Great discussions with my co-workers this morning. The viruses affecting bees, sonar affecting whales and dolphins, evolution, super volcanos, ghosts and then bam - GW. All of a sudden I have to bite my tongue. It's sad that a scientific theory has taken on almost religious connotations. "Huge drought in X-place. Global warming." Bite my tongue. "Look how hot it is right now. Early spring. Global warming." Bite my tongue. "Look at the huge amount of storms we've had compared to the past. Global Warming." Bite my tongue. Nothing they mention is outside the norm but anything they see - global warming.

MMGW is real. Just what effects it is having and what, if anything, should be done about is debatable. Your co-workers are probably being dumb by assigning everything outside the norm to MMGW.

You should tell your co-workers hard proof is now showing a specific family of pesticides are the likely culprit in the bee problem. A group in Italy matched the use of a specific and widely used pesticide to the beginning of EUs appearance of colony collapse. It is a used on corn. EU approved it or use in 98-99 and not long after the colony collapse syndrome started to show up. http://tinyurl.com/72l9vy3

This. Unfortunately the debate is entirely dominated by people who on one side who are in complete denial and people on the other side who think we're about 6 months away from living in Waterworld.

everythign on the planet has an effect on the climate the butterfly in the sahara flaps its wings and causes a tsunami in japan.... should we outlaw butterflies? make them stop flapping their wings? i know we can corral them into less harmfull areas of the globe where their wing flaps will be less devestating. how bout we aim them at the arizona desert and see if we cant blow some rainfall in there? i wonder what the effect of rainfall in the arizona desert would have on the icebergs in canada? maybe we should move the arizona desert to somewhere where it has less impact on the iceburgs in canada....

sure is possible. im not going to pretend to be able to disprove it, but youre more than welcome to make an effort to prove it one way or the other. im sure you can compile a series of graphs from various links on the internet that will uphold your argument, though

heres a little history lesson for you slower folks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect its more valid science than your MMGW religion and if any of you think they can predict the weather more than 30 minutes into the future, then you need to come to chicago for a couple days.

and im not surprised you cant apply the theory to the topic at hand. scaling is a major discipline of chaos math. what works on a micro scale also holds true for the macro scale. a thousand butterflies flyign in the sahara can affect long term weather patterns (read: climate) in chile. its the minutia of possibilities that present themselves as able to effect the climate and you morons want to claim that man is responsible for everything. we are but a lowly player on a grand field that none of you are capable of understanding in the ways which you claim to. everything on the face of this planet effects the climate. change one variable and you throw the whole system out of whack, ie; move the butterflies and northern scotland starts growing bananas but the glaciers in canada will probably survive.

Butterflies in the desert? Anyway, on topic, that's chaos theory. Also, tsunamis are a weather event, not part of climate (climate is long-term averages of temperature, air pressure, precipitation, etc. in an area). Just saying. [Edit:]Just saw this:sweeny_comodore posted: a thousand butterflies flyign in the sahara can affect long term weather patterns (read: climate) in chile.
To effect a long-term change, the cause would have to be long-term as well. Unless there is a butterfly flapping its wings in the same way daily for a century (with exactly the same results - against chaos theory principle anyway) then it's not likely at all to have an effect on the climate. This is what makes climate such a reliable measuring point - it takes a LOT to make small changes in climate.

the cause doesnt have to be long term. a butter fly flaps it wing causing a tornadoe in austrailia that shifts a low pressure system north causing the pacific ocean current to stall by a day, delaying la nina by a week and pushing the jet stream off which melts the glaciers a little more than usual.... you dont seem to truly understand the butterfly effect. think a snow flake on the mountain side that causes an avalanche which kills the parents of the president who would eventually stop ww3.... only on a more realistic scale. the butterfly effect is what makes climate science as much of a joke as weekly weather forcasts. you cant know the unknown. you cant predict chaos. you cant graph chaos in an attempt to explain it. it is unexplainable by definition. blaming the half a degree celcius (what is that, a tenth of a real degree?) on SUVs is retarded. its just as likely blamed on a snake farting in the sahara or a supernova in an, as yet, undiscovered galaxy. btw, they think a supernove attributed to the mildness of the little iceage. so its not out of the question to blame our tenth of a degree warming trend on some other celestial body, or a mouse sneazin in zimbabwe.
