Wow, Joe Vitt, the assistant head coach and LB coach also suspended for 6 games.

Well, I guess the Saints won't be playing in the Super Bowl in the Super Dome.

Yeah, its like football and stuff. Why should players try to hit each other? When I played ball I tried to do that shat for free. That was like the whole point of playing defense was to jack the other team up. If you hit them hard enough they were afraid to play.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but someone please give me the list of players that were hurt and carted off the field.

Not counting Pierre Thomas when he was hit by the 49'ers.

Will the NFL be looking at the other teams now, since so many players have come out and said this exists in a lot of locker rooms?

Guess I will be doing a lot of fishing this fall.

Did you win a price for asking stupid questions? We were always pushed to give 100%. To hit as hard as we could. To rattle the other team. To make them not want to play any more. Is there really any difference between coaches telling a player to go out there and jack someone up or giving them a tiny 1,000 - 1,500 bonus for jacking someone up? That money to a pro football player is NOTHING. Not even to a rookie making league minimum.

If they are going to suspend for this then they should suspend any coach anywhere that encourages their players to go out and eff the other team up with hard hits.

Or maybe we should just change the NFL to two-hand-touch.

EDIT: Isn't it funny that the PLAYERS have no responsibility in this? Of course the NFLPA stepped in for them.

I think the union is still investigating and when they are done, then the league will start on the players.

Can the league just make the Saints forfeit all the games this year?

I never had a coach tell me to hurt anyone either. But they did tell me to knock the shit out of people. But I'm assuming your coaches, during the pep talks would say things like, "I want to seem good tackling! I want to see some not-too-hard hitting! I want you to hit them so hard that they almost stop moving forward, but not so hard that they would move backward and might possibly risk injury! LET'S GO OUT THERE AND GIVE 50% AND SHOW THEM THAT WE COULD DO MORE BUT WE WON'T BECAUSE WE MIGHT HURT SOMEONE! LET'S KIND OF GO!"

I was moved from offense to defense because of my willingness to hit people. I remember the day it happened, where the wideouts and secondary were running 1 on 1 drills. The defenders had arm pads and were supposted to hit the receivers after they caught the ball. This drill trains you to hold on to the ball when hit.

Well the d-backs were barely hitting the guys. As a wideout I volunteered to switch sides. I de-cleated the first guy I faced, and the coaches patted me on the back. I never played offense again... and this was just high school.

No, I understand it perfectly well. This is an NFL who gives wrist slaps and small suspensions for illegal hits but goes all eye-for-an-eye over a pittance paid for legal hits.

Bounty hunting in the NFL is not new, it has been around a long time. I just wonder what it is this time that is causing the NFL to apeshit. What did the Saints do to piss off the NFL?

Yes, and the goal of the Oklahoma drill was to knock the ever-loving crap out of your teammate. It was one of my favorites.

I honestly don't care about the safety of the players. They make millions of dollars to play a game for my entertainment and I find hard hits entertaining. I don't wish injury on anyone but I do wish a hard game with the chance on injury on every single one of them.

All of this pussification may not be 'ruining the sport' like the hysterical whiners claim but it is taking something away from it.

Well, since they were being paid for a "knock out hit" I would say it was for hard hits. I don't recall seeing anyone ever knocked out of a game for a very very light hit.

I was associated with Div-1 football and no, no coach I ever saw ever told anyone to knock someone else out. Real pros are about football, not cheap shots.

When you have to knock another player out you're a chickenshit who can't win the right way. Hard hits are one thing...intentional injuries?

That isn't football. That's just cheap shot BS.

Williams got what he deserved and should never be allowed to coach again. NOLA got hit hard but I am glad they did. A message needed to be sent, I'm glad the NFL took this seriously.

Where did I say anything about cheap shots? What kind of reading disorder do some of you have where you are always reading words that aren't there? I LOVED to hit when I played football. I didn't go for knees, or the back or any cheap shots. There was always a great satisfaction that came from cleanly knocking the other guy on his ass.

FYI, scrubbing jock straps and filling cups makes not a Div-1 expert on locker room behavior. Or were you a helmet painter?

Article posted:
Spare me the outrage, the moral posturing and the sanctimonious grandstanding by anyone who claims to be offended that pro football is a tough, violent, nasty game.

Football has risen to its status as America's favorite sport because of the game's inherent physical nature.

Watch any game at any sports bar, and you hear whoop after whoop after whoop when a helmet-launching hit is replayed once, twice, three times on the television screens.

Speed, athleticism, drama, the betting line – all of that contributes to football's popularity.

But the violence – the big hits -- takes it over the top. It makes the crowd roar.

...

Since Friday's announcement, the reaction among current and former players has been widespread and predictable, with many saying that players have had bounties for decades.

