But what exactly was he suspended for in the first place? I heard that the police report said the neighborhood watch guy had gone back to his car after chasing the kid and the kid followed him and confronted the guy at his car. So that he was just defending himself.

I'm sure both parties are POS's. I'm having a hard time taking any of this crap seriously when they don't flip out every time someone is murdered. Why is little Tyshon(??) specialer than the rest of the hood who shoots each other? BTW the reports I have read said that Zimmerman was following, not chasing Martin, if that was illegal private investigators would be out of work.

Beyond Zimmerman's actions, the police questioned him briefly and let him go...with his gun. The dead kid laid unidentified in the morgue for three days because the police couldn't be bothered to check his phone to see who he was. They didn't pay any attention to him at all, except to check his blood for drugs...which they didn't do with Zimmerman. He might have been buried as a John Doe if his family hadn't filed a missing person report.

Probably like in any other state. If you're the initial aggressor but you use less than deadly force, then someone responds with deadly force, and you kill them...you can make out a defense called something like "imperfect self defense." It basically means self defense where you were wrong in some way, either because you started the fight or because you used too much force.

It generally downgrades murder to manslaughter instead.
