The closest I have come to that is juice only. I typically only juice to supplement my meals (a quick breakfast or lunch instead of making something) but I've also done juice only for a week or even just a weekend and felt pretty good after.

I do not think there is any benefit versus just a more constant cutting of the diet. I don't believe the body generally reacts to physical stress (like hunger) by losing more fat.

i usually do it. unless you have a way to suppress appetite and keep your energy levels up, i wouldn't recommend it. it takes quite a while before your body gets used to not eating until way later in the day. cramming down that much food at one time isn't as fun as you think it is.

you're going to be very tired

I'm reading about the 24-48 hours a week fasting (not consecutively), I think I have the willpower to change my lifestyle in that way. Seems there are quite a few benefits and not much downside.

oh ya great idea; raises stress hormones, puts ones body into starvation mode, shuts metabolism down, high portion of next meal is turned to fat, and body breaks down muscle tissue for fuel and bones for calcium.

just exercise for 45 minutes a day, vary your work out, and keep your intake to under 1500 cals a day.

Interesting. He states what not to do, then states you should do exactly that. Unless you're a 100lb female.

Apparently it has the opposite effect, and now I'm starting to not buy the metabolism thing. Seriously all my views got flipped, turned upside down.

Here's a little excerpt,

"Research completed back in 1987 found that a three and a half day fast caused minimal impairments in physical performance measures such as isometric strength, anaerobic capacity or aerobic endurance13. In other words, they found that a three-day fast had no negative effects on how strongly your muscles can contract, your ability to do short-term high intensity exercises, or your ability to exercise at moderate intensity for a long duration."

Such a short period of time won't cause atrophy, but it will prevent gains/growth.

Listen, fasting is great and all, but ya butt buddy is wasting his time lifting weights if this is the route he is going to take.

He'll see the lbs come off but his body composition stay the same or even deteriorate. So then you weigh less, but look the same.

I haven't tried it (because my goal has never been weight loss) but my understanding is that the best method for dropping weight is to have small meals 6 or more times a day, which keeps your metabolism high.

I've always been told that fasting and dieting in the traditional sense will slow your metabolism down and, er, retard weight loss.

I could be wrong, though. I frequently am. Even here, on the internet.

Well, since beer is a food I think he failed. And, the 6 small meals a day simply do not work for me. What works for me is not eating from dinner at night until lunch the next day.

I could never get over the no intake of calories part. If you are drinking more than water or maybe like tea/coffee you are not fasting really. That is one of the reasons I like juice fasts when I do them. I still take in calories (around 1200 or so) and am pretty well balanced diet-wise just less calories and no solids to process. I know people do them for a month or two but I don't think I've ever done it for more than a week. Then again I primarily use juice as a supplement so am not all on that juice kick/fad bandwagon.

According to the research cited, it seems there are a ton of benefits other than weight loss from a full 24 hour fast. Can't wait to try it. Starting next week.

Loki, back in the early 70s I knew a guy in NC that fasted his way back slim again. He was probably in his early 20s and had gotten overweight. His method was not something he read anywhere, he just did it. He would only eat every other day. I don't know if he ate normal when he ate or not though. But, his fasting every other day worked for him.

makes no sense if you are gonna maintain your exercise regiment.

Are you gonna fast before a work out day - you won't have enough energy for a full workout
Are you gonna fast after a work out day - your body needs nutrients to repair the muscle fibers from lifting

I thought every other day was excessive too. I think every 3rd or 4th day would be more reasonable. I'd like to to do it, but can't even consider it while even mildly diabetic. I'm probably already hurting myself now, but really want to drop.

Yeah with getting busy and stressed, happens to me more lately. Just this week I skipped dinner, then in the morning I was too busy to eat anything, had nothing until lunch. I didn't die, wasn't feeling particularly hungry or weak, even played an hour of squash before I did finaly eat lunch.

It's an interesting theory and has some science to back it up. I'm not sure it's for me unless I'm trying to cut an extreme amount of body fat (since I'm relatively happy with where I'm currently at). Also, I think people need to really understand what it is and not just assume it's "don't eat for 24 hours", especially if you plan to train in that fasted period (which does NOT mean you train in a completely fasted STATE).

Its an interesting idea, not something i could ever do though. I have to take my morning and evening meds with 350 cals each, otherwise it not only doesnt work properly but it also makes me sick as hell.

Im just sticking with loads of fruit n veg, and lean meat, limit dairy and grains. It's working just fine for me.

Yeah and can I blend a chocolate cake with ice cream? That's just a beverage so it's probably alright.

Now you're thinking... I like your gist on this. I mean technically it isn't eating, so pretty sure it is alright

It's like chocolate covered celery. Technically it's a vegetable so I'm still dieting.

if you wanna loose weight, try bikram yoga, you burn between 600 to 1200 calories per setting

fasting is not a good idea exspecially if you plan on excersing. all your body is going to do is take resources from non vital parts in order to keep vital parts operating correctly.

weight lose is a gradual thing, not all of a sudden

Just gonna throw out there that what you eat before you fast would most likely still be in your system by the time you were exercising. Unless you did some 36 hour fast or something like that, then you're pushing it.

Sounds fool proof, I'm pretty sure that's how nutrition and digestion works. With enough lettuce and celery even the worst cake can be good for someone since it'll offset

Oh, I probably defiantly don't need it then. I don't really eat crappy food due to how greasy foods make me feel like I am having a heart attack so I am sure I get all I need from just what I eat. I just felt like I needed to have something solid for lunch though sad

No, but if you aren't feeling like you should and go in, he might and then he might recommend you take vitamins.

True, but sometimes it's hard to know when you're feeling off b/c of a vitamin problem. Some vitamin deficiency might not even cause you to feel much of a difference. My doc told me unless you really study what you eat, just pop a centrum or standard multi and you're good to go. He wasn't a fan of those vitamin packs that give you like 20000% of your daily value of EVERYTHING.

Eh, that doesn't really state anything profound. They use words like "can" or "may be". Then go on to state how charring red meat leads to cancer when the same thing can be said about broccoli. I wouldn't put too much thought in to the study unless there is more compelling details such as activity level or overall diet.

I wouldn't put too much thought in to the study unless there is more compelling details such as activity level or overall diet.

I'm betting you don't eat tons of red meat while unfattingurass.

I haven't been, no. But since reading about intermittent fasting I have begun to believe that it is probably not bad for you. Why? Calories in/Calories out.

Intermittent fasting I like because it kind of says you can give yourself a little bit more leeway as far as what you are allowed to eat vs dieting every single day

Eating is pleasurable to me, almost and sometimes even is orgasmic in some cases

I'm going to fast again on Saturday. Today is arms + abs + yoga hardcore day. I think I am going to fast on my non-cardio days actually because I pretty much broke down yesterday after not even that much. Running took it out of me though

Eh, that doesn't really state anything profound. They use words like "can" or "may be". Then go on to state how charring red meat leads to cancer when the same thing can be said about broccoli. news articles about studies are almost guaranteed to be bad. i would never judge a study by what some jackhole at cnn thinks.

I understand that, would be nice to see the actual study with graphs and shit though!
