Conclusion: Many teachers are over reaching douchebags bringing their left/right agenda into the classroom.

I agree, that exercise is way to easy for a 8th grader..

If this was in fact IN a social studies class, and the discussion thereafter started getting into how that was un-done via amendment, when, and how? I've got zero problem with this. In a math class... yeah... this has no context or place.

4th graders typically don't have social studies.

I did, and that was 30-ish years ago. And in my travels around the country I was going to a freakin ALABAMA school that year. Not exactly "top of the heap". We've gone so far backwards that we don't have any American history, state history, or history-integrated social studies at all in most Elementary schools?

It's stupid. In math it works to have problems that make students more interested in solving them, for instance sports like shooting percentages or something or probabilities of kicking 50 yard field goals. Unless the class is full of little Blue Arrows kids, it is totally inappropriate to have a problem that could potentially offend a large percentage students/families.

Umm, no? Your anecdote, while very cute, really has no bearing on the discussion. I didn't say "All schools don't have Social Studies", I said "most". I have no hard facts to back it up, but I'd wager most didn't 30 years ago, either. Social Studies as a separate course typically begins at 6th or 7th grade, depending whether or not the class is using a middle school or jr. high model. That's not to say that teachers don't teach social studies in the 4th grade. Some of the more clever ones mix it in with other topics. Like math, for instance.
