Brilliant, its that kind of out of the box thinking that government will never hope to counter.

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2012/03/19/the-pirate-bay-to-fly-server-drones-to-avoid-law-enforcement

The world’s largest and most resilient BitTorrent site plans to redefine “cloud computing” with a plan to move at least some of its servers onto unmanned drones miles above Sweden.
In a Sunday blog post, The Pirate Bay announced new "Low Orbit Server Stations" that will house the site's servers and files on unmanned, GPS-controlled, aircraft drones.

One of the sites administrators, MrSpock, said with the advent of miniature computers such as the Raspberry Pi, a $35 micro computer the size of a thumb drive that includes a WiFi and SD card slot for storage, the site can take its servers far from any law enforcement.
“We’re going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air,” MrSpock wrote. “This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.”

The Swedish site has operated since 2003 by an “anti-copyright organization” and despite numerous raids, remains one of the most popular music and movie pirating sites on the web. The site hosts thousands of “torrent” files—tiny files that allow users to connect to and download files from other users. The system is one of the most popular ways to anonymously share large files and often comes under fire from copyright holders, who argue that the service allows people to easily share copyrighted movies, music, games and software.

The site has repeatedly mocked American copyright laws and has said that American laws “[do] not apply [in Sweden].” Earlier this year, four of its staffers were sentenced to Swedish prison. Last year, the site apparently moved some of its servers to a mountain cave complex in Sweden.

“Experiencing raids, espionage and death threats, we’re still here,” the site wrote in a blog post last month.

“We’ve been through hell and back and it has made us tougher than ever.”

The move to hovering servers could make it nearly impossible for authorities to shut the site down, a fact not lost on the site’s administrators.

“We can’t limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore,” MrSpock wrote. “When time comes we will host in all parts of the galaxy, being true to our slogan of being the galaxy’s most resilient system.”

like the article says, attacking their drones is an act of war.
launching rockets, shooting them down, hacking them, thats an act of war on a civilian owned air craft.

what government is going to support that?
well, aside from the US...

Saying that they'll never counter shit they invented is the height of ignominy.

weve said that attacking a civilian aricraft is an act of war.

and, aside from the US, what country is going to support an act of war over some greedy corporations pocket book?

And EVERYONE knows that it's just impossible for a government to commit and act of war while making it look like something else. The military has many methods available to them to accomplish this. Don't be naive. BT might be that stupid sweeny, but you certainly aren't.

Again, if the government is going to commit resources and money and risk bad PR should they get caught, or even worse should someone get hurt or killed by the debris of a shot down drone hits them

The US has no jurisdiction to shoot down civilian aircrafts of other countries. The fact that "we could get away with it" just makes us even more bad. We're not the world police nor are we the police of the internet. When did the federal government assume the power to have this kind of authority? Copyright companies can bring them to civil court, but having an actual military act used against a civilian aircraft in another country because they're not complying with copyrights? Seriously? When does it stop?

they can most certainly make it look like anything they want
all the standard americans will buy the story that "all their drones were hit by freak lightning" and LOL all over the internet about it.

ONLY dumb americans will buy the crazy story.
do you really think america is going to risk an open act of war over some companies pocketbook?
do you think russians, chinese, all of eastern europe are going to just sit there as america starts using acts of war (labled by some as terrorism) to prevent the world from borrowing copies of american music and movies that suck anyway?

how far do you think the government is going to go to protect their investors pocket books?

or do you think sony will hire blackwater to take it out?

either way, an act of aggression against a civilian entity is definitely an act of war.
what do you think the UN would have to say about an american entity openly attacking a civilian aircraft in sweden?

If I were them I would merely plot a routine course to follow locally and not have it linked to the ground outside of telling where it is to prevent any sort of stuxnet type or whatever type virus from happening. Just have it go in a loop after knowing how long it could fly for on a certain path

Stuxnet happened either from an inside sabotage or because someone got stupid and somehow connected their servo/machining system to an outside seen network. Happens a lot because no one really appreciates the value of a network security analyst until it's too late.

