Finally bought ours today after wondering for ages whether or not it would be worth getting it.

So far we've noted:

It makes the soda REALLY fizzy. So fizzy that Wolfz actually choked from the bubbles first time he tried to drink his soda.
Only tried two flavours (Diet coke and diet Dr Pete which is their equivalent of Dr Pepper) and both are nice, but they gave us a whole selection pack of flavours to try, so we're going to work through them.

Seriously, these things are worth the money. And it's really good fun making your own sodas tongue

Not sure of the exact number but considering we get through a lot of soda in this house, i cant imagine it would be long before it paid for itself.

EDIT: Yeah, the unit itself is pricey, but one bottle of the drink mix ($4.99) makes 12 litres of soda, and i think the carbonation bottle is good for the equivalent of 150 cans or something like it.

I keep thinking about getting one just to readily have carbonated water. I need to figure out a ghetto way to do it with my CO2 tanks...

It's cool to see these coming back again. My mom had something similar from a company called The Pop Shoppe or something like that. Not sure what ever happened to it, but I think it was the first "at home" soda maker.

They're really worth it. And they do subtle flavours if you want lightly flavoured water (or you could just put that mio stuff in, i guess, it's all the same thing).

Yeah, we had one growing up in the UK. I remember, my Nan bought it for us and she would always pick up new flavours for it at the market near her house. I was stoked when i saw they have made a comeback.

I think the most aggravating thing for us using that would be that we have to filter all of our water so we'd have to filter the water first before we could even make the soda then filter more water just to have water to drink. Which we filter the water anyways so it wouldnt be an extra step but ya know what I mean lol It just seems very involved vs just going to the store and picking up a 12 pack.

If you have your own deep well that you dont have to filter the water first it would be perfect.

So get a filter that fits on your tap. That's what we did, problem solved.

If you really want to DIY, you can get a carb cap that fits on a 2 liter soda bottle from any home brew supply store for about 5 bucks, then you can simply attach your CO2 tank and carbonate the water (plus whatever flavors/sweeteners you want) for pennies.

If you really wanted to make it safe and easy to use, you could buy a slightly more expensive cap (around 15 bucks) with a built in adjustable pressure relief valve.

The only downside to something like the Sodastream is the incredibly high cost of replacement CO2 bottles. For less than you pay for one of their tiny little bottles with proprietary threading that will carbonate 40 liters of water, you can get a 20lb tank that will carbonate thousands of liters of water.

They are neat little things despite that however. We had one back in the day and used it to carbonate apple juice and koolade....we never bought soda.

I hadnt noticed a difference between the tap and the jug filters. Water tastes the same in both cases (and unfiltered water around here tastes nasty, it has such a strong chemical taste that even flavour packets cant hide it), so we just stick with the one on the tap. Plus it needs changing less often, which is always good.

Hmm. That looks kind of neat, and not too bad ($80 on Amazon). It would be fun to drink fizzy flavored waters, so long as they aren't flavored with a bunch of crap. I guess you could mix up your own using fizzy water and like lemon/lime.

Do the flavors taste pretty close to the real thing?

Hmmm it looks very intriguing. I wouldn't mind trying it. My biggest thing about bottle/canned drink is the amount of preservatives they put in it (in particular Benzonate)

We got the unit for $120 (it was $150 but there is a mail-in rebate), you can get cheaper ones than that, I think the cheapest is like $80. The syrups are $4.99 each and make 12 litres of soda. I don't know how much the co2 canisters cost though because I haven't needed to exchange ours yet.

I honestly cannot taste the difference between the syrups and the "real thing" for want of a better phrase. And I'm really, really picky about tastes.

If you keg just fill one with water. You'll want to keep it around 30 PSI and either run longer lines or use bayonets to slow it down so it doesn't degass when it leaves the tap. I make my own syrups but they sell them too. Syrup in a cup add carbed water from keg add ice. happy

Thought about it. My concerns are:

1) I don't know how I feel about tap water sitting around with no alcohol to kill the bad stuff
2) I don't want to get a second regulator to keep water at 30 PSI and beer at 12 PSI

I drank sugar-free soda for about 10 years and didnt gain any weight. It's like anything, have it in moderation. If it's all you're drinking, then you have a problem.

Carb'd and chilled there really is no problem. The problems you run into is keeping the syrup from growing crap since it is typically heavy in sugar. The regulator thing comes down to preference... when I built my keezer I wanted the control so I got a nice secondary regulator. It is a lot cheaper just to use splitters or a manifold though. To each their own.

I got really excited about this thing not long ago. Then it seemed like the cost of getting into it wouldn't really pay off. If we were heavy soda drinkers, maybe. But we're really not. If I buy a 12 pack of Coke (got to be cans), it could easily last me 2-3 months.

Tbh if I do have a soda its a diet one but only because of the less sweet taste.

Even if it's sprite, it's coke.

The CO2 bottles have a lame proprietary threading that means you can't just use CO2 from the local party shop without some modifications...

Meh, like i said i've been drinking diet drinks since i was a kid (except for the brief couple of years when i lived with my ex and he banned diet drinks from the house, so stupidly i drank full-fat) and they've never done me any harm. Im not worried.

Did they make you believe that regular soda has fat in it? If so, I'd call that "harm".

"They" refers to the diet sodas that you claim have "never done you any harm".

Well in that case, "they" are inanimate objects and therefore incapable of making me believe anything.

No calories is better than 150 calories but there is some evidence that aspartame causes a similar hormone release profile as sucrose. It can be argued that the release of those hormones negatively impacts how you metabolize the other calories in your diet...

I havent touched aspartame in over 6 months now, i dont even chew gum any more because it has it in it. Sodastream syryps have sucralose instead of aspartame.

Except perhaps for reduction of enamel on your teeth and contributions to decalicification of your bones, as well as metabolic changes based on consumed sugar calories. No observable direct harm perhaps, but lots of long-term metabolic harm.

Pop, soda, coke is all really bad for you.
