other than the god awful UI is the fact that I go in, pwn face and clear out a random fort...only to find out later that I needed to wait until AFTER I had gotten the quest before clearing it out. angry

Sucks that these areas don't respawn.

What bugs ME about Skyrim is how boring it gets after a few hours. Everything is pretty much the same aside from a few set pieces here and there. Every fight is essentially the same, the AI is dumber than bleu_errer, and the combat is clunky so doing the same fight over and over again is not very rewarding.

Its fun at first. Then you just lose interest over the 1000th time you've got to throw away iron axes overloading you or the 50th time you try and find a merchant with enough coin to buy your stuff or the 1000th time you kill the same voice actor telling you that you should never have gone there.

Nice game world. Bad game.

What turned me off was how evil it wanted to make you.... Stumbled into the cannibalism quest -- then there was the one for the mace with the stealth -- It just kept getting darker and darker.

Pretty much. Although even the game world is kinda lame in parts, i.e. dungeons. So much for the 150 unique, awesome, interesting dungeons they promised. They have 145 dungeons just as boring as the 10 in oblivion and then a few good ones.

There's a perk in the Speech tree you can get called Investor which allows you to give coin to merchants which makes you a pseudo-partner in their store. You're not really a 'partner' as you don't make any money off them, but it does give them thousands more gold with which to buy the trinkets you pick up and need to sell.

But yeah, I can see where it wouldn't appeal to some, especially those who are used to MMO's. I'm having a blast. It can be repetitive at times but the next game I find that ISN'T repetitive will be the first.

There is also becoming the guild master of the thieves guild. After you become the guild master, there is a vendor across the way from the forge in windhelm that buys everything and starts off with $4k.

I think there's some pretty basic text editing you can do to put more cash on merchants. I'm sure someone's done a mod for it.

I'll add one other thing -- once you hit level 55ish the only way to progress is to multiclass... You essentially have to use skills you have no reason to want to use.

I killed the first dragon and got the first shout. Since then I've killed three other dragons I've run across randomly while traveling. Each time I absorb their souls or whatever, but I still only have the one shout. What am i doing wrong?

Nothing happy During your adventures you'll find dragon walls that teach you words of power. In the Magic/Shouts section you unlock the words by spending dragon souls. You get a number of them during your main quest line with the Greybeards.

The first time you visit Whiterun after killing the dragon, there will be a worldwide shout from the Throat of the World (easy to miss). After you interact with the NPCs in Dragonreach you'll get the quest to visit the Greybeards. When you do that it will unlock the ability to find new shouts in some dungeons. You'll get courier notes from them sometimes when you use a shout in a city that give you specific dungeons to find shouts. Almost all of the shouts after the first one are basically useless until you get Dragonrend though.

You can go to the one greybeard you can interact with and he will give you info and mark your map where a shout can be found. Once you complete that go back to him and he will give you a new quest on where to find another shout.

The Ice Trap one or whatever it's called is pretty sweet. Freeze 'em and then bash the living hell out of them, ez game.

Though I lost my Lydia last night and I can't seem to get her back and it's really pissing me off. I told that ho bag to go home and wait for me there while I talked to the Graybeards. When I got home she wasn't there. WTF? She's got a bunch of dragon bones/scales on her!

Did anyone complete the Forbidden Legends quest as a warrior (non magical) type? I am completely stuck and really don't want to use the console to cheat.

Let me guess - you are stuck trying to get into Saarthal...

As far as I know you have to go through the college of winterhold to get that effing door opened.

Close. I'm actually stuck trying to get into the college of winterhold (so that I can get the quest "Under Saarthal" and get into Saarthal to get the focking amulet fragment)!

Since I'm playing a warrior build on my first play through, I have not put anything into Magicka up to now (just hit level 25 last night) so I have the base 100 magicka. My plan was to skip the College of Winterhold completely with this toon, I figured it would save some replayability when I ran through with a mage build. But I really want the phat lewt that Forbidden Legend gives (amulet that gives +30 to magicka, stamina and health) so I figured I would at least go to the College and get this Under Saarthal quest so taht I can complete Forbidden Legend.

