Spring has sprung, Fall has fell, Winter's here, It's cold as heck. I had to read this poem in grade school as an example of a "funny poem"...

When you're in 3rd grade (1978 I believe), in front of the classroom, and you aren't talking about the religious "Hell" and instead using it as a casual descriptor, no.

8 year olds running around saying "What the hell is that?" or "Go to hell!" or "To hell with that." is not something most parents would enjoy having happen, so schools won't generally tolerate it - or at least wouldn't back in 1978. I suspect most parents today would rather not hear their children speaking like that either, but I am not sure what school policies on the topic might be today.

I noticed American websites in general are very sensitive when it comes to certain words (mind you words, not their meaning) but I had no idea it was ingrained so deeply into your culture.

Do 8 year old German kids run around saying "Go to hell!" and "To hell with that!" and "What the hell is going on?" auf Deutsch? I don't know if there is an equivalent to it, but I think it's not so much about the word itself as it is about the concept and it is generally considered an "adult" word - but one you can say in most "professional" conversation. There are subtleties to all language, the use of hell is not the same as sh*t, f***, bitch, ass, c**k, pussy, etc. The use of the word hell is similar to damn with respect to acceptability in polite/professional/formal conversation - damn is OK if you're using it in the classic sense such as "That was fairly damning evidence" even as a kid in grade school, but if you say "Damn you!" or "Goddamn it!" as a kid, you're going to get a talking to, and in professional conversation, it's considered relatively crude.

"Hell" doesn't have any particular nasty connotation in German and little kids wanting to use "strong" language wouldn't use it. It's just a word and using it as a curse would be rather archaic. Kids would prefer to use words such as "fuck", "shit", "asshole" etc. I just have a hard time putting "hell" in the same category. Btw in an ironic attempt to make my point my spelled out cuss words will probably be modded whereas your masked ones will remain unchanged. It really is all about the letters and not the meaning it seems.

Yeah, like I said, language is a funny thing. Also, America tends to be rather Victorian with respect to language as well as sexuality and other vices (alcohol) compared to Europe. I had a friend in college - an exchange student from England and part of his standard vernacular was the word "F***". Now, in casual parlance, my own language tends towards the base, but his use of that and other commonly thought of as "swear" words made my own language seem QUITE tame. He visited my house and was chatting with my parents and dropping F-bombs left and right and even making occasional apologies for it (unnecessary as they were). To put it into a little perspective on the grade school thing, an 8 year old that stood up in front of the class and recited a poem with the phrase "It's cold as hell!" would hear snickers from amongst their classmates and from the teacher, might get a warning such as: "That's not exactly appropriate language now is it?", maybe a bad grade on the assignment, at the absolute worst, they might be sent to the principal's office for a little talking to and possibly not be allowed to go to recess for a few days. If they stood up and said "F*** YOU!" in front of the class, considerably more and immediate punishment would almost surely ensue.
