(AP) STOCKHOLM - Sweden was the first European country to introduce bank notes in 1661. Now it's come farther than most on the path toward getting rid of them.

"I can't see why we should be printing bank notes at all anymore," says Bjoern Ulvaeus, former member of 1970's pop group ABBA, and a vocal proponent for a world without cash.

Apparently the computer they use to compile all of the cashless transactions is a Beast of a machine. devil

Sometimes when I go do Drudge, I play this game where I try to match up the headline with the person who will post it.

I got this one wrong...it had Brother Tedious's "FIAT CURRENCY" written all over it. Then again BT loves him some double posts, so maybe I still have a shot!

"After his son was robbed for the third time he started advocating a faster transition to a fully digital economy, if only to make life harder for thieves.

"If there were no cash, what would they do?" says Ulvaeus, 66."

Um, take his cellphone with all his financial information on it?

Uh, the guy sorta has a point. If you rob someone and all they have is a credit card or a cell phone that's not all that useful. You know it's gonna be shut off within the hour.

Credit and Debit cards should be impermeated with 'stable' gelegnite that, if used with the wrong 'code', blows up.

Sure, there'd be some casual damage, but hey, security is worth the inconvenience (as we now all know).

A lot can happen within an hour.

Someone stole the numbers to my debit card last year and made a fake one and started buying crap at a Wal-Mart in Arkansas. Bank of America, emailed, texted and called me right away and I froze my account within 20 minutes, but they were still able to steal like $500, which I got back but it was still a nuisance.

The guy from BoA said it happens pretty much non stop all day long, people use fake cards, buy a pack of gum and use the cash back feature to take out cash.

Not when the number gets sniffed out of the air over a wireless connection.

Or RFID read while in your pocket.

Or picked up from a slip.

Or...

http://www.wisegeek.com/how-much-do-bank-robbers-steal.htm
there are about 5,000 robberies a year at U.S. commercial banks, More than $40 million US Dollars (USD) is stolen in bank robberies each year in the United States but when broken down by the number of robberies, it turns out that most bank robbers get away with only about $7,700 USD

Cyber Crooks Leave Traditional Bank Robbers in the Dust

http://krebsonsecurity.com/2010/03/cyber-crooks-leave-bank-robbers-in-the-dust/

The FBI hasn’t yet published the 4th quarter 2009 bank crime statistics, but if the $25 million cyber heist figure is representative of a quarterly trend last year — and the first three quarters of stats from last year’s FBI stats don’t deviate much in the 4th quarter — cyber crooks will have stolen well more than twice as much as traditional bank robbers last year in the United States.

I remember my evangelical friends from my childhood telling me about the mark of the beast and how one day we would all have our number tattooed on our fourhead osmethne and this is how we would pay for everything. I also remember thinking that this would be a good idea.

Cyber crooks don't steal your money by holding you up with a knife or gun. I'm not saying that makes it better or worse but the guy was talking about his kid getting robbed. Getting robbed is a lot worse for the person being robbed than having someone steal their CC info with a keylogger.

Robbing someone of their smart phone is a lot more lucrative than taking their cash. Most people don't have that much cash on them.

But the Smartphone itself is worth a lot of money, let alone all the financial information that might be stored on it.

Sweden;s move to a cashless economy will be a boon to the underground economy, which will mean less revenues for the government who seeks to benefit the most with such a monetary policy decision

Even without all the dreaded conspiracy theories about The Mark, the idea of using something embedded into your hand or forehead to purchase makes a lot of sense. We already have a good start on the technology but it would be a long time before we see something like this become mandatory. Probably during Obama's 6th term.
