Seriously. They're all claiming the RF causes cancer, and the fact that those wireless signals "back feed" into the homes wiring violates federal wiretap laws. lol. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Stop+smart+meters&oq=Stop+smart+meters

the only real reason to not want them is because they are accurate.

Hell yeah I support smart meters. I have caught my gas company twice estimating usage instead of reading meters. The second time I filed a complaint with the BBB.

Actually there are stories out there stating just the opposite. Since "smart meters" are software-based, it leaves people vulnerable to the utility company either deliberately or accidentally to set up the software with the wrong values for the circuit type/etc. which can easily result in overbilling. One case had a person's utility bill double after a new meter was installed, and the utility company insisted it was accurate, and that likely he was being underbilled by the old meter. He hired an electrician, collected empirical evidence and presented it to the utility company, who eventually discovered that the meter had been programmed with a multiplier of "2" instead of "1". He got this admission in writing from the utility company, who also admitted the error was found on other meters. In that case, having your utility bill double immediately is sure to set off some alarms, but what happens if they set the multiplier to 1.1 or 1.2, to give themselves a nice 10-20% revenue boost? You may never notice that difference, and you'd have a much harder time proving it if you did suspect something.

never thought of it this way, but yeah I could see utility companies abusing the system.

Was actually thinking more the other way. Those older meters tended to corrode and move slower than they should have.

Add to that that the tech underlying them is not quite there yet. They do obviously pass a pulsed digitial signal into the home across what is supposed to be a straight up analog circuit. This starts causing problems with some devices in the home. Appliances that mysteriously die? TV's of computer monitors that suddenly seem squirrely. Electricl motors running hotter than they should. Not to mention the awful things that it does to any existing lower power digital control systems. Stuff like Powerline ethernet over household wiring, yeah that gets killed dead. Oh and if you are a model railroader using modern DCC to control your trains. Dead. So while the issue does seem to attract an inordinate amount of the tinfoil hat wearing crazies. There are some legitimate concerns with the technology that probably do need to be addressed in a grown up manner.

So tempting to set up internet across my house's electrical system and have it go down so we can tell them to remove our "smart" meter... Having to wait until 7pm to do dryer loads and other stuff is pretty stupid, considering I only have so much free time with being a full time student, single mom, etc. etc. I feel even worse for people who already have no jobs (I'm thinking elderly, retired people) who now have to pay a huge premium to be able to heat their houses during the day, peak times. And night shift workers? Yup, they're screwed too.

The BBB? Wouldn't you get better results if you filed a complaint with the PSC?

I generally get the best results when I send letters to the attorney general.