It is part of their game – part of their culture, really – for players to have an incentive among themselves to get a payoff for big plays and big hits.

It's one thing to get a weekly six-figure paycheck from your employer. It's quite another to take a few hundred bucks off a guy you see in your position group's meeting room every day for six months. It's not the money but the achievement.

There is a warrior code in football that puts a premium on toughness, whether it's playing with pain, going over the middle to catch a pass or delivering big hits.

It is celebrated in the history of the game, despite some horrible consequences.

The late Jack Tatum, who spent most of his pro career playing safety for the Raiders and was nicknamed "The Assassin," was involved in one of those horrible events.

In a 1978 exhibition game, Tatum collided with Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley, who was stretched out going for a pass over the middle. Stingley was paralyzed for life. Stingley died in 2007.

Two years after the hit, Tatum wrote his autobiography "They Call Me Assassin." Tatum wrote that he wanted a receiver to go back to the sideline with "train whistles blowing in his head."

To the end, Tatum never expressed regret about his playing style.

Chris Spielman, one of the most admired Lions of his era for his all-out play at linebacker, often spoke about the intent of a hard, legal hit that might put a player out of the game.

But you wanted the player to get up and play the next week, not end his career, Spielman said.

Well, they changed the rules after the playoff game the Saints won to get to the Super Bowl because Brett didn't get a chance to touch the ball in overtime.

They then went on to beat the Colts and Peyton Manning.

No one has given me the list yet of the players that were carted off the field. I guess the league is also saying that their refs are blind and all need to be replaced.

Yeah, lets also ignore the fact that this is player pooled money that goes into a kitty to be paid out to the players. So much for office pools in the NFL!

Odd that the Redskins had no fines or suspensions when they admitted doing this exact same thing in 2008 with Gregg Williams on the staff. It is said he also did this with the Bills, Titans, and Jags, but nothing done there either. Odd that it is only the Saints, and don't get me wrong, I don't even like the Saints. There is something else going on here.

No, but what about all the other players coming out saying this went on in their locker rooms?

It was not okay, and I am troubled by it, but please, do you believe this was the first time this happened?

At least I am not a season ticket holder anymore.

I think I will boycott all pro football this season.

I am surprised at Payton's punishment. It feels excessive when compared to Loomis whom we know blatantly lied by his own admission. To the NFL and to his owner as well. It feels like the punishments between those two should be reversed.

I think the franchise itself got off light compared to what I feared. I thought they would lose first round picks (and certainly more than two) and much more than 500k.

As for Williams...I think that if he is reviewed after 2012 and let back in...in effect receiving the same punishment as Payton..that will be a travesty. No way Payton should receive the same punishment as Williams. But we shall see.

Finally, yes, it's been said most teams do this. Fine. However, the Saints are the team that got caught and they must pay the price. I'm just going to be loving life if they come out and rip it up anyway shutting up all the "holier than thou, oh we don't do this so they deserve it" attitudes I see here and elsewhere. Save it. talk_hand

Good decision by Goodell. He has been limp wristed with fines for most things, it is time he actually made an example of someone.

I don't nkow anything about football so I don't know who is who but the coach who knew about the scheme should have been banned for life, not just for a year or 6 games or whatever. That's minor.

Gregg Williams (the coach that did it) IS basically banned for life or at least until the commish deems. Peyton (Saint's head coach) said he knew nothing about it from what I've heard.

The Rams really are screwed. They did nothing wrong and will lose Gregg Williams as a defense coordinator.

No thats another coach. Gregg Williams is basically banned for life. Peyton is banned for a season and the third coach for 6 games. The Saints lose two second round picks and a fine of $500

I always have fun on here. You should do more reading on the whole "scandal" though. They where paid for big hits. They were paid MORE for knockouts and injuries. They weren't only paid for injuries. It should also be noted, this money was paid out of a pool of PLAYER money.

They do the same thing for big plays, picks, forced fumbles. The Redskins did the same thing in 2008 and prior with the same coach, yet there is no punishment for them. This is not new. It has been around for decades.

Football is a violent sport and fans go hysterical over the huge hits. It is a part of football DNA. Any football fan who is upset about players paying each other for big hits is a hypocrite. No where in any article I've read was it ever mentioned that they were issuing illegal hits with the sole purpose of injuring someone for 1,000 bucks. This was all to do with anything resulting from a legal hit.

Like I said earlier, players get fined for and maybe eventually suspended for dishing out seriously dangerous hits, but the NFL goes all eye-for-an-eye for exchanging a few bucks among players over LEGAL hits.

Maybe Ndamukong Suh should have been permanently banned from football last season? Nah, can't get rid of the leagues "dirtiest player", you have to go after dudes dishing out legal hits!

