Yeah, I know. But eventually, you will all succumb to an e-reader.

I passionately loved books in the past as well. Next to my desk at home I have about five hundred books stakced neatly in two bookshelves. I have another bookshelf in the living room with all my important fantasy. In my closet I have an enormous box of books I couldn't bear to throw out.

My wife is a reader and when we lived in Spain we had an entire eight foot wide, ten foot high wall covered floor to ceiling with books.

And now I have three hundred on my iPhone/iPad.

I have an entire library at my fingertips that takes up less than the space of one book. And if I want more, I can read reviews, know I'm not buying crap, and download it in under ten seconds.

I can't even read regular books now. The pages frustrate me, as does their weight on my chest.

Bookstores will soon go the way of the eight track tape.

The only people who disagree, don't have an e-reader yet.

But they will soon see the light.

From the time I was young I loved libraries, when I was in grade school my Mom would volunteer and come in and talk to the librarian. She would always know when I was in there because she would see a pair of shoes sticking out of an aisle as I lay there reading.

I just don't feel right without my books - but most of my reading these days is on my eReader. Typically I'll read a book on my eReader and if I really really like the book - I'll try and pick it up the Hardcover version of it. But I can find those online - I don't think I've stepped foot in a book store since I got my eReader.

I have an E-reader and I still prefer books in my hand, I got the E-reader simply for those times where the bulk of a book is not the best situation.

I got rid of my paperback book collection once i started reading ebooks. I even got rid of some of my hardback books. I now have about 3 dozen hardback books left on my book shelf. I only kept those that were worth money.

I do still love old hardback books and may buy a few more. A long drawn out project of mine has been to make a book. I am a decent artist and with a little more practice I may be good enough to make the book I want to. It will contain thousands of years of family lineage and short stories of my ancestors. What makes it such a difficult project is that I want it to be illustrated.

I have a few rough draft copies completed in pencil. I have been using mole-skin note books to practice in.

I have no rational or logical reason why i won't switch to an Ereader, but i'll resist it as long as i can.

I just like having the phyiscal book, and collecting them on the shelf. There is value to them that i don't see in a data file.

Books are on the way out but where advanced e-readers or tablets will really dominate is in education because they can also be vehicles for quizes, homework, encyclopedias, lectures, videos, and more.

I have so many books in my house it is ridiculous. They take up too much space. I look forward to the day I can get rid of them all.

I can see that in 2 generations books will be a puzzling eye turner. Our grandkids are going to go through school on tablets and not even know wtf a book is...

I love books as physical objects, but when it comes to "reading" I prefer to read audio books.

I read about a thousand pages a week for work (and that's down considerably from other times during my career).

My eyes are tired when it comes to free time - it is much more satisfying to me - and easier on my eyes - to put on a pair of headphones and listen to a book.

I was hesitant to get the ereader at first but I very quickly decided I would never buy another paperback book so long as I live.

I always obsessively kept my physical books in perfect condition and that was really sort of a pain in the ass. Holding the book half open, not touching the edges of the pages, etc. The reader is infinitely more convenient to hold and read from.

I was also running out of room to put books. I like collecting things more than the average person but this experience has taught me that I value practicality over sentimentality.

I hear ya Yoss. I keep a couple barrister book shelves of reference books I have collected over the years. However, i give away boxes of books at a time. I will adapt soo I guess. As long as I can annotate in my ereader I should be fine.

Yes Jaedence! Put all your important stuff in a little magic box. And one day, when all the books have been burned for warmth or used as ass paper I hope you've got your batteries, remember your password or even have permission for your treasures. I hope your library doesn't red flag you as a threat to the state.

My wife and son both love reading on ereaders. But I still prefer books. My son is too young and my wife never really loved books the way i do. Sitting or laying down with a book is something I don't think I will lose my love for. We will see I guess.

I know it isn't a full solution, but the Nook allows you to share your books with other people who have a Nook. There is also the (I'm not sure how legal) export to epub route Reeses suggested.

Books where the illustration is the art will survive. And probably cost a bit.

All others, like pulp paperbacks... bye bye.

I will miss books as much as I am already starting to miss newspapers. Yeah, I know newspapers are still around, but the content just plain sucks compared to what it was even five years ago with my local paper (Orlando Sentinel).

Then again, I've been into audiobooks since back when my car had a cassette player so maybe I'm part of the problem.

I kindof wish that whole e-ink think had taken off. A larger broadsheet view of print and pictures is just a nice interface.

I guess next stop for that will be projected holograms.

I love my Nook, thought I would hate it as I love books...but I don't. It's awesome! I buy a lot of books on it now.

However, I still buy a lot of physical books as well. I love the way they look sitting on my bookshelves, I also love wandering around bookstores and just browsing books, usually in genres that I don't normally purchase. I enjoy the act of buying books almost as much as I enjoy the book.

For a title I am waiting on and know I'm going to buy, ebooks are hands down the way to go. I pre-order and it's on my Nook the instant it becomes available. That's pretty damn cool.

For books that I'm not waiting on however, bookstores are still where it's at. I take my Nook with me to B&N and I'll grab a couple of books from new authors or on in store online specials that they run as ebooks. However, the bulk of the books I buy on such trips I need to carry out to my car. I'll like the cover, or be intrigued by the blurbs on the back and I'll buy it. I like to hang out in the coffee shop on nice days and I'll talk with other patrons and see what they are getting, and I'll pick up a copy of a book that one of them suggests.

