We have reached the point where his viewing volume is uncomfortably loud to me(and I do not want to damage my hearing from where it currently is by listening at that volume). I am not looking for something the level of normal ear protection because I do want to be able to hear the tv -- but I would like to take it down 10 or 15 decibels. Are there any headphones or somesuch(comfortable for a BIG head) that would merely drop the volume somewhat as opposed to dropping it a ton? I dont particularly want to use something like earplugs (they would draw it down too much anyway also).

Yes getting him a hearing aid would be a better idea but he wont go for that.

get him a nice quality headset.

like from bose or something, I have seen commercials for them on tv and they seem to be marketed towards the senior citizen crowd.

*shrug* its as easy as getting some simple ear plugs to wear, they're not as bad as you seem to think they are. i wear -30decibil ones at night when i sleep but they make them in -10, -15s, etc.

Point is he wont accept anything so I have to do it for myself not for him.

As for earplugs, I would rather not end up with ear infections etc. And those putty things are really annoying. I have tried earplugs for various things in the past and I dont do well with them.

If it's too loud you're too old!

Steal the remote, turn tv down... hide remote? Short of that... Move the eff out of mommy and daddy's house.

Got my grandmother a personal speaker. She lived in an apartment and the neighbors were complaining. You could hear her TV 100 feet outside her house and she refused to wear the hearing aids she had.

Found a set of wireless headphones and tried that, but she wouldn't wear them. Said it wasn't her problem, the neighbors could move if they didn't like it (granny was awesome like that). Finally got a wireless speaker that that was self contained and had it's own volume control on it. Put it right behind her chair she watched TV from, right behind her head. It was tiny, but put out plenty of sound for her to hear, but it didn't blast thru the rest of the house.

She was able to watch TV with it and hear comfortably, and everyone else could hear the sound from the other speakers in comfort as well.

i've been using ear plugs to sleep every night for nearly two decades. never had an ear infection. you can find them made out of cotton, foam, rubber, wax etc...so you can find a style you feel comfortable with.

these do -12 decibel - http://www.earplugstore.com/hehinasoearp.html

or a little stronger these do 18 - http://www.earplugstore.com/quietnrr14.html

these are my favorite kind but would likely be too strong unless your dad is really blasting it...although considering the crazy volume my own dad blasts stuff at these would actually be perfect. so depending on how bad hes blasting the sound you might be underestimating how strong of a noise reduction you need. those are really comfortable though, you completely forget they're there.

edit-
hmm...might be a knockoff of the ones i get now that i look closer. mine say "quite please" and not "quiet time" *shrug*

they look the same though so i'd guess they're just as comfortable, from the reviews maybe not as good as they claim noise reduction wise though.

You can get some of the noise canceling earphones for yourself, can turn the actual noise canceling on and off, depending on how much quieter you need it. Not sure what else to suggest since you can't do earplugs. I am the opposite, wearing earphones for any length of time (yes, properly adjusted, not too tight etc.) gives me a headache.

First off, thanks to Grim for providing the website. Oh and with the earplug things I would assume you need to sterilize them between uses(if I take that route)

Second off, Pfffft to a bunch of the other people. I am 43 years old. He is 66 years old. Your conclusions are unfounded.

depends on what you get. i get the foam type i mentioned in that last post and use them for about a week and toss them for a new pair. no cleaning or anything like that. i suppose if you've got some nasty earwax issues it might be a problem lol.

if you just want to try some walmart usually carrys that flents "quiet please" brand. you could pick a small pack up and give them a try.

I think once the dad tries the headset, he might not want to go back. Or the back of the couch speaker solutions.

It all depends on how it is presented to him:

- With the speaker, I would just set them up and surprise him one day (with a lower setting! no heart attacks geez). He might actually prefer the sound that way and hear things clearly without having a blaring TV yelling at him from half a room away. And the best part is he doesn't have to shove anything in his ears and still hear what else is going on in the room.

-The headset might be a bit more tricky. But if you pick a time when he really wants to watch something and there are "guests" coming over, (younger and louder, the better). Or maybe some of your friends are over and sitting not far talking about whatever...loudly. When he gets annoyed, say sorry you'll tone it down but meanwhile just try this on:
"for now" <---that's the important part.

Anyway make it feel like it was his idea to begin with and you'll be fine.

I am sure that the blaring loud TV isn't ideal for him either, it's just the only way he knows.

Rather than argue or try to "reason", just give him options, (by this, I mean actually implement the options and let him be in charge of which ones he really likes-he might even be surprised at things he didn't know were available).

Then let him see which ones actually do seem better than what he had before. If he gets to pick one, even better, he feels that he is still in charge of something. And you will both be happy.

Put in surround sound and put a turned up speaker right in back of his head just like Ptilk suggested. You both can comfortably enjoy the TV at the same time.

sounds like the old man needs a hearing aid...If his hearing is bad enough to need the tv as loud as you suggest, it's not going to get any better when he gets older...might as well go ahead and get one and then he will be able to have "normal" conversations with people instead of being a dick and making everyone yell at him.

don't stand for the "but he won't go for it" crap...I'm assuming your Mom lives there as well? And he's making you both suffer through that?

the speaker next to a chair sounds like the next best thing...but he still needs a hearing aid obviously.
