The backstory is a very important part of it. If they are suddenly made offplanet aliens, it takes away a large part of the overall story. I know it may not seem like it, but you haven't seen the first move for a long time then if you think it doesn't matter.

I don't see how the alien tie-in helps anything. Turtles being exposed to an experimental mutagen functions perfectly well as an origin story. I don't really care one way or another about this one, but I feel like Bay is screwing it up if only by attempting to fix what isn't broken.
