A substitute teacher in La Mirada was arrested Monday on suspicion of sexually molesting a student at Los Coyotes Middle School, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department officials.
The mother of a female student at Los Coyotes Middle School said her daughter told her a male substitute teacher, identified by authorities as Ted Nishihara, touched her in a sexual manner during class, police said. The mother reported the incident to deputies at Norwalk Sheriff’s station on Thursday, March 8.
Detectives interviewed students and staff at the school Monday before speaking with the suspect, police said. After an interview with Nishihara, detectives arrested him at his home for lewd acts upon a child.
He is being held on $100,000 bail. A court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday, according to jail records.

LAUSD is trying to get state law changed so that it no longer takes 4-7 years to fire a teacher and the teachers unions are against it. I doubt anything will change, the teachers are the most powerful lobby in the state so students safety will just have to take a backseat to teacher protections.

The California Teachers Assn. spent the most, as it does periodically: $6.5 million. Among its many successes, it persuaded lawmakers to pass a last-minute bill restricting school districts' ability to lay off more teachers if future funding cuts occur.
I think they got a pretty good deal, I hope the LAUSD is successful, it is time the tail stopped wagging the dog.

The Los Angeles Unified School District agreed last June to pay about $40,000 to settle its dismissal case against former Miramonte Elementary teacher Mark Berndt, who has since been charged with 23 counts of lewd conduct, including spoon-feeding his semen to children.
The District suspended the former Miramonte Elementary School third-grade teacher last February, and initiated steps to fire him. According to district documents, the LAUSD had outlined three causes for Berndt's immediate dismissal and suspension in February: unprofessional conduct, immoral conduct and evident unfitness for service. Berndt fought the dismissal, taking it to the District's Office of Administrative Hearings.
In March, an attorney with Trygstad, Schwab & Trygstad, the firm representing Berndt, responded to the LAUSD's charges, arguing that the accusations are so “indefinite and uncertain†that she cannot prepare a defense, that Berndt is “fit to teach,†and the “charges fail to state any facts and are conclusive in nature,†according to the documents.
The case ended before going to a formal hearing when Berndt resigned in June. The District agreed to pay Berndt nearly $24,000 in backpay from the date of his suspension, allowing him to retain his lifetime health-benefits. He also received $16,000 to pay his legal fees, according to LAUSD settlement documents obtained in a joint investigation by KPCC and NBC4.

Spent the most at $6.5 Million? Hardly - I don't know what your article is trying to say but the Mormons put in something around $30 Million to get the whole Prop 8 thing fubared...

Court cases can take years and when that is done the minimum two years of dismissal process can proceed. It shouldn't take two years to fire anyone and costing an average $300,000 is outrageous. The local school board and they alone should have the final authority to fire teachers.

Education is used by politicians for political purposes - this is why tenure exists.
otherwise teachers would be hired and fired with each new administration - same reason for professors.
In NYC you have three years to decide if a teacher is bad and they can be fired at will before they get tenure. after that you have to prove they are bad since it didn't show up in those three years.

A teacher was feeding students his sperm but of course that is a witch hunt, he is a teacher so naturally he didn't do anything wrong. This attitude is what is protecting criminal and bad teachers, because it is better that 10 pedophiles be allowed to teach than one innocent teacher be accused. The kids don't come first in our current system and the teachers want to keep it that way, schools would be a nice place to work if it weren't for all the students.

I know, there are no bad teachers, but you would think they would let up on the criminals but for some reason if you say you want to make it easier to get rid of pedophile teachers the unions just don't see the word pedophile.

Did you see the story I linked? The teacher was allowed, by law, to retire before they could complete the process of firing him so they will be unable to contest his pension or disallow his lifetime medical care. I wonder if the teachers union supported or maybe even lobbied for that law or were they against it? They are even against changing the law so this doesn't happen again.
