Need a new rig, around 1500 (willing to go a bit higher if needed.) Used mainly for gaming and perusing the Internets. Occasionally for work.

Was looking at iBuy and Lenovo (a few other spots) and realized I don't have a clue what I am looking for.

Give me a build or thoughts on what to look for.

laptop? desktop?

don't do a pre-built system for gaming unless you just want to get ripped off.

pick a good motherboard and work off that (there's lots of websites that will point you at which ones to buy in certain price ranges).

There's nothing overly complicated about building your own computer...especially if you have another computer you can use to download drivers onto a flash drive and look up any instructions during the process. And there are LOTS of guides you can follow if you have no clue.

if you're set on pre-built systems/places that do it for you, I can't help because I don't know of any that aren't a ripoff.

You can build a kick-ass laptop for 1500 at XoticPC.com

well $1500 could make a godlike desktop if you built it yourself, and a nice one if you had someone else do it.

for a laptop, it would be more like "pretty good"...

You dont have to build your own, sites like xoticpc will build it for you, all you have to do is choose the components on their site and pay them, they'll ship it out to you fully built.

for 1500 you can get a pretty bad ass laptop. 15.6" screen with 1920x1200 resolution or a 17" if you want, a video card good enough to run Skyrim on high everything, 3 year warranty on it, choose what hard drive(s) you want, choose this and that...

they also build desktops though, $1500 will buy you a gaming beast

Wait a few weeks then get the new Ivy Bridge and a GTX680.
Done.

First decide on if you want a laptop or a desktop. If its a laptop, what screen size you want. Keep in mind a 17" gaming laptop is very heavy and not very portable compared to a 13" or 15"

If you are responding to me, I can't because the equipment isn't out yet.

If you are responding to somebody else, it means you are not going to wait and are throwing your money away in which case, you are not worthy of my help.

Thats if you want to go the desktop route and dont mind paying $550 for a video card. Ivy bridge might be worth the wait but an i5 will run any game out there now with no problems *shrug*

you can't? Mithan I thought you were a God.

I would use my own monitor for a laptop so screen size really doesn't matter to me (in this case size doesn't matter.) And I've waited this long I could wait a few more weeks. This carp-bucket laptop is still working.

So what.

In 3 weeks he can spend the SAME MONEY and get a new CPU that out performs the 2500k by about 10-15%. Why wouldn't he do that? Sounds stupid to me.

The $550 video card argument is personal preference. He could spend $300-600 obviously. I just prefer to go all out and forget about it for 2 or 3 years myself.

Only takes about an hour to put everything together.... I would suggest seeing if there are any computer repair shops in your area and ask them if they would be willing to assemble a computer for you. I know we have on guy in my town where that is 75% of his business. He charges like 50/hr to do it (includes full set up of windows and any other programs you ask him to install.)

Its really worth it to build your own. Makes upgrading much much easier and far cheaper (most pre-builts are done in a way so you CANNOT upgrade without just buying a whole new computer)

Things you need. A good Motherboard, A GOOD Power supply, A quality Graphics card, a decent sound card, some RAM, a Case...

Processor - Intel Core i5-2450P Sandy Bridge 3.2GHz (3.5GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623i52450P

Motherboard - ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Memory - Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model 997015

Case - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, comes with Three Fans-1x Front Blue LED 120mm Fan, 1x Top 140mm Fan, 1x Rear 120mm Fan, option Fans-2x Side 120mm Fan

Power Supply - CORSAIR Professional Series HX850 (CMPSU-850HX) 850W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

SSD - Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

HD - Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Graphic Card - EVGA 01G-P3-1460-KR GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Blue Ray burner - LITE-ON Black 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM SATA 12X Blu-ray Burner with Blu Ray 3D Feature IHBS112-04 - OEM

Sound Card - Creative 70SB073A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

Subtotal: $1,337.90

Look at the subtotal... this computer is your destiny... This took me 10 minutes to throw together... I'm sure others can make tweaks and suggestions to either lower the cost or provide you with a better computer in your price range.

Processor and video cards are easy things to decide imo. Deciding on if you want to go HDD or SSD or hybrid is the difficult part imo...

Personally If I were building a brand new computer I'd go SSD for the Op system and HDD for file storage.

What games do you play?

In many cases a $750 computer will do just as well as a $1500 computer, but will need to be replaced a year sooner.

Just like the ski lodge with young women looking for husbands and husbands looking for young girls, the situation is not as symmetric as it first appears.