I have piles of books laying all over my house, bookshelves overflowing with them, entire rooms with nothing in them but books. I'll wander thru the house looking at the books and grab something to read that I hadn't thought of in years, or bought years ago and never got around to reading. My house is known as "the library" to all my friends and acquaintances. It's actually become a named home, as everyone refers to it as that. The first time someone comes over they will do a double take then wander around saying "Holy Shit you have a lot of books" or "Read much?". Even my kitchen is crammed with books. I have to move them to allow people to sit down, as books tend to accumulate on every flat surface including chair seats. Invariably talk will turn to some of their favorite books, often wistfully about how they used to love it but haven't read it in years...and I love being able to say "Just a sec" and run off and grab that book and come back and give it to them.

The physical book has capabilities that ebooks lack as well. I will remember where I bought the book, or when I bought it when I pick it up. Brings back memories and connections that an ebook will never be able to do as the memories are linked to the physical object.

So while I'll be buying a lot of books on my Nook in the future, I'll also be buying a lot of physical books as well. Both have their place.

Color nook here - handles them outstandingly!

I really like the way the nook handles magazines - way way way better than traditional magazines.

If I read a lot of throwaway trash maybe an e-reader would make sense.

I tend to read such esoteric stuff that it a) isn't even available in electronic format and b) reading it in electronic format would destroy the whole fun of it.

My grandparents have a whole room of their house with nothing but books, floor to ceiling. Most of them covered in dust. There is nothing quite like going to that room and prodding through their collection and finding something nobody has read for thirty years on a subject you didn't even know existed.

And then there are gems like their first edition of Dubliners.

Your grandchild is never going to go pouring over your e-reader collection,

Although I am not an elitist snob like Yuki, whose books are so intellectual and eclectic that he wears them as a badge of self proclaimed honor, I like having real books. I like having a house full of bookshelves. I have one with all the Robert B Parker, Robert Crais and Dennis Lehane books, as well as the Lee Child Reacher books. I get a kick out of having full collections and a house full of bookshelves.

The ipad is better for traveling though.

As for workarounds so you can share ebooks...I've always found handing a friend a paperback is a much more human and easy process. Is it even legal to reproduce an ebook?

It's actually more embarassing than anything else IRL. I get weird looks on BART almost daily. Just having a real book on BART these days is rare enough, much less a book that's clearly at least 70 years old, on a subject no one probably even thought there might be books about.

And I don't think it's particularly elitist. It's just like the old verison of looking random stuff up on wikipedia. Unless being curious about the world is elitist. Which maybe it is I guess.

Used bookstores are dying, which makes me very sad. I love used bookstores. I love buying used books, I like the fact that someone before me read the thing, sometimes I'll find some scribbles on the back pages or the book will be signed by someone sending it as a gift. I find the cash receipt occasionally, used as a bookmark maybe(I do that) and I see when the book was originally purchased. Many time it was decades ago, and I imagine who might have bought the book all those years ago and why and how it ended up here.

I find books I loved as a kid in the bargain bins, 2 books for a buck, the covers are a bit tattered and the pages are dry and yellowed, but it's a book I remember reading when I was 11 and haven't seen since....for 50 cents? Hell yeah.

I buy old text books. I'm addicted to them actually. I have hundreds and hundreds of them. Books on electricity and engineering from the 30's and 40's are a particular obsession. I have an electrical engineering handbook written in 1922....it's one of those books you know cost a god damned fortune back in the day, it's packed with tons of info and tables and it's leather bound and on great paper. I paid 3 bucks for it. WTF? I has copious amounts of hand written notes in the margins and whoever owned the thing originally was obsessed with radio.

Ebooks might eventually replace physical books in all cases except for aficionados and special interests....but then again, they might not. Mass market paperbacks are almost surely dying and soon to be a thing of the past, but a quality copy of a cookbook or a technical manual isn't all that easily replaced or the experience of one replicated by an electronic copy.

The ipad is better for traveling though.
This is what finally got me... I got tired of taking up space for two book in my carry on and having 2 or 3 in my suitcase.

Now I just have one physical book and my eReader when I travel. Slowly I found myself preferring the eReader at home as well...

And there are ways to get your 'older' no eBooks into eBook formats...

Books are the main reason I go to garage sales and second hand stores. I can buy a classic hardback for 25 or 50 cents.
I think I also have over 200 cookbooks now.

It makes me sad how fast the world is changing.

On a good note..I do like saving a tree. So that is a positive, and that is how it should be. That's why I am buying up books now, they will be a thing of the past.

And now when you like a book you can no longer hand it to a friend when you are done. They are free, however, to spend $12.99 to get it for themselves.

This is probably the biggest reason why I love the Kindle. I absolutely hate lending books. People have no respect for them. If I give you a paperback in brand new condition and you give it back in dropped-in-the-tub, dog-eared-pages, bent-spine condition, you're a twat. Hell, that's IF you give it back at all. Buy your own books!

Remind me to break into Cobane's house and pee on all his books.

I love books, I love sharing books, I love perusing used book stores. I see value in e-ink and other formats of ebooks where the battery life is vacation length. The newer stuff seems no better than an ipad in terms of power usage though, too bad.
