Subject: Gas prices reaching record levels, as more refineries are scheduled to shutdown.....
Add one more victim to the soaring price of petroleum—refineries. Yes, despite gas prices rising another 6% in February, refineries in the US Northeast are shutting down because they're losing money, reports Wall Street Journal. And with Philadelphia-based Sunoco set to close the largest refinery in the region in July, expect gas prices to keep going higher. "Our Northeast refining business has lost nearly a billion dollars in the past three years, and those losses have threatened Sunoco's very existence as a company," said a Sunoco spokesman.

Worldwide demand and Mideast tensions have caused the price of oil to soar over the past year, but refineries have not been able to increase their prices to keep up. Northeast refineries don't have the facilities to handle lower-quality, cheaper crude, and a lack of pipelines to the central United States means they don't have access to cheaper oil produced there and have to use more expensive crude from overseas. Combined with the rising demand for gas in summer, analysts think the East Coast could see fuel shortages this summer that push prices to $5 per gallon.

Sounds like more news trying to push up the price of gas. There is no supply problems.

This plant they are closing was built in 1902... it does not make money because it is trying to compete with modern refineries... The fact that no one even submitted a bid to buy the plant is pretty telling. This is there problem

Need to let capitalism work... out with the old and in with the new.

Why is it the powers that be want oil prices to continue to go up until people can't drive anymore?

What? The problem at the refineries is that they are outdated and: "Demand for gasoline in the U.S., meanwhile, is close to a 15-year low, so refineries have been unable to pass on all their costs to customers."

Getting rid of these old things will lower the cost of production... if there is a supply problem someone will step up and meet the need.

If only the EPA would get out of the way and allow any new ones . . .

These plants cannot even refine American oil... they can only refine light sweet crude form the Middle East or Africa... they do not have the technology to refine any other oil. They needed to be closed.

Look like under Obama there is the development of 2 new refineries... 1 in Arizona and 1 in S.D.

Apparently these are the first new refineries in over 30 years!

That's the oldest and most busted line of BS ever.

Hundreds of applications to expand existing refineries have been applied for, and granted, over the past 30 years. Only one, yes ONE, application for a new refinery was even submitted during that time...and it was granted.

The reason no new refineries are being built isn't because the EPA is blocking them, it's because no one is submitting them. The US has an over abundance of refining capacity. We are EXPORTING gas at this time, not because it's profitable (it is, but it's less profitable than producing for domestic consumption), but because we already produce more gasoline than people in the country can use.

US refining capacity used to be fairly spread out and there were dozens of different companies doing it. These days, due to monopolistic attempts by the biggest oil companies, just 5 refineries produce more than 60% of all gasoline, with the remaining amount produced by 12 (soon to be 11) smaller regional ones.

Refining oil into gas is extremely profitable. Refineries in the US made more than 200 billion in profits last year. Nothing would stop a company from getting in on that action.....if there was any action left to get into.

Thinking the EPA is somehow stopping refineries from being built is insane. The EPA is a toothless agency and wholly under the power of whatever corporate interest currently has it's sights set on it.

One pathetically small and the other trying to be blocked by the Seirra club in SD supreme court.

Lovely.

And why is only one "pathetically small" refinery being built?

Oh yeah, because we already produce more gasoline than we can use.

But hey, stick with your clearly completely false talking points till hell freezes over if you want.

I ride an e-bike. I get to work and back for less than 20 cents. Since I plug it in at work it is probably less than a dime to me. You can cry about oil prices or you can do something about it.
