Either is fine.
Grits I generally add butter and salt, so I will go with oatmeal if I'm not in the mood for buttery flavor.
Probably would depend on whether I'm eating something else too. I don't think I've ever ordered oatmeal as a side dish, but I would order grits with a big breakfast.

I've never had french toast so i cant comment, but fried bread is lovely. It's really crispy and light (albeit not healthy light lol), and all lovely and golden.
And now im glad there's no bread in the house or i'd make fried bread and dip it in runny-boiled eggs.