We wouldn't openly attack anything.

It would be farmed for intelligence first, cause that's the smart thing to do.

After that it would be crippled electronically. No need to crash the plane, just the software.

What's been happening so far is mostly just the DOJ and the State Dept flexing political muscle. You start using predator drones for mobile black market communication - then you are playing with the big boys. They won't show up with warrants and lawyers and argue their case in front of judges.

For all the talk about the big ebil gubmit y'all don't seem to have a sweet fragging clue what it's actually capable of.

Everyone knows what the government is capable of. Hacking anything not yours, and especially not anyone of the same country, is against the law, no matter what

Stuxnet was technically more or less as physical of an attack as setting off C4 in a nuclear enrichment plant. Aka an act of war technically yet the "good guys" are apparently the ones behind it so it was a good thing

The fact that the government would go to such heights to do it would tell another thing -- how much influence copyright industries inside the US have on the US government. That form of attack is a level of planning that is technically criminal if not downright a terrorist attack seeing how it would happen against a civilian organization. The US government is just as capable of committing terrorist attacks as Iran is, never forget that. Just because we're doing it with our own vision of the right intentions doesn't make it right.

Actually our own fighter jet JAS-39 which is used by a number of countries.

If not that, then we have several ground to air alternatives.

If it's being used in the commission of a crime I don't think they need the consent of the people to bring it down.

Just because we're doing it with our own vision of the right intentions doesn't make it right.

it makes us terrorists

and again, does tali really think the rest of the world is going to let it fly?

Of course, but Sweden right now doesn't recognize what they are doing as a crime. The internet doesn't just give US companies and the US government international jurisdiction. They're allowed to sue them in Swedish courts but civil law for copyright in Sweden is kind of iffy

If they were flying above the USA, sure shoot them down. Go for it. I'd throw rocks at it myself because that'd be cool

Maybe. People would rather see us win unconstitutional moral victories rather than actually follow the law these days. Our 2 wars kind of prove that. Any sort of attack of that sort is by international law classified as an invasion, or since we re-wrote that rule book, we would fall right under the definition of being a terrorist that we ourselves wrote. Kind of ironic you think about it. Most people don't though because the media has proven it has the tools to change the minds of people to ignoring the law and instead follow the flag, even if it is being waved by a bunch of criminals.

heh.. Not in Sweden, politicians actually resign and get jailed here.. and there is no presidential pardon to be had.. We actually still hold our leaders to a moral standard.

As much as I am a patriot and want what is for the best for the USA there are lines that must not be crossed for a reason. We should not forget that the repercussions can not always be blocked by our bigger military force. Every bully eventually sees his day, we cannot be a nation of vigilantism as that puts just as much chaos into the world as the most evil of power

That and shooting down targets over Sweden would be an act of war against the EU.. Basically leaving you alone against the world.

Drones are only one option, tiny little servers can be put anywhere, they can be carried around by reindeer with collars if it comes to that, hell they could make them waterproof and dump them in the ocean and the wave action could actually power them, hundreds of thousands of them floating around with little antenna trailing behind them, they could stick them on the sides of buses, toss them into garbage dumps, stick them under tables in 5 star restaurants, put them inside touristy crap and let people pay for them and then take them home with them......

We are fast approaching a point where technology will allow for the distribution of information to anyone anywhere...no matter what any nation tries to do to stop it. It's a losing battle for media corporations to try and fight against it, they need to come up with ways to profit in the new order of business....because the old one is dying and is never coming back.

Seems like a bad idea to me. The financial investment of setting it up and keeping the drones up should be fairly pricey. Also, in the drone(s) crashes that would be an expensive hit to the infrastructure.

Having said that, I don't see why people think it would take much effort for copyright interests getting permission from the Swedish government to take the drones out. I imagine there are several different ways to couch the language to avoid any hint of 'war' and given that there are some Pirates Bay folks already serving prison time, it doesn't appear the Swedes are unwilling to deal with internally operating criminals.
