That Japan tsunami looked pretty damn bad. Really fast, powerful, and can't GTFO and it stays around for a long time.

Tornado. I have nightmares about them. Apocalyptic end of the world type with tornadoes and erupting super volcanoes.

Yet I don't even think about them much, even when I lived in Oklahoma.

Yeah you can have the eruption/earthquake way far away and still have a tsunami. Plus, the OP said you didn't have to actually be in an area where you could possibly experience them...

None of them.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to die some day, I'm not all that concerned at how it happens as long as my house is clean (or completely destroyed so no one can see the mess) when I do. So a horrible natural disaster killing me while destroying my home actually is a comforting thought. I don't have to clean the place up that way. tongue

Something far more common than all of those... wild fire.

Years ago when I was a volunteer firefighter, I ended up fighting a couple of wild fires in the mountains of western VA.

There is nothing more terrifying than to see a patch of mountain laurel explode into a fire storm right below you.

It created a fire devil about 30 foot tall that came what can only be called "screaming" up the side of the mountain at us....

I remember is the fire boss screaming at us to run and me shucking the blower pack off my back and hauling arse through the trees into an old burn area....

Fire Chief was okay with loosing the blower instead of me.

That monster blew in at 7pm on the busiest weekend of the year. If the state of MN wouldn't have been shut down there would have been a lot more injuries and deaths since the St Croix state park would have been open. The park closed on June 30 because of the state shut down

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/st_croix/slideshow_storm.html

Approximately 11,000 acres had at least 50%
damage to the trees (shown in blue on map), and
9,600 of those acres lost 75-100% of the trees.
Previous windstorms shrink in comparison to this
event. See map to the right for more detail.

Living in AZ, we have none of the ones listed other than Heat Wave and air conditioning takes care of that.

I will go with Volcanic Eruption of the ones listed because Yellowstone could reach all the way to Phoenix and destroy everything.

Picking from something not listed, I'll go with asteroid/comet impact because if it's big enough, it doesn't really matter where it hits.

I'm actually looking forward to a tsunami... Is that bad? lol... I don't know... Cuz I'm thinking that since I'm a lardass, my blubber will be the perfect buoyancy to float up to the surface of the water... tongue

I've had repeating themes in my dreams/nightmares my entire life. Water has been the 1 constant in all of them. Many times it was a tsunami or massive flood. I've had some crazy apocalyptic tornado dreams but they don't seem to have the same impact as the water dreams.

Probably earthquake or tornado. Just too fast and unpredictable. Hurricanes are pretty bad also sometimes

Flooding and tsunami would be easy. I am a pretty good swimmer

I am actually sort of interested to see what a earth quake is like now that I live in California. I keep getting told they're common but I've yet to feel anything yet. I am told that also might mean a big one could happen at any moment since it has been a while

I'm not all that afraid of any natural disaster, since... they're unstoppable forces of nature.

Even the few earthquakes I've experienced I enjoyed while it was happening.

Well, while this is true it also has the least chance of happening in our lifetimes. And while this has happened in the past it should be clear that as time goes on the chances go down. Why? Because space is less and less cluttered all the time. Gravity has done a lot in the solar system to clean up the debris. Maybe this will help you sleep easier at night.

We're actually long overdue for a significant impact, statistically speaking. Same goes for an ice age.

I know they are there DE, but early in the solar system's formation many more existed. All the others have crashed into something or escaped. And for the ones you listed there is a lot of space.

The only thing that happens here is Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Volcanoes.

There have been no Tsunamis, one Volcanic eruption, and at least 4 earthquakes here that I've been around for.

Of course, there are many more earthquakes, but I mean ones that are big enough to be felt by humans.

So I'm more worried about Earthquakes, they're far more likely to kill me than the other two combined.

You must have missed the "statistically speaking" part of what I said.

On a side note, fewer objects doesn't mean there will be less of a chance of impact. An object could hit our moon or a moon of one of the other planets and blow off a chunk of it which could change the odds entirely. Tidal forces of Jupiter or Saturn could tear apart one of their moons or cause them to collide (some are likely to do that in time). Knock a moon out of Jupiter's orbit and have it hit anything else can easily cause a chain reaction leading to an Earth impact.

We still get bombarded on a daily bases by small objects. A rock flying fast enough through space, even one the size of a refrigerator, could make a very big hole and cause a whole lot of collateral damage. It is not a matter of "if" it is a matter of "when".

Is it likely to happen soon? Not really, but it's also not likely that I'll ever see a typhoon or volcanic eruption in Michigan, either. Tornadoes are the only thing on the list we get much of and even those are rare.

So HV, I understand those things can happen, but you don't believe that having half the debris in our space cuts the odds exactly in half?

