Poll: 69% of Americans want to outlaw super PACs

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2012/03/super-pacs-illegal-abc-poll-/1 The strong feelings toward these groups are bipartisan, the poll shows. Seventy percent of Democrats and 55% of Republicans want to outlaw super PACs, as do nearly eight in 10 independents. Mississippi and Alabama voters, who go to the polls today, have been watching ads defining the GOP presidential candidates that have been financed almost totally by super PACs. Bloomberg News reports 91% of the 5,592 campaign ads that aired on TV in these two Southern states in the past month have been paid for by super PACs, according to data from Kantar Media's Campaign Media Analysis Group. Too bad that Super PACs are protected free speech!

When will we learn that interfering in things like this is far worse than just leaving it alone. Just allow people to donate whatever they want to whatever politician they want -- just have it be out in the open who is donating what. Things like super-pacs just increase the number of non-vetted negative ads and make the campaigns all over the place.

You have a few good points here. I like the one I bolded very much. Honestly though I really think that there needs to be a mandate about media coverage and expense with respect to popular media (TV, newsprint, etc.) I would definitely favor legislation, which on the surface of it seems incredibly invasive, but also feels incredibly necessary to me, that forced equal and ACCURATE representation by the media of political candidates. Let all the grass roots and smear ads on billboards stay just that - grass roots crap and no longer the bailiwick of corporate megalomaniacs scratching each others' backs.

Okay here is something that doesn't make sense. You have 70% of Democrats that want to outlaw super PACs. Ergo, money/power concentration is bad. But yet they steadfastly support big government and generally claim that more government (in some fashion) can resolve all woes. ... How come they aren't making the connection that you would automatically diminish the power & influence of super PACs, even the impetus for super PACs coming together, if you just decentralized your government? Why? Why would they be so contrary in this fashion? Either you are forced to think that they aren't so smart or you have to question their true motivations. Now without getting all upset about some tough questions, explain this please.

I think the democrats would prefer fully centrally funded campaigns with no outside donations whatsoever... IE the State would give say 500 million dollars to the republican and the democrat to spend and nobody could spend any of their money on ads for or against any candidate during the campaign season nor could they donate any money to the candidates.

The super PACs were an unintended consequence of legislation limiting campaign contributions. Since the money doesn't go to the candidates campaign then there is absolutely no tracking of the donations either. This is why idiots shouldn't pretend to be righteous while writing legislation against free speech.

Which brings us back to inherent and ostensibly insurmountable problems that even if you could legislate away, you would have a never ending whack-a-mole game of chasing the closure of loop holes. And the loop holes would most likely favor the establishment. Also, a system of centrally funded campaigns you can bet your ass is going to lockout anyone other than the establishment by design. So effectively "the people" are once again left holding the shit end of the stick. To my mind there are only two effective ways to solve this problem. One is smaller less powerful government that is inherently less attractive to monied interests. The other is a constitutional requirement for voter competence testing.