The main issue is wanting to injure. THAT is why these people were punished. Dislocated jaws, broken bones, cheap shots. I'm sorry you're in so much of a meltdown that you have lost the ability to think critically and common sense. I know you were the hard hitting badass whereever you played but maybe you got your own brains scrambled.

Nobody is complaining about good solid clean hits. It's wanting to take someone out of the game that is an issue.

You really should see a doctor about that reading disorder. Suh WAS suspended. Why? Because it wasn't a legal hit. THAT is what this is about.

Ok, what Saint players were paid a bonus for illegal hits?

I'll let an NFL player say it better than I can.

http://www.foxsportsdetroit.com/03/05/12/New-Orleans-bounty-hunting-part-of-NFL-D/landing_lions.html?blockID=680112

Article posted:
Chris Spielman, one of the most admired Lions of his era for his all-out play at linebacker, often spoke about the intent of a hard, legal hit that might put a player out of the game.

But you wanted the player to get up and play the next week, not end his career, Spielman said.

So, should Spielman have been kicked out of the NFL?

Again, I've seen nothing to say that any Saint was compensated for an illegal hit. I'll sit here and wait while you provide an example.

I'll sit here and wait while you learn to read and then return to the actual context of the issue. The Saints are getting hurt for an official bounty program that included taking players out of the game.

"Statement to players: The league has yet to announce punishment for players involved in this case. It's safe to assume the Saints organization and leadership will pay the highest price. Those critical of Goodell for his unilaterally administered punishment of players must now acknowledge the commissioner will hold teams and coaches accountable, too. The talk about higher standards has more merit following this punishment."

What do individual players have to do with it? I'm sorry they never managed to cripple Favre or Warner and get their payout. silly You do realize the NOLA program was set down in writing, don't you?

When I played you got stars for your helmet for big hits. Casue a fumble, sack the QB. This is not what people are talking about and nobody needs you to explain football to them. What you fail to grasp is that the issue is not about clean hits and even if the NOLA bounty system included reward for them that is not the main issue. The main issue is intentionally injuring other players. In this case named players.

"With his ruling, Goodell effectively ensured that defensive players never again will collect money to financially reward teammates for intentionally hurting opposing players. The Saints brazenly did it for three seasons, from 2009 through 2011, even when they knew the league was on to them. They had bounties out on Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in the playoffs, and they had bounties out last season on Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton."

Let me repeat.

"financially reward teammates for intentionally hurting opposing players"

What part of this is going over your head?

If you have trouble find a 5th grader and have them read it to you slow. Maybe sounding out the big words will help. This was not about bounties for good hits even if that eventually was tainted by the real crime...this wqas bounties for taking major players out of the game, players identified by name and with the intent to hurt them so that they could not continue playing.

How big of a douchebag do you have to be to fail to grasp this?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7718549/nfl-harsh-penalties-new-orleans-saints-ensure-elimination-bounty-systems

I must have missed it Mr. Hard Hitter. Where did you play again? And when did the tell you, "You see Mark Johnson over there? I'll give you a C-Note if you break his leg?"

Choosing a Detroit player was pretty stupid. Their coach is one of the worst offenders.

As I said, real football players don't need to knock players out of the game just because they are an inferior team and can't win within the rules of the game. Saying, 'I want Favre out of the game" is not football. It's criminal cowardice.

Afio,
I am not trying to be ass busting on NOLA. If this were the Packers I would be heartbroken. Yes, it happens in other teams and other places....but NOLA took it to the house. They asked for this.

And as a Trojan I know what it feels like to have your team be made the example.

Remember, though coaches come and go. Your team abides.

Unless you are a Raiders fan. Or one of those other mobile teams for sale. Then your team aboards a buss to some other city.

First player they already have enough to go after is Jonathan Vilma for offering 10k to anyone that knocked Favre out of the '09 Champ game.

As to the argument going on, there's a difference between hitting hard and attempting to injure. Those are different ways of playing, and if you can't see that, you're missing something.

The 2006 Saints season was what the entire region needed. You could take time off from working on your house and watch the game and have something to cheer about.

The 2009 season was magical. The tears I shed were happy tears and sad tears that loved ones did not live to see them win the Super Bowl.

I will not apologize for being a Saints fan.

and you shouldn't be Afio. The thing that shocks me is that the Saints are getting 10x the punishment that Penn St. is getting for allowing a serial rapist to use their institution as the foundation for consuming children's innocense for 30 years. There should be no Penn St. football for 10 years.

Well, it turns out the Saints were warned once with no consequences. They kept right at it, lying the whole time. It's no surprise the NFL dropped the hammer on them. How stupid can you be? They knew the NFL was watching them.

They got exactly what they deserved. The fans should be pissed at the organization, not the penalties they received.