Half the number does not, in fact, cut the odds in half. It would very much depend on which objects were removed. The lighter ones? The heavier ones? Ones close together or far apart? Etc., etc., etc. A heavier object passing near a lighter object will affect the trajectory of the lighter object much more than the heavier one, but both will be affected.

It is the complexities of the interactions between the objects in space that make it very hard to predict what will happen exactly.

Humor me for a moment HV. Let's suppose you have to make 2 runs across a football field. On run one there are 20 marksmen with all different calibers of riffles shooting at you. On run 2 half of them have been removed. Are you chances of getting hit on run 2 cut in half or not?

Again I say, it depends on which marksmen are removed, the ones with good aim or the ones with bad aim. My odds could improve depending on your answer.

How many times are you going to keep asking the same question and expect a different answer? Ben Franklin has a saying for this behavior.

Well HV, it is totally beyond me how you can say one certain type of debris is removed and another remains. I don't think anything on this can be proven one way or another. I only know that impacts become more rare over time. Why? Because for every impact the is one less body floating around looking for a target. It is known that the moon was not created when the earth was. And the moon has a lot of damage from impacts to it right now. And at this time they have virtually been eliminated. Just look at the evidence. It's out there.

The problem, Reapist, is that you come into these arguments expecting people to answer it like you want them to. I've seen you do this over and over again in many threads. I know exactly what you WANT me to say, but I won't because what you want me to say isn't true.

The "number" of things is only one factor in many that determine odds in cases like the one we are discussing. Excite a bunch of lead atoms by heating them and you will see many more collisions between the atoms than with a much lighter element like hydrogen (assuming you have the same number of atoms). Halving the quantity isn't enough information to determine how much the odds would be modified. Do you understand?

That is not true most of the time. An impact can and does create many more objects. All would be smaller than the largest object involved in the collision, but there would be a new object created for each piece that escaped the gravity of the initial collision.

Do you have any idea how many objects fly in and out of the Oort Cloud in any given year? Do you know if there are any large objects out there? I would say with some confidence that nobody can give an exact (or even close) answer to either question.

Fewer objects in the inner solar system? Sure, I can buy that line of reasoning. Fewer objects in total? Not bloody likely.

But that's the thing when Earth is involved... it only takes one that is big enough or fast enough to cause a whole lot of trouble. The problem: we can't "see" most of them, just based on the evidence that we are finding more all the time.

Yes, it's very likely in the asteroid belt and the Oort cloud. Gravity from Jupiter, Mars, the sun, and each other pull on those things all the time causing collisions. Most of them are too small to have their gravity strong enough to cause these collisions to make them stick together.

As for the larger objects, you are correct. Even a large object hitting the moon would have very little of the debris leave the moons gravitational field and far less completely escape the pull of Earth's gravity.

Another point too HV. You say collisions have the chance of putting up even more smaller debris. Well, I don't think that's new. That's always been the case. And in the past here was more debris doing this. Near space? Yes, less now. In total? No, I agree. Because stars are constantly blowing up all over the universe. But the evidence of what I say is right in front of your nose. Scientist even say, early in formation the moon, as well as other bodies, took much more of a beating but over time there is less and less in the solar system to pound us.

Look at all the craters. None of them are new. Of course the moon gets pounded with more because of the lack of an atmosphere. But they've had a lot of big impacts, and we have too. The scars here are just mostly gone. This planet has been thru a lot of changes. From a molten planet to an ice planet. We only see the evidence of the past few million years. And scientists look at that evidence to give an approximate time line of how often it happens. But they can't tell you how often it has happened on evidence that does not exist.

What I do know is that people are fallible. Many have agendas or beliefs, intended or not, they want to support. It's amazing how much evidence you can find to support exactly what you believe. That's why I have little faith is what people tell me and more in what I can deduce for myself. That also, why I say their predictions you quoted are wrong. I would be much more confident in saying their predictions on eruptions in Hawaii and Yellowstone are much more accurate.

But for impacts, I call BS on them.

Some people believe the belt is the remanants of a planet destroyed. I do not. I believe we are simply seeing formation that is not yet completed. And likely never will before the solar system is eventually destroyed. But I can also see you at least think about this. I just think your thought process is different than mine.

gamma ray burst from a supernova going black hole that happens to be pointed our way. also another snowball earth type event. even a normal ice age wont wipe us out and as weird as it may sound the only natural disasters im afraid of are ones that have a 0% probability of the human race making it. if we have anywhere on the earth a survivable habitat we will engineer and find a way to survive. our ancestors survived a super volcano eruption some 60,00ish thousand years ago we are far more advanced now and would come up with a way to make it. (might only be the top echelon of society that can afford to get somewhere safe but at least some will make it im sure of that) so the only ones that really i think are scary are the ones no one can avoid, also i want our sad species to survive and make a mess of this universe because i can careless about nature lets mess shit up and advance fast as we can imo.