Anyway, the chick on the bridge leading to the College of Winterhold wants me to cast a Flame Atronach in order to 'prove myself' or whatever. She graciously taught me the spell since I did not know it. However, since I have not put anything into magicka up to this point, I cannot cast the focking spell (it requires 150 magicka and is an "apprentice" level spell, I only have 100 magicka, though I have 27 points in Conjuration somehow). So apparently I can either a) gain 5 levels and train up magicka to where I have a base of 150, or b) use (waste) two perks in the Conjuration tree (one on Novice, one on Apprentice) so that I can cast these spells at half magicka. Neither option appeals to me because I don't plan on doing spellcasting with this toon. Do you know of a workaround? If I had to I'd use the console to put the amulet fragment from Saarthal in my inventory but the Wikia page does not appear to list the code for that fragment (though it lists the other two).

The person who is requesting you to cast something to get in might be bugged.

Does she give a 'what if I am dragon born' option? That should allow you to be able to use a shout instead of casting some recockulous spell...

I still only have 100 magicka - and I used a shout to get in.

If she is bugged - there should be a back entrance to get into the college on the north side down by the ocean. I am not sure if using that entrance will still allow you to trigger that quest though.

She may have asked me that but I missed it if she did. I'm now on the step where I HAVE to cast that particular spell or not get in, period. Maybe there's a console command out there somewhere to reset the quest completely?

I don't know - She won't interact with you at all except for you to cast that spell?

I am playing on a PS3 so no console commands for me that I know of... You have a saved game from before the dialogue?

I do but I've done so much crap in the meantime that I wouldn't want to reload from that point.

At this point I can either cast the spell, or Persuade her to let me in. my Speech is only at 39, not sure how high it needs to be for me to convince her but obviously higher than 39. I read in a couple of places online that she will let people in who have a high enough speech skill.

She only made me cast a fireball. Which costs less than 100 mana. If you are playing on PC you can just console command yourself 50 more magicka temporarily.

How do I do that? Do you know the console command? I googled furiously last night but came up with nothing.

i also read that a Fortify Magicka potion might do the trick but I cannot create one that gives +50. Do potion effects stack in this game?

Can't you use some +magicka items to boost yourself to 150?

Shit I never had this problem but I'm not anal about not "multiclassing".
(fu-k if I remember what got me over 150, done with Skyrim since a month or so)

Well, to be honest, it's not like I'm completely warrior focused. I use the Healing spell between fights when I'm out of potions. And I have 27 in Conjuration so I've been doing SOMETHING to level that, I have that Sanguine Rose staff and I use it quite a bit in tough spots so maybe that's leveling it. I also do extensive Enchanting.

I just don't want to waste TWO perks or level my magicka from 100 to 150 just to cast this one stupid spell one time.

player.modav <value> <amount>Edit
Modifies the Actor Value by amount. This command can modify the same values that player.setav does, but acts as a permanent buff or debuff rather than changing the base amount.

¦player.modav <skill> <amount> - Buffs or debuffs a skill by <amount>. The skill name can be found from the skill list, and <amount> equals the value you want to increase/decrease the skill. Example: If your Block skill is 30, "player.modav block 10", adds a +10 buff to your Block, setting its total value to 40 (with the skill level appearing green as if a spell or item is affecting the skill). Using "player.modav block -10" would activate a permanent debuff to your Block and set it to 10 (with the skill level appearing in red). Using this allows you to have the benefits of a high skill level and still gain levels normally, as it counts like a magical buff instead of changing the base skill number.
¦player.modav <attribute> <amount> - Attributes such as health, stamina, magicka, meleedamage, and carryweight can be given buffs or debuffs as well. Unlike player.setav, player.modav changes to secondary attributes (such as carryweight) will stick around after loading saves.

Your google skils suck.

player.modav magicka 50

cast spell

player.modav magicka -50 if you want to set it back to what it was.

Jsut be sure to use modav, not setav. Setav modifies the base value which will potentially create problems down the road.

My buddy says he *thinks* that at some point during the main quest you get a ticket into the College, is that true? If so I'd rather take that route.

I've never heard of a 'ticket' to get into college, sounds like a trap to me!

Console commands, how cheap. Potion of fortify magica + some enchanted gear with fortify magica. Putting a couple points into magicka won't hurt your char at all. Later on you will come accross spells you may actually be interested in casting.
